For those of you who have not discovered the new restaurant and bar, the Mexico Beach Bum, a real treat awaits you. It is located on the Malecon just across the street from Mar Blue. There is a small bar downstairs where you can find Roxanne working almost every day. Upstairs there is a beautiful restaurant and bar with the best views in Rocky Point. Sunsets are amazing! There is a vast variety of food, American and Mexican. There are many items on the menu I have never seen any place else in RP. They have many specialty drinks too! It is a great place to relax and listen to '60's, '70's, & '80's music. They also have big screens for football fans. There will be lots of specials and activities there during Bike Week. Be sure to stop by and check it out. Their huge balcony will allow you to watch all the happenings below.
Well you had a rocky start here as several forum folks comented that they ate there and chips were served, but not ordered, then a charge was on the bill and folks were told "That's the way we do it here". Whats up with that??
That's a beautiful upstairs for sure. Hope all goes well. Can you post a menue?
I am just a customer so can't post a menu but I will mention it to the owner. I think they have a web site and I know they are on FB. Wow, I never had that problem with the chips. I do know they make their chips fresh everyday and they do charge for them.
Sorry, I got the impression from your post that you were involved with the place. Two different folk posted and reported that the chips arrived unrequested but they were charged for them, that's all I know. They can charge if they choose but not if they are not ordered by the customer. Maybe the wait staff just asks 'Do you want chips?" and customers are simply responding OK assuming they are free as in many restaurants in the US.

I don't want to pile on, but this was not the case. They chips were placed on the table without a single word being spoken. As we have not been back, we don't know if they have corrected this.
Well, I was just guessing. Hey GV. You reported an episode there about the chips. Did they ask you if you wanted chips, or just plot them on the table ?

Plop Plop Fizz Fizz On the table. No questions..nada. We haven't been back since. Too many other good places to go with free chips and salsa.
Great location, great views, really nice inside, but a bad first impression.
Well. Luca will be delighted to see your handsome face at Pane Y Vino for sure. Even though you wore that silly costume last visit and rode the horse in the parking lot. He said it was all in good fun !!

No filets for me since that horse went missing.....:deadhorse:
Sorry GV & Roberto, you had a bad experience with the chips. I think you should give them a 2nd chance. Their food is really good and it is a fun place. Myself, I think it is refreshing to have a new place to hang out at on the Malecon.
we went to mexico beach bum twice--the day before and the day of their grand opening celebration. both times the service was excellent, the food was great (ordered a wide variety), the beer was cold and cheap--we really enjoyed it, and also appreciate a new place on the malecon!
we currently charge a nominal price for chips and salsa. Our chips and numerous salsas are made fresh in house and don't come out of a bag. Also we do not reuse leftover chips and salsas from previous guests as is a common practice in Mexico. I would be interested in any feedback about our current policy and will review based on replies. We feel receiving fresh food not touched by previous guests has value.

I belong to to RockyPointTalk.com It has been mentioned on there. Someone stated that they were given the chips & salsa & never given told of the charge till later. I'm a second generation Arizona native. I have never been charged for those things in AZ resturants. I've been going down to RP since the late 60's also. I will give them a heads up on the forum that it is common practice to reuse chips. Thanks for reply. Will be down for the rally & will check you guys out.

Wow, I had no idea that salsa chips were reused! Where did you get this info from? Any restaurant workers on here to substantiate this claim?
Not sure I'm believing any of this. I think it's just their way of justifying the charge. Don't you think the Chip Conspiracy would have come out sooner? Has anyone gotten sick from chips in RP? If it does happen, I'm sure it happens in the US also. Mexico Beach Bum should at least let their customers know ahead of time. Establishments that want repeat customers wouldn't do this in the first place.
That would like having a left over taco on your plate and be re-heated to be served to the next person. I don't think so. Eat where you like and you don't have to worry. La Curva was great a few nights ago. Music was awesome too.

Agreed...... having a hard time believing it also. I think the owner of the Mexico Beach Bum should explain where their 'common practice to reuse chips' claim comes from! I also think its pretty sh**ty that they're trying to throw the other restaurants under the bus. Keep it up MBB, you'll be out of business in no time.
And if I eat all the chips and freshly made salsa and order a second they will double charge me and not reuse the chips i left in the basket. So i take a couple of chips while the waitperson is there and after i eat them say, they are on the house right. Lol, Hope they have a fish fry this coming friday, really enjoy those cause i only eat usda grade meat.
I was at MBB today and got a good explanation of the deal. If a patron goes in and orders a meal, the chips and dip are free. If they go in, sit under a fan and order water with two straws, there is going to be a charge. I started laughing when I heard this, but than saw the serious look on Jose's face.
On a lighter side... MBB wants to set new standards for the consumption of Corona and soon will be offering $10 Peso Coronas with any meal. So eat something and your chips are free and drink all the Corona's you want for $10 pesos each. That my friends is a smoking deal.

Sorry, but this was not the case when we went. I spent $50.00 on food and beverage and was charged for the chips that I never asked for (as were others). Glad to hear the policy has changed.
I have heard that even a bad news article is free advertising. Well, in this case it is working. I'm going there just to see for myself what's true and what's not. Pretty good advertising!!!!!!!!!!

Glad to hear this spot has opened as a new restaurant. We always loved Lapa Lapa, which was the previous establishment. Probably the best ambiance in Rocky Point. Lapa's food was excellent too. Looking forward to trying this new place.
ok--so i want to retract my previous post in complete praise of mexico beach bum--tonite i took my husband there for dinner (my hubby who never wants to go to what he considers gringo establishments)--but he went because i told him one of the owners is from spokane, which is our hometown. and, while the setting was beautiful at sunset, and the food was great again, we really didn't feel "welcomed" (which may be our issue, but the owner did find the time to greet others at their table and engage them in semi-lengthy conversations, but only shook my husband's hand as we entered and i reminded him about our former meeting/discussion about spokane/giving him our card, etc.). but, in their defense, alex our waitress was wonderful, and attentive, and alot of fun. and, she indulged me as i had trouble converting our bill (dollars) into pesos after one too many Indio's.........and they do have free wi-fi, and also were not charging for the chips and salsa, altho i was told "we aren't charging for those today". i guess we went there hoping to find a kindrid spirit in the owner, but that was probably our own misguided attemp to find our own Cheers bar in Penasco--not easy to do.
Menu please or cuanto por las enchiladas Mexican Shredded Beef - Carne de Res Deshebrada -That place sure is nice and are the Dos XX'ks dollar too, Blows Pan Y Vino out of the water!
Hi everyone! I'm Mike Curnow the owner of Mexico Beach Bum. I recently discovered this forum and would like to thank everyone for their input - positive and negative. About the chips... we originally charged for chips and salsa. It was never our intention to charge someone without thier knowledge, but apparently it happened. In response to your input, we no longer charge for chips and I regret ever doing so. I would like to take this opportunity for anyone who was charged to come in and ask for me (Mike). I'll buy you a drink and would enjoy the chance to visit with you in person. Look forward to seeing you!
We have both Monday & Thursday night NFL games, Saturday College Games, and every Sunday NFL Game. Come in to watch your favorite team and enjoy our free chips and salsa with your favorite beverage!
I heard another rumor that Mexico Beach Bum is only open on weekends. That is not true. The only day we closed since we opened was Thanksgiving. We are still open every day. For December, we are opening Monday-Friday at noon and Sat & Sun at 10:30. Hope to see you soon.
I have an Aunt Charlene that we all call Uncle Chuck...not sure how that started. With that in mind, I'll just look the other way in regards to anything close to a Roberto-Charlene, Although, I did see something like that walking down Calle 13.
Wife and I went down to the malecon tonight to buy some shrimp and clams, with plans to go to Ramon's right after. Leaving the fish market, wife says oh let's just eat somewhere here in the old port. Walked over to MBB and decided to try it out. WHAT A MISTAKE. When we walked in something immediately told me maybe not a good idea as the place seemed kind of desolate and it was really chilly in there. Sat down anyway and wasn't feeling all the comfortable but we each ordered a beer. Looked over the menu and decided to order some buffalo wings and a couple of fish dishes. Breaded fish for the wife, garlic fish for me. Waiter fella askes do you want the wings out first which we replied most definitely. No exaggeration, it took 1/2 hour for the wings to arrive and when it did, the waiter says as he places them on the table, " they may look like they are burnt, but they really are not". "But I can take them back if you don't like them". They were pathetic but we just ate them anyway after waiting so long for them. Of course, as we are biting into our first wing, the dinners come out and are served. After my second wing, I figure I better start on the fish and low and behold the garlic fish is barely warm at best. I have to ask for plate to be re-heated. Wonderful. I ask the wife if the breaded fish is cold also and she says no, but I tried it and it wasn't much warmer than mine. She ate it as is. She wouldn't say she didn't like it, but I can always tell when she is less than delighted with a menu choice. The garlic fish wasn't half bad when it arrived the second time heated to the proper serving temperature, but nothing rave about either. We left lamenting the fact that we decided not to head over to Ramon's after all. From our experience, we doubt this place has any chance of being successful in the long haul. I don't see it making it past a year from now,if that long.
Yeah, we keep trying to give the place chance after chance, most recently last Friday night with friends from (way) out of town. Our experience has been yours--empty, very cold, and the service staff inattentive and tucked around the corner, out of sight. I love the new decor and the location. The food's been fine for us. But why in the world they don't want to sell guests more than one round of drinks is lost on me. Same experience four times.

Sorry to report also that the place is FREEZING cold and usually empty. The palapa roof is lovely but carries that ridge line open vent and the wind from the sea was rushing in the other night. Have not eaten there for reasons reported, cold and not a comfortable environment. Too bad, it's a beautiful building. When the weather was warmer the deck outside was nice. Maybe it's a summer restaurant.
They just don't come around and don't offer refills. Weird, since I want them to have my money in exchange for a multicourse libation experience to match the dining one. To be fair, it does seem kinda common except in the restaurants and cantinas that have a Norteamericano owner actually on premises following Sam Malone's old mantra of "No empty drinks on the bar/table." Same holds for food at MBB, though...we want more and would gladly pay, but the staff (different ones, so it's clearly a training problem) hide and hang out together around the corner. Each time there, our group has been the only one in the place, and I've never seen the owner while I've been there. Total shame, because it is the best location and the new owners really did do a terrific job with the interior.
Location and decor notwithstanding, if you don't take my money, guess I'll sidle up to an establishment that will.

Yeah, it's way cold in there. I understand the difficulty with heating a palapa. But especially when there are just one or two groups, just a space heater near the table would help. Well...that and staff that bring toddies...
Being it was New Years Day evening, it was surprising how many places we usually go to, like the Blue Marlin, were closed. Wife didn't want to chance finding Ramon's closed. Wish we took the chance now.
mondone - Hi, I'm Mike Curnow the owner of Mexico Beach Bum. I appreciate your feedback. I was the one who took your food to be re-heated. Again, let me apologize as I did that night for the food not being at the proper temperature. I am going to start heating the plates to help alleviate that problem. Our usual vendor was out of wings and we had to get them from another source. They came with a seasoning on them that made them turn dark as they were cooked. Staffing is always difficult during slow times. When I anticipate business, no one comes and of vice versa. That night we had been slow all day, so I let one person go home and then later we got 4 tables all at once which is always a challenge. I helped with one and our bartender handled the others. There is about 6 weeks out of the year when it is cold here. The building has no heat and a palapa roof. In addition there are many doors and windows which can't be sealed shut. When the sun goes down and the wind blows it is chilly in the restaurant. However, all of these items which cause a problem for 6 weeks are an asset for the remaining 46 weeks of the year. People come here especially for the openness and views of the ocean and sunsets. I am sorry you experienced our restaurant during a cold spell and hope you try us again when it is warmer. I have yet to eat in a restaurant here that is heated - not saying there isn't one.
tmotsinger - Hi I'm Mike Curnow the owner of Mexico Beach Bum. Thanks so much for your feedback. There is no excuse for our wait staff not offering you another round. I am always asking them if there tables have been checked for drinks. I will show them all these comments and review my expectations of them in addition to personally visiting with as many customers as I can. I'm usually off Wed & Thur nights. Thanks again and we will try to keep your glass full!
Mike...Thanks for reading RPT and for responding in the manner you do. We have a sharp eye on this forum and can be
of help. You are one of just a few who come on here to get a feel for things and I think that's a healthy thing for you to
continue to do. I was in your place for a beer shortly after you opened and admit it is a great location.
Good Luck on your future endevours and stay tuned.

True that many restaurants are unheated. Froze our butts off at La Cita a few days ago, but was sweating last night at Bryans. There are several relatively simple things you could do to make it more plesant in your restaurant when it is cold. You otta think about it if you are in it here for the long run. Rig up a canvas removable close- off for the ridge line vent, get some portable propane heaters and yes heating the plates should always be done. You could easily get the temp up 15 or 2o degrees with a little work.
Also you got some bad information about how long it stays cold here.
Appreciate you taking it in the neck from us and responding, Mike. We really do love what you've done with the place...if we can just get your (perfectly pleasant) staff to fill our emptiness. My wife Noel and I will swing back around on a warm afternoon. She'll be the pretty one with the Bohemia Obscura and I'll be the tall goofnut warding off scurvy with limes soaking in ron y Coca Light. -- Tom
Cold is one of many problems with this restaurant. To excuse a presentation because they used a different vendor for WINGS??? My goodness, you are practically telling us this is nothing more than a heat and serve dive. There are way too many restaurants in PP that serve fresh, homemade in house from scratch entrees that I have frequented often over the years and still do to make me never to have a desire for MBB again. To me there is nothing worst than to have to apologize lamely like they did. Management needs to get their act together, or my prediction for this place will come to fruition.
I have the impression that while Mike is well intended he is inexperienced in actually running a restaurant on a day to day basis. May be wrong about that, but some of his responses seem to show a lack of understand about the problems that have been pointed out. Heating plates seem basic to serving food. I even do it at home when I cook, all year long. The wind blows in there with some force and it's just off the sea and cold.

All the reason this place will not make it, just as Lapa Lapa couldn't. Back then my one experience with Lapa wasn't cold, but HOT! Paid a hefty price for a very ordinary meal and lost 3 pounds in sweat by the time I was done. Wrecked didn't last long either, and I didn't get a chance to try it before they were gone.
Give the guy a break. If he is inexperienced he is at least trying to learn. We all stared out inexperienced. Can we try and support pepole who are trying to help RP?

Fine, you support him. He can learn without my hard earned $$$$.
Tip of the day when ordering in Mexico~If having a "Botana" appetizer always order it first with drinks or else they will bring everything at the same time, never fails! I always do so I have a chance to bail.

I have always wanted to open a boat and motorcycle repair business in Penasco, I don't know the first thing about it, but if you guys will bring your Harleys and boats in I will give it a try. That would at least help me learn. No appointment needed.
I hope this place makes it. The owner is responsive. He responds to the problems. I went to Lapa Lapa once and froze.
I too love the atmosphere- never cared for LapaLapa's food, but the building is fantastic. So hopefully it makes it, especially with Spring Break coming up.

You can help him out and eat there every night and freeze your you know what off !! He has gotten useful feedback here. We will see if he takes advantage of it. Charlene is going by there later.
Agree with you fatboyharley, however the owner finally responded after weeks of comments over the MBB, if I recall correctly this is not the first thread about the place and its shortcomings even during the warm days.
IMHO, after 25+ years in customer service even bad criticism is good for improvement, seems like Mike did fixed the problem with charging for chips and salsa, Roberto seems to be right, maybe Mike just needs a little more guidance from an experience bar/restaurant owner.
I personally have never been to MBB mainly due to the reports from others in here.
InkaRoads, it's still worth a drop-in, just for the location. Malecon, ocean, and plaza views--I'm not sure where else has that until you get atop the hill at Lighthouse or Casa del Capitan. They at least used to advertise $1 beers with a meal, but no check I've gotten there for me and large parties of guests I've brought has shown that discount. I'll go again for a beer, just to check out how they're doing and enjoy the view; but not with a big group I'm hosting until I'm sure I won't be embarrassed again.
Working on sealing up the gaps around the windows and doors. Heaters on order. The $1.00 beer special is for Corona with a meal and you have to say you saw it here.
i dont post on here or do i care but i had a horrible experience at this restaurant and it shouldnt have happened. The service was really bad and slow, cold, unfriendly staff and the place was dead. Now I know why. Im not one to complain but I had to vent as there are many more places to go than this place.

Dan Juan - if you would be so kind as to tell me what date and approximate time you were in, it would help me rectify the problem. I was gone over the weekend. Also, if you will stop in and ask for me, Mike, I will make it right by you.

Glad you are trying to keep on top of things. That's the only way you will be able to fix stuff. I have the impression that the current wait staff and bartender are family members, is that the case?
My husband and I frequent Rocky Point, we always have a good time and have gone to our favorite place, ever since we discovered on our first trip. Since then our favorite place has changed hands 3 times. We have gone to all 3, La Palapa, Wreck at the port, and now Mexico Beach Bum, by far we have enjoyed the meals and service Mexico Beach Bum has the most. So we feel that the reason for this is that the current ownership is actually not originally from Rocky Point, Mike the owner is very accommodating, polite and has an extreme attitude when it comes to dealing with some of the more frequent and "picky" locals who also frequent both upstairs and downstairs. There seems to be a lot of negative remarks on this thread which as far as we are concerned with respect to our actual experiences seem to be rather unfounded. The food and drinks are reasonably priced, well served and not at all of spartan or inferior quality. The bar staff is knowledgable in both English and Spanish and very friendly. The atmosphere, the view, the service and food and drink are exceptional when contrasted to other similar locations. We strongly recommend it the next time anyone visits Rocky Point. Of course there are always problems dealing with the language and cultural differences, drunk tourists and a host of other unexpected situations but Beach Bums ability to rock with any wave distinguish them from many others. It is unfortunate that many of the postings on this thread are negative and I am sure the good compliments are far out way the negative ones, every time we have been there, we have never heard anything bad from the patrons but only good compliments.
I have no family members working at the restaurant - they are all in Montana. However, I have gotten close to my staff and there is a family atmosphere among us.

Nice to have that family atmosphere. But frequently family run places do not have the level of supervision and responsiveness needed for efficiency. Dad or mom want to be nice to the kids and are often reluctant to ask for something that might make the kids work harder. These things may be critical to the business. My observations on several evening visits are that the 'kids' who were there stay at the last table in the rear and are on the computer and or tending an infant. Nice but maybe not the best scenerio for business. The young gent at the bar is very plesant but sometimes preoccupied at the rear table. A good bartender is responsive and proactive. A customer should not have to wait to catch his eye at a distant table to order another drink, just for example. Same for wait staff. Yes it's boring standing there waiting when things are slow, but that's part of the job. It is very difficult to keep the staff energy level and responsiveness up when things are very slow. It is a good policy to not have employees congregate and socialize within sight of customers. Most customers resent it when service is a little slow. I admit I have not tried the food because it has been very uncomfortable due to the low temp.
I truely wish you well but I am not sure where ATZA ate. Her experience is very markedly different from others. If it was at your place everyone was 'on' then.
No,neither my husband nor I are family members of the owner or partners. I believe it is only owned my Mike, I know not if he has a partner since we have never asked...not the kind of polite thing to ask people. It is like asking someone how much do they make and I am sure no one at least not my self would be comfortable answering to such question. We just liked the place, if you do not then too bad. I find it interesting how people do not like a place and yet they keep going there and complaining about it. :)

I don't think anyone kept going there. I think it's actually pretty generous and open minded to go back to a place a 2nd time to give it another shot after the first time was a bad experience. Three times and you're a fool.

I find it interesting that someone makes their first post on this board in defense of a place that clearly can't bring it's reputation back. Most of those who have expressed criticism have made hundreds if not thousands of posts and yet those who support this establishment are usually first time posters. The facts are what they are.
OK call me a fool !!! I like the building and when the weather was good enjoyed the deck outside. Since bahishing myself from Max's after being assaulted there I'm casting about for a new hangout. I'm more than willing to give the guy a shot at improving but not willing to be uncomfortable. He got some good info from customers here to improve things, you could call them complaints but he should be grateful to hear suggestions how to improve business. I don't have the impression that anyone wishes him ill will.

OK, so I went back to Mexico Beach Bum to talk to Mike and tell him what happened....and its closed? I only made a comment of how bad the service was which is in line with most posters on here with a history of posting then the ones with just a couple of posts defending that means yes, the owner has multiple accounts or family helping him here. How about taking the advice of others on here and worry about your reputation through the restaurant instead of online. It was cold and you said heaters were on the way. Did they get stolen? You have to wonder why its so dead in there, regular patrons cant be wrong!
I understand that it has been sold. It could be closed during the transition.
Hope the new owners read the Forum and make some of the suggested changes in order to make it a 'favorite spot' to go when in Penasco. Wish them all the best.
"Sold" seems like a generous way to say it bombed and foreclosed. I would love to know what restaurant "experience" this owner had previously. Didn't do one thing right from day one with the charging for chips. What a brillant business decision that is in Penasco. Just got worse from there. This location needs a lot of work, experience, and a good gimmick to ever be successful. Damn, it didn't even last long enough for me to get back down there for the guy to buy me a cerveza for my horrible experience on my last visit.
Exceptionally and consistently poor service. I brought parties of employees, clients, and family there and would have gladly shelled out for more food and drink than they sold us...if only they'd let me. Then they would have all come back on their own, and those they brought back with them would have. Nope.
I know I'm a relative newtimer at least as a part-time resident, but so far my standards are Wrecked and Capone's for service and overall first-rate product. El Conchal on Benito Juarez and that BYOB taco place on Sinaloa north of Fremont for local delicioso-ness. El Barco on Estero Marua for authentic coolness. Max's is good on quality of service and overall product. Bryan's out east and JJ's out west both disappointing on service quality (as was Mexico Beach Bum, as documented). But you just can't stay away from the setting and history at JJ's anyway. Rejoinders, anyone?
Agreed...... having a hard time believing it also. I think the owner of the Mexico Beach Bum should explain where their 'common practice to reuse chips' claim comes from! I also think its pretty sh**ty that they're trying to throw the other restaurants under the bus. Keep it up MBB, you'll be out of business in no time.[/QUOTE]
After the original bad reviews I never wanted to even try this place. Too many other "sure things" in town to waste money and time on an "iffy" place. My red flags:
1. The charging for the chip controversy - bad, bad way to start off with people, then have to apologize and try again - leaves people with a bad feeling.
2. The comment "Mike" made in response to someone's complaint about slow service: "That night we hadbeen slow all day, so I let one person go home and then later we got 4 tablesall at once which is always a challenge." Really? 4 tables at once is always a challenge? A good waiter/waitress can manage more than 4 tables at once. Aside from waiter/waitress skills, I don't want to hear excuses for the problem, just fix it.
3. The second owner "placid montana" said, when asked about his employees: "However,I have gotten close to my staff and there is a family atmosphere among us." Nobody is saying you have to mistreat your employees, but creating a "family atmosphere" leaves you open to being taken advantage of when you're not there to keep an eye on the place. When the cat's away . . . "
