Stuart;
Correct, exiting La Pinta, cross the highway and keep going. There are a few intersecting roads but as I recall not too distracting. The last visit the military had set up a manned shelter at one of the intersections. You will need 4WD for the sandy lower sections. Here's a map:

Yes! Love to have a copy of Gillespie's Gold. Thanks for all the info on local railroads. Amazing how many. Railroads and Canals were offered as 'investment' opportunities all over Pa. where I grew up as well. Keep up the good work. I had been making a study of the Sonora Gold mines but lost interest so this gives me some motivation.

A tad pricey for me Jerry. I did get a copy from Elminero and have read it already. A great read. I've also located what I'm pretty sure is the stamping mill at the estuary. I'm going out again soon, before they close the road, with the metal detector this time. Give me a shout when you come to town to shill that desal. We can wear Hawaiian shirts tucked in and go to Capones !!!

I found some copies of a map from 1910 illustrating Lumhohtz's route around mostly Sonora about that time. He wrote a great book "New Trails in Mexico" describing his adventure. Burro back all the way!!. It is very detailed identifying Indian camps, Mt. ranges, streams, arroys, salt flats etc. The map shows where they found water all through the Pinacate and along the coast. The ferrocarriel from the mine to the estuary is marked and there is a name of the RR on the map.

I have a couple of copies of the map, Elminero and would be pleased to send you one if you are still around ??!

Fascinating thread. Hope to find time one of these days to explore some of these areas. Bart told stories of the family going to the hot springs by the mine every New Years Day and pointed the way from his rooftop. On my to do list...
