Started work on Walmart today

Lovin it in RP!
When we go to the States (infrequent at best) we almost always visit Walmart for essentials that we cant get here. However the Walmart chain carries those items witnessed first hand in Hermosillo. So we would be saving ourselves a trip to Walmart in the States in favor of the Walmart in Mexico. Precios bajo - Siempre! Shop local Rock global!

not only are the prices cheaper overall but they have the product in stock all the time, like most I don't use Super ley, other than for tequila, or Coppel, always buy from the local stores as in smaller stores and the only thing I bring from USA is money and clothes, imo if I am going to visit any place may as well buy what I need there unless I know of a particular item I might not find

Another reason that I dislike Walmart... They are not hiring local workers. They brought all the people from somewhere down South because labor was cheaper. Hundreds of poor locals have tried to get work on the project and have been turned away. They don't give a shit about the community and it's all about the bottom line for them. You guys go ahead and shop there. You won't be seeing me. BTW, I hear that it will be Aurrera, not an actual Walmart.

They probably brought in people who have worked on their buildings before. Hard to think people would work cheaper than the meger salaries paid here. Part of those salaries will stay here anyway. I wish they gave the locals a chance. There should be more jobs when they open, but you know they will bring managers from elsewhere in Mexico. Like the Mayan and other chains.

I would guess that some of the permanent employees will be former owners of their own small tiendas and I am sure they will make more working for Wally or Arrora or whoever than they did with their own store IMHO

I hate Walmart but because of warranties I do buy all my auto batteties there. Where ever I am there is a place to exchange.
Other than that verry little is spent in the store

First post was 11/29 by Jim announcing groundbreaking. Drove by yesterday 12/29 and Three of the 4 block walls are up, steel interior suports are in, and about 1/3 of the roof steel structures are in. They were actively pouring inside the walls when I drove by, may be the slab, and pouring the bond beam on top of the block walls.

I'm betting on sooner rather than later.

There is no way around it this store will effect some of the small businesses. As the the normal habit of shopping in your own neighberhood I have to believe this will continue. In general people do not change habits. I for one know I will continue to shop in the same places I do today. Even though there is some bashing of Super Ley I still like the store partly because it employees so many locals. The employee attitude is great and they are always ready to help if you need it. Across the street, I do not go there! Produce I buy over close to La Curva and we will continue buying there. BUY LOCAL AND THE MONEY YOU SPEND STAYS IN RP AND HELPS THE LOCALS.
IF WE WANT TO CONTINUE ENJOYING PP FOR WHAT IT IS WE MUST SUPORT THE LOCAL PEOPLE.

I agree, Bill. I think Walmart is going to have a devastating effect on the smaller "mom & pop" stores in Penasco. What happens to Ace Hardware when Home Depot moves in...gonna be cheaper, easier to find, and for a while, a novelty...just long enough to put the little guys out of business.

Went by the Bodega Aurrera site yesterday (Jan 25) and were amazed at how much was done just from a few days ago. Walls up (and some looked like they might be painted) and there were some workers on the roof. Looked like an April opening date might be a possibility. Of course "boxes" aren't as difficult to build. Hopefully it will make trips to the States less needed. Would prefer to do all our shopping here - hate the long drive, miss Penasco as soon as we hit the road, and would prefer to help the economy here - which from our spending we seem to do already lol
