Moving Our Family to RP

We held out as long as we could.

My wife's visa expires in a few weeks and we have not been able to secure her resident visa. After exhausting our options, we are set to move our family to RP. Why RP? Her family is from the Rio Sonora area near Aconchi and I did not want to live THAT far off the grid. If we have to live in Mexico to keep our family together, RP is about as good as it is going to get.

I am a sports writer and need only reliable internet to remain employed. I don't have a lot of faith in the local wi-fi providers and have got a deal on a super-fast satellite internet provider that will more than do the trick. A local RP company tried to tell me that anything beyond 2.5 MBPS was considered "military grade" and subject to being confiscated if discovered. That would not be good.

One would think that a serious improvement to the connectivity of the area would attract a lot of companies to the area. Especially web-based employers who could utilize the availability of a bilingual labor base for a call-center. Resort areas are also very attractive to guys like me. Personally, I am getting a heck of a kick out of the idea of working from my laptop with the blue sea in the background. I know that there are a lot of home-based internet businesses that could provide a nice boost to the local economy.

Our two children will be going to CIMA School and I have heard nothing but positive about the school.

So, my question for all of you... with well over 150,000 readers a month, what can I do to help turn the whole thing around? I've thought of hosting a bachelor-for-a-few-days golf tournament sometime between Christmas and New Year's. I am thinking kegs, beach bonfires (funny, where are the trees?), and cute hostesses to keep the boys interested in bringing the family back, for a week or two, in the spring. Trust me, if I can give these yahoos any good excuse to escape Canada and the US hockey hotbeds of Minnesota, the Great Lakes, and New England for a few days, they will be booking flights the next morning.

We are excited about the move and look forward to being a part of the community. I also look forward to meeting a few of you.

Welcome Stephen.

I am curious about your satellite internet provider.

Feel free to pm me if you have enough posts.

Thanks

Think I'd move to PV and rely on Alaska Air to get back to the great White North. You could surf there too!

... you are not a US citizen then? (Or your wife could get citizenship by marriage)
Have you ever been to Rocky point? Moving a family with two pre school children, the school situation has to be a big factor. Visit alone before making that big step. Since internet is you biz, check out other big US/CAD transplant centers, San Carlos, even Puerto Vallarta. Population Size matters, why is driving to Tucson or Phoenix important if your home is way up north and your wife is Mexican?

All,
I am a natural born citizen of the USA (as are our 2 children) but there has been complications with getting Maria a resident visa. Her dad has had some health issues and we wanted to be closer.

Why RP and not San Carlos? I have a need to get to Southern California, Las Vegas, and Arizona for my work. A building in San Carlos, that is comparable to what we are getting in RP, is almost three times as expensive.

Internet- I don't want to jinx it, but a dealer from Phoenix is going to come down and install the dish for a great lunch and $100. I will be paying $130 a month for the service but that is more than worth it. Have any of you ever heard about this MBPS limitation and "military grade" performance restriction?

Education- I've done my homework in regards to CIMA and am comfortable with the program. At some point our children may desire to go to school in Phoenix but in the meantime, I feel that they are not going to suffer with the education that the school provides teamed up with what they are getting at home.

Area- Not concerned about safety of the area. Where we have elected to live is remote, very safe, and within our means. The 30 minute commute to and from school will not be easy, but is doable. We are going to be fine. If the crap hits the fan, we can simply send Maria to her family while the kids and I come back across the border. If that ever happens, we will all be in a world of hurt.

So, what is the deal with the seafood? When is the shrimp in season and what is available when it is not? Are the local clams good? I've read about the greek food, shrimp cocktails, margaritas, and stuff... and want to thank you guys for doing such a great job with the reviews.

Ok...back to work!

I'm curious about that high speed satellite internet service you mention....the fastest I've seen advertised runs in the 5 meg down/1 meg upload...for about $350 per month (business level service). If you can get a phone line from Telmex at the house, you can get that speed for considerably less. Yeah the outages may be more frequent in Penasco then in the Phoenix area...but not enough to warrant that kind of expense.

Best of Luck Stephen. Hope the internet works for you. My husband has to work sometime when we are down and the only problem he has is the spped for pictures.

WildBlue is upgrading to an even faster system in the fall... we should be somewhere in the 12MBPS range now with an upgrade to 20+ when they get the new birds in the sky. I look forward to seeing the speedtest.net numbers to gauge the improvements.

That still is a lot slower than what we have now...

WildBlue may be fast (for a satellite system...although the upload appears to be slow)...but they charge like the cell companies do....by the Gig......

Those numbers are from my cable modem through SuddenLink. Pretty insane.

WildBlue will cost me $130-$200 month... but we are ok with that.

I've had Wildblue up for about 6 years, running 24/7 off of solar in Penasco. Works well, but one problem is the environment is brutal on the dish even after powder coating it and changing all the hardware out with stainless steel.

There is no fix other than having the dish and all the other outdoor components that support the dish powder coated and definitely exchange all the hardware for the dish, nuts and bolts, with stainless. You will still have some issues over time but if you don't do the powder coat and the stainless the whole setup will be toast in under a year. I have 2 old setups as proof. It is next to impossible to get any wildblue installers to come to Mexico, I ended up doing the install myself and it is not easy and I cringe every time the wind blows hard. But I will say that with our dish and my Meraki setup, over 50 people on a typical month get wifi internet access through the wildblue dish setup. So all in all it works and has worked for close to six years. The downside is only 17 gigs a month in download data so certain times of the year that gets stressed but the new limits with the new system are 25 gigs which is a great improvement.

Estero,
I have a installer out of Phoenix that happens to be a hockey fan AND a lover of Rocky Point seafood... We will pass on the info to him about the powder coating and stainless. He should be able to get that done before he comes down.

If you have had 50 folks on your system, I should be set with just my family on ours. Thanks for the help.

Well... we are here.

I am anyway, Maria and the kids are on their way to the ranch for a few weeks to visit her family.

I knew this place was going to be amazing, but was not prepared for the shock on Maria's face when she opened the front door. That image will remain with me for the rest of my life. She is an amazing mother and wife and deserves the gift that life has given us.

We would like to thank all of you for your help and information, now its time for us to start giving it back.

Stephen

I think we can wait until you are all moved in.... LOL! Seriously, congratulations and we can't wait to meet you all!

I went to the Bodega/Walmart, Super Ley, and another nameless farmacia and still can not find Gold Bond Medicated Powder or a swifter duster type of thingee. Something else that is strange, do they sell Corona Extra by the case, or even a 12 pack here?

There are 3 Corona stores in town. I'm bad about road names but, on the main road as you would leave town going North it's on the right hand side just down from the OK store on a three way intersection.. The other is just past it a bit on the same side of the road. The 3rd one is on Freemont East of town just down a 1/2 mile os so from the firestation. A small road and it's off the highway to the South.

a case with a return was 205.00 pesos. 24 bottles

I don't know roads and always go by landmarks to get around.
