Went on a Fall camping/fishing trip with my good fishing buddy Joe “Triggerman” down to Puerto Lobos on the east side of the Sea of Cortez. We couldn’t have asked for better weather, the light winds made for very comfortable fishing aboard Joe’s 16 foot aluminum Klamath boat “Sunrise”.
Here is the “Sunrise” ready to head out for a full day of fishing.
Here’s Capt. Joe driving his boat out to our first spot where a big Grouper broke me off on 30lb test on my first drop with the iron. Ouch!!
I just wish I had been using 100lb test to have a better chance at getting that brute of a fish to the boat. I never hooked another monster fish during the rest of the trip but at least we had a blast catch a bunch of fish each of the 3 days that we fished.
We ended up catching a total of 17 different species.
Spotted Bay Bass and a Halibut.
Giant Jawfish.
Early morning Leopard Grouper caught off the rocks.
Joe and a nice Spotted Rose Snapper.
Nice Amarillo Snapper.
Early morning picture of the Lobos Lighthouse.
Later in the morning, we met up with Tom Alber of Puerto Lobos Fishing Adventures, and Tom was kind enough to let us buddy boat with him and 5 of his super-nice Bulgarian clients from Arizona.

Here is Tom’s boat underway.
Tom and his clients fishing in the flat calm Sea of Cortez.
Joe gets rewarded with a nice Leopard Grouper that he caught on a 9 inch Big Hammer swim bait, in the Christmas Tree pattern. Thanks again Tom for hooking us up on that nice structure spot.
Nice little Amberjack that ate the Krocodile spoon.
Joe and another Spotted Rose Snapper that ate the Rainbow Trout pattern spoon.
Another tasty Rosie caught on the spoon.
Yummy Orangemouth Corvina on the spoon.
Leopard Grouper and an Amarillo Snapper.
Nice catch of delicious Sea of Cortez critters…triple-sweet!!
Joe and a Goldspotted Sand Bass.
Joe and a Yellowtail on the Salas 6X Jr. in the Scrambled Egg pattern.
Vinnie and a Bonito.
Nice eater Yellowtail that ate the Scrambled Egg iron.
Joe and a Corvina that couldn’t resist the spoon.
Joe and I had another memorable and fun trip down to Lobos and we can’t wait to do it again. Thanks again to Tom Alber’s for letting me and Joe hang out at his house during the evening with his fun and good time clients from Arizona. If you are interested in taking advantage of a very cost-effective fishing trip, you should definitely give Tom a call at 602-526-3343.
Till next tide…HOOK-UP!!
