As of January 16, 2014

Benito Juarez (Route 8 from Sonoita) is closed from the second light coming into town at the Santa Fe/Bodega intersection all the way to No Reeleccion where the Baseball Stadium is located.

Samuel Ocana is now under construction. This is the first light coming into Penasco. The westbound lane (toward Sandy Beach) is as of 1/16 stripped of pavement and closed half way to Constitution. The eastbound lane now carries traffic in both directions. Ocana is in VERY bad condition all the way to the RR tracks, past Constitution. Avoid it if you can

Alt. routes:
To Sandy Beach coming from Sonoita go right at the big intersection outside of town, toward Laguna del Mar/Laguna Shores. Cross the RR track and take a left. You will avoid town traffic completely on this route. This takes you to the traffic circle, Pemex and Circle K then on Blvd Costa Diamante to all Sandy Beach destinations from Playa Bonita to The Reef Rv park and Cholla Bay. Samuel Ocana also ends at this circle but... read below.

To Old Port, Las Conchas and Mirador
You can turn either right or left at the traffic light just past the Santa Fe Market and Bodega/Walmart, at the intersection of Benito Juarez and Lopez Portillo where the street is blocked off.

If you turn right you can go about 8 blocks a dirt street, Av. Ninos and Heros, there you can turn left , go about 6 blocks on the dirt road terminating at No Reeleccion, then left to Benito Juarez at the BB stadium. On this route you will cross the paved street Revolucion but due to construction it is blocked at Benito Juarez so do not turn left there. If you turn right on Revolucion you could go the 8 blocks on pavement to the next paved street, Constitution, then left all the way to Benito Juarez. You will pass Super Ley on this route. Either alternative will put you back on Benito Juarez south of the construction zone.

If you turn LEFT where the construction zone on Benito Juarez starts you can go to the first stop sign at Blvd Josefa, turn right an go all the way to Fremont at the entrance to Las Conchas. A right turn here will take you to the Mirador and Old Port. Josefa is a busy street but paved all the way and pretty rough but not as bad as Ocana. If you turn right off Josefa at any of the traffic lights you will go to Benito Juarez south of the construction zone.

If you can follow all that you're agood navigator !!:eek::eek::eek:

The potholes are in generous supply on most of the roads so watch carefully.

Update February 8, 2014

Benito Juarez still closed for construction between the two reported streets above. Still in dirt and working on infrastructure.

Samuel Ocana progressing but still in dirt with some lane blockage. Changes frequently but no pavement yet. The will prolly be doing curbs which will ad to the time.

Calle 13 The sail fish monument is up and landscaped in but the road as of today is still blocked at Benito Juarez. My guess is that they will no resurface Calle 13 from BJ to the new pavement. Calle 13 is also currently closed at the other end. To get to the Pinacate Condos, Del Sol hotel or Max's you have to detour down Calle 12 and go through the large parking lot. You will come out at the Pinacate Condos.

Pot holes on Josefa and Fremont are being repaired.

Yes, it's very bad. I hear the city is going to start fixing the pot holes soon. ( I hope )
Yeah, according to Jerry's recent post of this article (copied below) from Defrente, which basically -- I think -- means that the city is taking (State) matters into their own hands and repairing (filling potholes) the Caborca road themselves, due to the perilous conditions of that road:

* Performs City Council considered in the carretera Peñasco-Caborca * * municipal government uses own resources to safeguard the safety of motorists despite a State rua * * PUERTO PEÑASCO, 7 February 2014. * in an effort by safeguarding the safety of the families penasquenses that use the Caborca-rocky road, a gang of at least 15 workers of the Town Hall began with the work of considered State Rua.
Despite representing the Local State Board of paths of the Government of the responsibility for the maintenance of this important means of communication, the Government headed by Professor Gerardo Figueroa Zazueta decided to do the job to the terrible conditions of the same.
The Coordinator of Zofemat, Benjamin Ortega white, informed because of the danger that represents travel on such road, Thursday began with the work of I considered from the 40 kilometer and it will cover up to the entrance of the city since there are sections really bad.
"Concerned about the safety of the families who use this road, our Mayor turned instructions so we abocáramos to do the work of considered because today rua conditions represent a latent danger for motorists", said.
He pointed out that so far have been used 20 cubic meters of asphalt which has allowed to cover a significant amount of potholes, but there are still other road sections which have to recarpetearse because current conditions jeopardize the families who use this rua.
White-Ortega said that this asphalt is that acquired the town hall for the program of I considered of the streets of the city, however, a part is what is being used in the State road to the impassable of this means of communication.
Tasks of considered the Caborca-rocky road are scheduled be completed in the middle of next week

Be careful, they are filling the holes on the Caborca Highway out of Rocky Point with TAR! Wife got a tar splat with someone coming the other way.

Two guys and a bucket are doing it!

If you are coming to PP, use Constitucion via Sameul Ocana or Josefa from the first stoplight. Samuel Ocana is bad..... Constitucion puts you back on Juarez below the construction. I don't know how to get to the condos.....Maybe Melissa can help but if you are coming to the Mirador, use Josefa or Constitucion......

Coming into the condos take the turn off to Laguna Shores/Coastal Highway like usual. Now I've got to figure out to get to Bodega without going thru tons of construction.

There is a "path" to sams club taking the next street south of the stadium street and where you come out from condos at juarez/stadium

This will be a new test of your off road driving skills !!!

Actually, easiest for a one trip in a vehicle to bite the bullet and go on Ocana to BJ. Road is rough but you won't get stuck :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Where the hay have you been Roberto! I'm at the corner of Cuautemoc and Revolucion, and I'm stuck. I keep waiting for your red truck to come by so that you can dig me out!!!!

Just kidding. Made it to the Bodega and back with no trouble at all. Followed Wildtoucan's directions and went passed Quinta Ventura to Josefa and turned left at the road that runs along side of Bodega, turned right on BJ, and there we were. When we left to go back to the condos, I turned right onto Samuel Ocana, but then made a pretty quick left down a decent street and turned right on Revolucion and took that to Constitucion and came out at No Reeleccion, just where I wanted to be! No shovel necessary!

Roberto, I did that stretch from Kino to Libertad over Christmas. Probably rough in a little car, but 100 kph and not bad at all in something with big wheels. Scenic to the nth degree, besides. I recommend the drive.
