Drowning

From the facebook Puerto Penasco Fans and Community: I am just reporting the sad story...teach your kids and yourself to swim, practice too...
"2 hours ago on Playa Encanto a boy ran up to my son and I on the beach waving his arms for help and spoke no English. My son went to get security and I followed the boy 300 yds down the beach. A family of children all ages were screaming and pointing. A man was floating in the water. I swam out and pulled him in. His name was Erik. He was about 28 yrs old. I did chest compressions and breathing for almost a half hour until the ambulance came. Security and the girlfriend helped. The kids were crying the whole time screaming. We couldn’t save him. He died. They said he was only out there about 3 minutes. My son had gone to get his car to help take him to the hospital it was taking too long. His car got stuck and the high tide started to cover it. I ran and got my Jeep as soon as the ambulance came and then my Jeep with winch got stuck out in the water. We got the Jeep unstuck and the Kia car pulled out thanks to some kind construction workers. Do not take life for granted. It can be gone in a snap. I wish I could have done more. I felt so helpless"

You're a good man Jerry, way to step up!! Too many people these days don't want to get involved for what ever reason. I'm sure your efforts as well as the lady's were appreciated. God Speed to Erick, and condolences to his family.

I saw that post and she did all she could, sad situation. What even sucks more is that there is an AED at the Encanto guard house that could have maybe helped and it sounds like it was not employed or brought on scene. Maybe it hasn't been maintained and would not have worked. Who knows? Our club has been evaluating getting one as a type of just in case insurance policy.

Rule # 1 is never use an AED around a wet person or wet area. Our guards at Playa Encanto are trained on CPR and use of an AED on a yearly class at the Red Cross. The AED is kept up.

Our guard said he was blue/purple when they got him out. He was trying to rescue his kids from the fast approaching tide at the canal deep parts, none of them could swim.

My buddy who is a San Diego lifeguard keeps a razor and a synthetic chamois with the AED on the truck. They will move the person to dry sand or on the backboard and then dry the area quickly before the pads are placed. Often the person is still in their wetsuit and they just cut the chest area open for access.

Do you happen to know what model of AED you guys have there? Do they also have oxygen? A friend at Playa La Jolla didn't think they had an AED there either but also thought it was a good idea.

E mail from LC HOA today: This afternoon a swimming accident occurred in Section 8. A renter drowned as a result of the large waves and angry seas we are experiencing today. This individual was a 78 year old male.
