shore fishin los olas 2 this weekend

will be fishin the surf this coming weekend. will be there Friday morning and head back Sunday. i plan on netting some baitfish near the estuary then tossing em out to the sand bars before during and after tides come and go. gonna throw some lures too anywhere from spoons to jigs to some surface poppers. let me know if you have any tips as i haven't caught anything on a lure just on the live or dead baitfish....

hope to have some pics for you guys come monday afternoon...

Hi ckyevan and jay... it sounds like you have a good idea about what's going on, and "before during and after tides come and go" pretty much covers it. I guess you know that Kastmasters are probably the lure of choice, but by no means the only lure that will work. What kind of fish have you been catching with the bait fish?
I'll be looking forward to your post.

You might want to check the fishing regulations. I believe we gringos aren't supposed to use nets. I've hired locals to net bait for me.

i will definately check to see if i should be netting or not i will ask the lady at the Sun y Fun dive shop and she full of good info. only reason i started doing it was because i learned that trick from a local who told me to do it when i was buyin bait at the fish market....

in the past i have caught corvina, the little rock bass cant think of exact name, flounder, trigger fish, 1 puffer fish, and a sand ray. The baitfish tend to do very well. sometimes i will kayak fish and the first fish i catch i will chop up and use as bait when the lures arent doing anything for me which is mostly always lol.....

what size kastmasters should i be throwing? im using a Penn Sargus 4000 with a 7 foot medium - heavy ugly stick rated at 10-20lb line and 1/4-2 ounce of weight i can throw around..

thanks for the help and input everyone...

That should be a fun combination. I use an Abu Garcia with 20 lb. spectra and an ugly stick for some of my in close fishing. It makes the little ones more fun and you can handle a pretty good size fish with it if need be. Nobody else seems to use them, but daredevil type spoons have worked well for me. A little calamari is always good to have also. I usually get a half kilo or a kilo on the malecon.

on a side note our family went on a charter last june with rick hammer and we caught a few pintos and we all had a blast. we spend a week there every june and going to try and get out on hammers boat again...we are in RP four times a year Feb, June, August, and November...thought i would toss in a pic of the puffer we caught from the shore last june as well...

just throwing in a quick update from this weekends trip. picked up some squid from the fish market on saturday and fished high tide on sunday. we caught 6 fish from the shore in about 1 hour... 2 puffers and 4 sand bass. 3 of our sand bass were biggest we have ever caught from the shore ranging in the 1 - 1.5lb range. one of our puffers was the size of a football and was a great fight for a 6 year old on 8 lb test medium action bass rod. will get some pics on here eventually....

Since you are going to be in PP in June, keep a eye on the first annual fishing tournament thread on the top of the fishing page. We're going to have it the first weekend of June. The thread will get going again when it gets a little closer to the date.
