Samuel (Port Captains Office)

I'm sure many of you that fish out of Rocky Point know of Samuel the slender gentleman that worked for the Port Captains office, he could be seen walking around the port on a daily basis... he also was the person that would put up the RED Flag when the wind was blowing...

Well, the sad news is Samuel passed away earlier this week while on duty as he was walking near Safe Marine and the shrimp boats... Samuel only had a couple of weeks until his retirement....

RIP Samuel you will be missed...

So Sorry to Hear That!!

That's sad. He's been there ever since I got my own boat years ago. Checked me out the very first time, made sure I had everything I was supposed to have, and waved at me every time since.

I'm going to miss him.

People there just seem to "go" very quickly. I remember when Jose passed away (he lived at the public harbor, used to have rabbits and parakeets, always cleaned my fish for me). Got appendicitis and was like dead the next day.

Sam's finally getting some fishing time in.

Oh Man! So sorry to hear that! He helped me once in the mid ninties when I almost sank my 16 foot runabout in the harbor! I went to launch my boat there on the pier on that old ramp that I think is gone now. There were 3 or 4 teenage boys that "insisted" on helping me. I said no two or three times and they were not happy. They were swarming around the boat in the water. I got launched, my friend who was not going out with us parked the Jeep and the trailer and we headed out of the harbor. I immediately began taking on water and was kind'a concerned............ So were my passengers, my friend and her kids, age 4 to 16. I did a couple of quick circles to force some water out and headed back to the ramp. You could see that we were sunk in the back when I got to the ramp. Those rotten kids were laughing at us. Samuel came over and helped pull the boat up on the ramp and tied her up. He then grabbed 2 of the kids by their ears and said "What did you do to this lady's boat" and scolded them for a minute or two. Then, miraculously, the plug appeared in one of the kid's hand. He said it was on the bottom under the ramp....Samuel got even madder at them and grabbed the plug and put in the boat for me!!!! He was all wet. He went and got buckets so I could bail and we were on our way. Samuel got a tip. My friends still refer to that as the three hour tour and sing Gilligan's Island to me! LOL! RIP Samuel.
