July 4th - Bird Island

Just curious if you guys are planning a trip to Bird Island on the 4th. My husband and I will be down there for a week and are planning on a Bird Island trip - our first. I was going to reserve a couple of spots through one of the charter companies, but figured I check here first so that the money could go for a donation instead. Anything being planned?

Also, what's the water temp like at Bird Island? Any need for a shortie while snorkeling?

Nothing planned for Bird Island on the 4th... the water doesn't seem to be warming up so fast this year, so if you have a shortie it wouldn't hurt to wear it, you can always take it off if it gets too warm but you can't put it on if you didn't bring it...

I don't own a shortie and I'm skorkeling anyway, LOL. It wasn't quite warm enough three weeks ago for me to snorkel, although I did get in up to my neck briefly. Hopefully it's warmed up just enough since then that I can go all the way in!!!

Off the shore or at Bird Island?

Thanks, beachgirl. I just hate to be cold in the water. Never been to Bird Island and don't want to get stuck being cold out there.

If you're planning on diving you'll definately want to wear a shortie staying underwater for up to an hour or so your body will get chilled much more than if you were just snorkeling on the surface...

I was down the weekend of the 11th....Sat. the water was comfortable after you got in a ways(but not warm)...on Sunday, the wind had really picked up, and it was definitley too cold to swim....this was off the PDO area.
