Wind Turbines

I was just in Puerto Penasco the first week of September and in spite of it being reasonably windy I noticed that neither wind turbine was moving. Does anyone know why? Are they still in operation? Or was it maybe just for maintenance?

The past 8 trips down since Jan of 2020, I've only seen one of them spinning one time.
The power generated from them is supposed to go to the San Carlos /Guaymas area.
I don't think it's a maintenance issue. Even last year there were many days they were not spinning when we were there.
It might be a cost issue.

Noticed the same last trip a couple of weeks ago and it was blowing like a hurricane. Neither of them were spinning and they should have been going like helicopters in that wind.

I was thinking more like demand. Lower demand for electricity in the last 6 months due to Covid if the energy really does go south to SC GUA. We can't store the electricity so it makes sense but that could be completely false. That would be a guess if we were playing a game. Tortuga answer seems reasonable too... Curious minds inquire...

That's true about the wind limiter, when it's really blowing they shut it down.
But even before Covid hit, for the past year those turbines should have been spinning more than they have been vs the year before.

It's down to demand and cost value to find out why they're not spinning and making $$ for the owners.

It doesn’t matter how hard the wind is blowing, they always spin at the same RPM. Otherwise they won’t produce 60 hertz.

They are designed to de-pitch the blades in winds with high energy and at 55 mph, this prevents the blades from capturing wind to turn.

I want to put a wind generator in this winter. Any suggestions? Thank you.
We used to have one on our farm. The best hint I can give is to oversize the wiring and minimize the distance from the turbine to the battery. Systems can have A LOT of resistance loss. Having a good handle on your usage will make sizing the system pretty strait forward.

Are you sure you are on the right thread??
No, because the President says that wind mills produce cancer. I was asking how far the cancer spreads from the wind generator... Trying to figure out how many people in Rocky Point have been exposed to cancer.

Interesting!! How exactly does a wind turbine produce cancer? If that's the case, the whole West side of Maui is probably on their death beds by now!!!
