The wind sucks, it's easier for me mostly surf fishing that stuff if I can find a good spot. I think maybe trying it in October like JJs did would be a blast.

There are plenty of people down there to manage the scales, or hey even a phone call to get someone in to weigh some fish when they come in.

Yea I would LOVE IT if there was a "derby" or "tourney" in October. I just think over the last decade or so the wind pattern has changed in which the April winds are now lasting much longer and into May. Those are the spring Santa Ana winds that come across from west to east with the jet stream. I watched something on PBS I believe it was about how the jet stream has become more erratic over the last 20 years and the peaks between oscillations is growing so the jet stream has effectively widened it's wave pattern.

I think moving the derby to May or June could open up the possibility for more "acceptable water condition" days. Or like I said, opening it up to any day in a given period so that you give people a chance to decide when they can get down and get their boat out on the water.

Essentially, we have to start thinking outside the box to continue to establish and grow the membership and participation of the Cholla Bay Sportsmens Club and outside participation. If it's continually windy and people are wasting money to come down I think that could kill participation and interest levels.

Just thoughts on the matter. Nothing is right or wrong when you're brainstorming.

There were huge schools of pompano in the area back in the 60s and 70s for sure. The dolphin and porpoise pods, big mackerel would feed on them creating massive boils.
We caught pompano, leather backs and Corvina at the estuary back then when the sardine schools were massive. There were sharks cruising in there also.

Sometimes the Dolphin pods would coral the pompano and leather back schools into shallow water just off shore, 100 yards or so. It was a common occurrence back then and was an amazing thing to the witness. On the dead calm days you could hear the boils a half mile off shore. We would chase the boils in our 12' tin 6hp boat and speed troll with the red eye bucktail jigs on hand lines to catch the mackerel that were feeding on the pompano, sardines and other bait fish. It was so easy to fill the boat with fish back then.

The last time a remember seeing pompano there was in the mid 80s?
But....I did see some at estuary last September, the same trip I caught some rooster fish. I have proof of that on video.

Hey Joe................

June has always been windy on the water and in the desert. As the desert heats up the cold wet heavy air off of the Pacific Ocean streams over the mountains and through the canyons to the warm light dry air out in the desert and expands creating WIND.

The so-called "Santa Ana" winds are a thing of the late summer and fall, hot and dry, not anything like our desert springtime non-stop cool breezes.

Long story short, the only other bites I had that day were Leatherbacks and I was too pissed and stubborn to not bring home fish from my day trip that I brought home two big Leatherbacks and went straight to my friends house upon returning to Phx at about 7pm at night we fileted and cooked them up and honestly, I couldn't really tell. Tasted like fish to me, lol...

I wish I could find this thread on here but the best part is I posted a picture of the Leatherbacks on ICE!!! LOLOLOL

Hahaha, I'm still waiting for a surf bite like what you described, I've been beating myself up on every rock between pelican and pinto, some even have names! The Jetti as well, I've had good juvi groupers there but never surpassed 1-2lb so back into the water they go.

A cooler of Leatherbacks bro I'd tear that up, maybe I got lucky on the few I ate but I barely seasoned them pan seared it And they had a good butter non fishy taste.

As far as my Jet Ski experience, it has only been down one time and I took note of your headings you provided, I went about 8 miles trying several spots, decent rock Bass mostly of course I'm still learning to read the sonar and whatnot. But had to turn around after a few hours of watching the thunderstorm in Cholla. Rough ride in but the ski handled really well. Now I gotta lose the ski, got my first kid on the way and it's just not ideal for a pregnant lady or a new born to ride on .

I'll be pounding the shoreline as much as possible looking for that elusive monster. Aside from that giant Corvina/white seabass you caught off pelican, is it possible to catch white seabass from shore?

June would be fun, I think we would miss out on a species or two as it warms up. Maybe not though. There would be some logistics to work out, as far as having a general time frame, have to convince some.of the full timers down there to stay at the scales. I can only run scales on a few days off here and there.

I do believe the wind pattern does change, I've noticed it inland as well. Definitely not a bad idea to consider recalibrating the derby!

Leather Backs are huge Sea Turtles that lived when T-Rex was cruzin da hood.

They live in the Sea of Cortez. Just found a juvenile on the beach dead two months ago. It was just under four feet long. They can reach almost twelve feet. They can live in the cold waters where most of the other species would just die.
