I never knew it to be closed, just a report from a friend of a friend thing. And, I never tracked down the gringo that "lost" his boat, either. I write it off to lost in translation somewhere.

The navy had a traveler (leased out of RP) sitting around bird island a week ago putting the hammer down on the locals.They nearly sunk in the storm.The Marines took showers at my house and brought us scallops cooked in lime...real good. They were keeping the pangas from fishing at the Island but were going to take Kenny,Joe and me fishing on their boat untill the weather changed.I have the cell number of Alfonso the Biologist from the boat if anyone wants to ask him whats up.
