Five minutes left to go after 10 days of driving and I get stopped

I was within 5 minutes of the Cancun airport when the overly friendly police officer pulled me over. I had just driven 1600 miles without an incident all over the Yucatan peninsula. The speed limits fluctuated from 70km per hour to 40km per hour on the road I was on and I very well may have sped through a slower zone. The officer said I went 70 in a 40 but in reality I was just keeping up with traffic. The nice policeman took my drivers license and said it was his until I paid my fine and I had to go downtown to pay. My flight was just an hour an a half out so I asked if I could pay right away here. I was told the fine was $200 which is a joke. I used a great negotiating tactic ( not on purpose, just by luck) when I opened my wallet and only had $80 in it. The officer looked disgusted, grabbed the money, shook my hand and let me go
I think I was the victim of having a rental car sticker on my car because the taxis, busses and locals all flew down the street most of the time. Anyways, just another minor problem in paradise.

We used to stay at a place called MayaTulum in tulum....lucky you to touring the whole damn area!

J: I saw the MayaTulum and passed it several times on the beach road. We spent a few nights in Tulum at Ana Y Jose's Charming Hotel.
I swam in about 10 cenotes and toured every archaeological site I could get close to. The Yucatan is an incredible place and truly opened my eyes to Mexico's diversity.

$80 us dollars is still a rip off for speeding ticket in mexico. It is closer to 200 pesos less than $18 if you were to follow him to "comandancia" then there you may pay right away or if the person that in charge of processing the ticket you would have to wait and that may take all day long. It is clear that cop signaled you out because you are a tourist and can use scare tactics for you to pay the bribe. It is thievery and very sad fact in mexico.

I've stayed at Anna and Jose's too..except for the Mosquitos biting our feet in the restaurant .it is the kind of place that travelers have to compare with the tourist traps built in Penasco....Penasco loses

J: we got bit up pretty badly from skeeters and no see ums. I unfortunately have great tasting blood and the biters flock to me. I ended up using a lot of Deet. I wish Penasco had some small cool places to stay like Tulum does, you are right.
