I was within 5 minutes of the Cancun airport when the overly friendly police officer pulled me over. I had just driven 1600 miles without an incident all over the Yucatan peninsula. The speed limits fluctuated from 70km per hour to 40km per hour on the road I was on and I very well may have sped through a slower zone. The officer said I went 70 in a 40 but in reality I was just keeping up with traffic. The nice policeman took my drivers license and said it was his until I paid my fine and I had to go downtown to pay. My flight was just an hour an a half out so I asked if I could pay right away here. I was told the fine was $200 which is a joke. I used a great negotiating tactic ( not on purpose, just by luck) when I opened my wallet and only had $80 in it. The officer looked disgusted, grabbed the money, shook my hand and let me go
I think I was the victim of having a rental car sticker on my car because the taxis, busses and locals all flew down the street most of the time. Anyways, just another minor problem in paradise.
