We're basically on the same page, friend. Get the current house in order -- for both the locals and tourists. Regain that friendly, comfortable, safe appeal for tourists and their families. Stop betting that the "one big new" project is going to change everything, it's not. Penasco truly has a lot more to offer - a great culture, great people and the perfect location to capitalize on all of it -- one of the most unique ecosystems in the world.
Although I haven't lived there for more than a week or so at a time, I've done it often for over 30 years and I find myself wanting to visit less and less these days. It's lost a lot of appeal for me. Graffiti everywhere, run down appearance, potholes that swallow my F-250 truck. In some ways, it's becoming more like Tijuana, which you couldn't drag me to these days. I don't see the same level of local pride that there used to be. People may have not had much, but what they did have they were proud of and took care of, it showed everywhere in the community.
I'm a lot different than your "average" tourist. I don't stay in a fancy beach condo; I don't seclude myself in a resort. We are out among the locals, visiting friends, out fishing, eating at our favorite places, being part of the community whenever possible. That's one of the reasons I feel comfortable making comments like this - I live it, I see it, I'm not some "ugly American" that expects things to be like they are here in the US. I expect them to be
Mexico.
Eh, everything changes. We can only go forward. But, we can apply what we've learned along the way as we make that journey!
