I recently purchased a house in Chandler AZ....

I gave up my house to the ex wife in Los Barrilles ( 50 Miles North of San Jose ) I used to spend 3-4 Months a year there..

I miss Mexico way more that I thought I would. My goal is to have a boat in Rocky point over the next couple of years. I have never been there but heard good things about the town and fishing.

Can anyone help me with a good fishing guide. I had my own 25 foot panga in Los Barriles. Did all my own fishing. Love the in shore live bait finshing but also love to pull iron for the big yellows. Any Marlin or Dodo's within range...

I also need a place to stay. We like a little night life and love to have the fresh fish cooked for us... We have 2 couples.

Any advice on the drive down would also be helpfull.

Thanks in advance

Drive down is a short 3.5 hours from Phoenix metro, coming from Chandler I'd take the Maricopa 238 way to Gila Bend instead of heading out the 10 West. Speed limit is mostly 65 the whole way down with a few exceptions. Always go the posted speed through Gila Bend (35), through AJO (65 down to 55 down to 45 down to 35 down to 25) and WHY (65 down to 55 down to 45) as these are HIGH ticket areas with the Pinal County Sheriff. They even sometimes pull out and ride the hell out of your bumper trying to intimidate you into going faster but just keep steady and you're good. Depending on day and time of arrival at the border there might possibly be a small wait to enter Mexico as ICE is asking a few questions before leaving the country, a yes or no answer will suffice for these questions. Get the green light in Mexico and proceed on, get the red light and the Mexican aduana will want to ask a few quick questions and just briefly look at cargo, then you'll be on your way. Up the hill and around the bend there is a Pemex Circle K for some gas a few ice cold ROADIES if you know what I mean. Always go the posted Kilometer per hour rate in Sonoyta, which is 40k per hour because if you dont it just gives them an excuse to pull you over and try to get a bribe out of you. Go posted 40k and you wont have one problem. When you finally get past the buen viaje sign you are now on the open road and this is where you can open it up. Dont worry about the posted speed on the highway between Sonoyta and Rocky Point, it is not patrolled and I'd say the average cruising speed is 70 to 75mph but do more if you please, most times I do 80 cruise. It's a pretty straight open shot road and passing is fairly easy just remember not everyone uses daytime running lights in Mexico so seeing oncoming traffic can sometimes be hard just be aware, you'll be fine! As you start to get into town I'd check down on the speed and start using caution as the Mexicans drive with reckless abandonment. Be aware and look diligently for stop signs and even when having the right away (green light or stop sign) proceed with caution because cars come from every angle and obeying the law is more of a guideline or suggestion. As you start to get into town the ROADIES should be put away, driving around with an open container is not recommended. Thats about it for driving tips, FISH ON! and TIGHT LINES! For fishing a lot of the guys on this forum with refer you to Mark and he can set you up with Aldolfo Perez on the About Time. Or there are other decent boats staged as you start the right hand bender heading towards the fish market on your right out in front of DEL MAR CHARTERS. Del Mar Charters has a great 40 ft catamaran for sailing if you just want to take the wife/gf/family out for a relaxing sunset with the nicest guy in town OSCAR PRESIADO. Have fun and enjoy Rocky Point.

Ahhh Los Barrilles...paradise in Baja. Should have given her the place in Chandler and kept the one in Los Barrilles. Fishing in Penasco is mainly bottom fishing not much topwater to speak of. Won't be seeing many of these Los Barrilles Dodo's in Penasco DSCN0030.jpg

Anybody that's used to fishing Los Barrilles will be disappointed fishing Rocky Point. That, or you completely need to realign your fishing expectations.

Two words= bottom fishing. Get used to dropping live baits or cranking jigs. You will catch nice fish, but it's not like being on the troll with a spread of cedar plugs, Pakulas, and skirted ballyhoo behind ya. I've trolled the waters quite a bit and you can scratch up some peanut dorado, skippies and the rare occasional sailfish, but plan on covering LOTS of water with very little action. Plus, because the water is so shallow, it heats up. Way up. Well into the 90's from late July until mid-October. It's pretty dead out there, even if you can stand the heat.

Consider going to San Carlos (Guaymas) for dorado, tuna, and billfish action.

Thanks for the comments.... Fishermen are the same all over the world. Great people that always love to help. A little disapointed with the lake of Dodo Bill fish...But I love live bait fishing for big grouper/snapper... Spent a ton of time yoyoing the bait balls just off shore in LB. It's really fun when you hook a Marlin on a Butterfly at 300 feet....

Any imput on what resort to stay at that is fairly close to the fishing docs. I will look up Mark and see if I can book a couple of days. Anyone have a boat.. I will pay for gas food and beer. I love jumping in the private boats. Always good times.

Thanks agian, Can't wait for a couple of long over due days on the Sea of Cortez

One thing not said about the speed limit! When returning to USA just before Sonoita you are running fast. WHEN YOU GET TO THE TOP OF THE HILL AS YOU ENTER TOWN THERE IS A 40 KWH SIGN. BE AT 40 AS THERE MAY BE A SPEED TRAP THAT WILL GET YOU AS YOU CREST THE HILL.

I agree with that - Los Barrilles is much more a great fishing town than RP. but - RP has it's good points too: close to the Valley, beautiful beaches, fat shrimp, and some really great people who you can have some memorable fun with. We love fishing out of Puerto Los Cabos marina, and have done the trip to Los Barrilles too - both are different fishing places than RP. the tips given here are good ones, and Mark is the perfect person to help get you going, as well as his wife Barb - super kind folks. you didn;'t mention what type of place you'd be looking for as to accomodations - there are a variety of choices, from RV parks (my personal favorite), to high-rise condos, single-story condos and homes on the beach, to affordable motels in town. others can help with the night life - we tend to turn in early and get up early.
enjoy.

Fished one day wind blew us out the next....Lots of small fish... Good action but nothing of any size... Anyone ever gotten sick.... All three of us got food poising somewhere... Home now and sharing stints on the shitter... Hope to get back next month. Not LB but a nice town. Way bigger than I thought it would be. I bet the place gets crazy on the weekends. We saw a chain of cars headed down on our way out. Maybe fishing will be better next trip if the winds will die a bit...

DSC02407.jpg My buddy caught this guy...I already posted it...a week ago...the guards netted some big pompanos last night.Think I will see if anything is bitting next high tide

I just recently joined and am super excited to be able to ask questions here and discuss future fishing trip plans and such... So, I'll start right off, with the following three questions/request:

1) Is anyone going fishing next week? My wife and I will be in town either the 4th through the 7th, the 7th through the 10th, or perhaps the entire week, if money allows :)

2) Can anyone point me out to a website that shows fishing forecast, not just temp and wind forecasts?

3) Would anyone kindly share any info regarding rental of a room/condo (preferrably located near or by the beach) is greatly appreciated.

My wife and I come about once or twice a year, and on our last trip we went fishing and loved the taste of a fresh catch. We were lucky enough to meet Tony and his wife (the owners of Rey Del Mar Pirate Ship) by their restaurant at the marina; and she offered to prepare our catch. She made it the most delicious piece of fish we've ever had, along with some of her traditional helpings; and since that day we swore we would come back every year, no matter what.
On this and hopefully future trips, we would like to be able to cook our catch ourselves, and thus would like to rent a small room/condo with amenities (kitchen, small fridge, etc).

So the plan is to do either a full- or a half- day fishing trip, and we are looking to either join a private charter or simply make a group to help alleviate expenses so that there's more money for cervezas or "cuba libres"!!
get it? No? I can explain later...

Back to the topic... if you or anyone you know, would like to share a fishing trip or allow my wife and I to share in the expenses of your private fishing trip; please email to me at [email protected]

Much appreciated, thanks!!
