Shore Fishing in and around Rocky Pointe

Hi Guys. I love to,visit Rocky Pointe and have been coming there for years. I would like to do some shore fishing for any kind of fish. Any tips,on where to go and what to use for bait? I have fished Cholla Bay. And like it but wouldn't mind doc fishing or using lures to surf fish. Any help would be great. Cheers GreggM

early June as high tide approaches cast master or the lazy mans special...shrimp on a hook Corvina...big ones,little ones take a day trip to Santo Tomas and park in front of the condo and walk down the hill to the beach...ask the guard for a list of lots for sale if the give you any problems...they won't I like the high tides do to lack of rays but not sure you actually do any better from wading,shore or kayak....

Kastmasters are definitely the way to go. Around the point is good in cholla. Last couple times down we fished off the new jetti out front of the reef and caught plenty of decent size trigger, bass, and even a couple small groupers (released) we bought squid from the mini market in cholla and put a little strip on the Kastmasters slow wind and bounce over the rocks and had a good day. I'd bring a few Kastmasters we lost quite a bit do to rocks and fish taking us into the rocks.

Shore fishing you really dont have much choice but to use cast metal like mentioned above. Kastmaster's or Crocodiles or any other metal spoon... you can't really bottom fish from shore without getting hung up and you wont get much distance with any other bass lures/ jerkbaits... Jerry's buddy Matt does the hook at the bottom with shrimp on it and a smaller weight 1/4 max about a foot up the line, cast it out there and reel just like metal or jerkbait/swimbait... good results down Jerry's way but personally I like using artificial lures. It's much more fun. You could try flounder fishing if you're confident the area is just sand you could get something down on the bottom and drag it through the sand for Flounder.

Matt did? Yea I actually see people are using it to fish almost every time down now. Last year for Fourth of July we took the boat over there and the concentration of Spanish Mack's off those rocks is insane... Definitely some good fishing over there. Just have to find a way to launch the kayak close enough to fish it...

Here are 2 suggestions on getting to the jetty via kayak:

1. For a low clearance vehicle, go through the Reef RV park like you belong there. Park around the apartment looking building on the West side of the park and launch from there.
2. For a high clearance vehicle, off the main road drive pass the Reef and once you pass the water catchment looking place and the fence ends, take a left. Take the ATV trail and follow the small fence until you see where people pass through the fence. Drive to the beach and there is a beach road that heads back towards The Reef. You could launch at the Reef boundary and paddle to the jetty. A 4x4 preferably but a high clearance 2x2 can work as I do not always need to engage the 4x4. Just get a good run at the ditch that was built that has since been filled with sand. This was accessible as of spring break as I used it to get to the area back there when I float tubed it.

Or..........

Just head towards Competition Hill and make a left to the first rocky hill that has the new zip line tower on top. The fence at it's north base has been cut for a long time now. Just head for the beach, once there you will see an old boat launch where most of the larger rocks were removed. At high tide that spot is perfect for a yak launch. Or as Kelney mentions above you can just take to old beach road back to the Reef's fence and put in there on a sand beach. Anyway you do it you're still trespassing, although no one has ever confronted me there.

Is this enough CLEARANCE? and will I get arrested? .... other than that it sounds like that is what I need to do! Really not trying to get arrested or have to talk my way out of a $150 bribe...

I have never been questioned nor ever knew it was off limits as I have not see any no trespassing signs. I know they have a fence and did a big trench to try to keep people out but that never slowed people down much. There is a lot of ATV's that go back there as well. Go and have fun as I am sure you could outrun anything wanting to ticket you!

Thanks for the tips Kelney. I've always read your posts about float tubing over there... I know it's one of your favorite spots. I guess when Im in town because of my circumstances and a lot of times being alone I just go with the help in Cholla Bay...

I've been distant lately... had some issues with the truck back in late February. Thought I was in the Southern Arizona Desert Racing association race that weekend and hit the woop section outside of Cholla Bay at about 50 and broke my left front spindle... had to leave the truck in Cholla Bay for a whole week and return the next weekend with my Civic and new (used) spindle. Guy's in Cholla Bay fixed it for me so I could drive it home. Didn't fish much at all the weekend we broke it. Had to take the Mexican shuttle service back to Phoenix, that was fun. Mind you, I had purchased a new long travel kit for my truck the day after Christmas and I was still waiting on the new shocks and all of this happened about a week before I got those so I broke the truck right before I was about to upgrade it which is kind of a dumbass move on my part... but hey it was fun till it broke. LOL So needless to say, I didnt get back down during March like I wanted to so I decided to get the truck right and make the first weekend of the Derby my next trip.

Let me know if you're in town this weekend... I'd love to hear some of your fish/Sonora stories.

Sounds good!

But, I'm still run-a-ground on this nasty sand bar here in Yuma. My Yammies are still sick and in death throes after getting poisoned with Shell brand shit ethanol "gasoline" that I put into my tank last November. Had to drain and dump 150 gallons of the crap, it ate up every rubber and plastic part from the tank to the final filters inside the engines, wasted another 40 gallons flushing the tank dry then running fresh fuel through and replacing every filter three times along with replacing all of the fuel hoses from the tank to the engines. I decided that since I'm into it this deep I might as well do a complete seal and gasket change on the lower units and replace the water pump soft parts while I'm at it. I'm dreaming of getting them up and running by the first of next month, maybe see you then? Next time I fill up it will be at my local Pemex station in Mirador.

We have been down several times to do some off-roading, mostly in my old Ford Raptor and TJ Wrangler. Got my new Ford Raptor in January and have her geared up now with beadlock wheels for some serious jumping, had her in the Baja Mode at 110 mph. in the sand and 125 mph. on the pavement and that was not even floored.
