Fishing Friday the 23rd

Went fishing with Mike Berry and Mat on Mkes boat, left marina 7:00 A.M. made bait a couple of miles out, went to one of my favorite reefs fished hard with no results, after a couple of hours had gone by we decided to go out a little farther south, upon arrival noticed plenty of activity on the scope, Mat was fishing live bonefish Mike a scampi with bonefish on it and me with a plain scampi, after a couple of drifts Mat hokked up with a nice 45 lb gulf, we then contd drifting and once again Mat hooked up with a 28lb yellowtail, after that I hoked up with a yellowtail but my knot came loose thats what happens when you rush to cahnge rigs anyway tough fishing I did catch a small pinta on one of my jigs, great day on the water a little cold on the way back, took fish to Cappones where they fed us till we almost popped, blown out of the water on Sat:-D

Hey, but at least you got out! Palomar, Art, palomar. The knot that never gives up! It's the one knot I can tie in my sleep. Everybody should have one knot that they can tie without even thinking about it and know that it will be right.

Actually, I seldom try to tie any knots on the boat. All my rigs are made in advance; I use a heavy snap swivel on my main line. That way, I can change rigs quickly as conditions dictate. I do, however, cut and re-tie the snap swivel every trip before we begin fishing. I hate tackle failure. Makes me crazy to lose a nice fish because I didn't tie a good knot or didn't take the time to make sure my gear was right. I do all I can to make sure everything is ready in advance. Even then, I've had grouper destroy stuff. Just nothing you can do about that.

A palomar knort is about as close to a 100% knot as you can get. I tie them every place possible. 2nd choice is a double clinch knot which is in the 95% + range. I've never had a clinch knot break or come untied on me but palomar is the best. A heavy snap swivel (tied with a palomar knot) makes it easy to change rigging quickly. The more time your line stays in the wqater, the more apt you are to catch fish. Usually a scrape or a flaw in the line will go first. I occasionally strip off a few feet of line and throw it away (in my trash bag) to prevent this. Stuart is right. Sometimes a big fish will walk through anything you have. That's part of what makes it fun.
