Attention honest and well meaning people planning to call Penasco home:
This person may be mean spirited regarding Penasco, and does not reside anywhere nearby. It is doing everything it can to bring us down. We are not sure how this will help Disemboque. There are more credible posts about Penasco on this forum if you look hard.
Antigua's tourism minister, John Maginley, told the Herald that Carnival informed him of their decision via e-mail:
There was no discussion, none,'' Maginely said. ``We're supposed to be partners in this thing, and all we got was an e-mail sent to the agent in Antigua that Carnival is pulling its boat.
This will cost Antigua, which is dependent on tourism, more than $40 million annually.
This should serve as a wake up call for all ports of call which are dependent on cruise lines. Carnival holds all of the cards in situations like this. The notion that a sovereign country like Antigua is an equal "partner" to an 800 pound gorilla like Carnival is fanciful. If a cruise line can make a better deal with an island next door, which charges a lower head tax, has fewer environmental restrictions, or is willing to foot the bill for a larger dock, then its "see ya later" as far as the cruise line goes.
The cruise industry likes to promote the image that it is a responsible "partner" with the ports and their local business. Today the cruise line trade organization CLIA posted a link on Twitter @CruiseFacts to a video promoting the cruise industry in Portland Maine. CLIA suggests that its cruise line members are interested in developing and sustaining long term relationships with places like Portland and the "mom & pop" stores in its port.
But Carnival's quick pull out of Antigua should be a warning to Portland and other small ports which bet their economic future on the cruise industry.
The boom and bust cycle will bring many new cutthroat operations in which compete with existing companies With shady employees like my new Darkside tour guide Perro....
Among the more notable finds are an aluminum-bodied 1937 seven-passenger Lincoln limo by Willoughby, believed to be one of five remaining of the 60 that were produced, and a 1937 Cord Model 812 Supercharged Beverly sedan.

You can now fly from Reno to PV for a bit more than the price of a shuttle from Phoenix to RP.The idea that cruises will not leave from the Mexican Riviera in the near future is just wishful thinking

Kind of suck to drive to Reno from Penasco to jump on a flight to P/V when I can just drive to the homeport from town and jump on a cruise ship and go down with family and not worry bout driving.
It's all just blah blah blah..... it'll work or i t won't ( the home port) but it won't matter or change because some gringo who lives in Santo Tomas wants to bash my hometown. The project has legs - maybe not the legs you want to see but legs none the less. Piss Piss Moan Moan , in the end you are the only one that cares - boring - boring - boring
rhino when a cruise ship created flume of turds wrap around Cholla bay you will change your tune. When you guys act like sheep it allows the backers of these projects to not do anything about the negative effects of development.
Well, I have stated before the building will go ahead regardless but Mexicoruss, I care.
I care that the things you, I and others love about Puerto Peñasco could be damaged in the name of progress.
I do believe that the things Jerry has posted are legitimate concerns and possibilities. A lot of these things are based off of studies done after the projects have had time to impact the ecosystems and economies. A lot of these studies have been done in/around areas with arguably much better infrastructures and more reliable controls and governing in place.
The successful ones have been deemed successful purely from the economic point of view (not always including the local population in those points of view) and the ecological impact has been negative in general. I don't think that this is just general speculation, these are real possibilities. The only speculative part of this project is the economic impact on the City and it's peoples.
I don't see how these postings can be seen as bashing Puerto Peñasco when to me it is the very opposite in that Jerry is pointing out that the ecosystem could be damaged beyond a usable point. Anyone that owns a business that relies on said ecosystem will loose as well.
What kind of tour could it be with out anything beautiful left to show anyone? A lunch consisting of seafood imported from somewhere else? A tour guide that has to start every sentence with "before the port ...this place used to be...".
In my opinion, I believe Jerry cares for Puerto Peñasco more than a lot of members give him credit for.
Quoted from George Santayana The Life of Reason (1905-1906) "Progress, far from consisting in change, depends on retentiveness. When change is absolute there remains no being to improve and no direction is set for possible improvement: and when experience is not retained, as among savages, infancy is perpetual. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."
Not trying to start a fight here by any means but I can not envision there not being a dark side to the light being seen at the end of this tunnel.
I became interested in the Homeport after a month long trip to Tasmania a year ago. Our surfer/ naturalist guide had been fighting a HOMEPORT on the Gold Coast for years.
Don't take everything so personal my booster friends ...were just talking here....

Environmentalists vs. Luxury Developers
Interesting article from 2007 about the price of progress and how it affects people and the environment. Outdated, but some good quotes from local residents that still apply today. What appears to be good for the community does not always work out for the little guy. http://worldpress.org/Americas/2914.cfm#down
If y'all are tired of Geraldine's information then just don't read it. Stop bashing him. Clearly there are lots of issues around this venture. I know nothing of the cruise industry and welcome that information. I know some about environmental issues and welcome that information. I know a lot about how the government works and really don't need to know more about that. If you don't like to see that information here ask for censorship.

Russ, that is one of the dumbest posts!! Are you content to allow others to make decisions for you while you keep your head in the sand ? If someone points out a potential problem are they bashing your hometown? If something gets a start should it always be left to develop irrespective of any unconsidered information that comes to light? Why are you pissing and moaning about this? Geraldine offers independent information and you want to shut him up?? Why don't you come up with the so called environmental study and make it public for discussion. Every problem issue that Geraldine points out should have been discussed in that report with reasons it is not an important environmental issue for Puerto Penasaco. They are all, in general, important issues relative to the impact of the cruise ships. There has been no mention of Beings from Outer Space or other crazy stuff. Find the report, let's read it.
Very cool... Wish I could see the logo or the hood ornament better, it kind of looks like it's part armored truck!
Based on the shape of the grill it looks like a Packard. Might be a White truck. They used to run tours with busses like that out of Santa Fe NM back in the 30's.

week 3 what can be done to minimize the damage this mistake creates?

"We go to these places because they’re beautiful. We may never come back, but if we do, don’t we want the magic to still be there? Don’t we want our kids and grandkids to enjoy these places too?"
Cruise ships are coming to Puerto Penasco. The water break is extending fast & Phase 2 the Pier / Dock construction has even already started. See 100 ft long large rebar tubes pictured below being assembled which will be the concrete dock posts. This will be Mexico's only cruise ship Home Port where cruise ships base & the biggest pier in North America. Over 5000 specialized concrete 10 & 20 ton blocks have been already created which will be placed soon. Get ready for the cruise ships!Rocky Point Times Newspaper
"We all bear some responsibility, but those whose money supports the ruinous ways bear the most."
And there in lies the problem. At this moment there seems to be no one nor any group that can say nay to this project. If there were there still wouldn't be enough positive money to counter the backers.
What sickens me the most is, even if it turns out that it destroys the ecosystem and turns the place into a trashy city park, not one of these backers would ever feel guilty about it or admit they were wrong.

So I take it you didn't like the vehicles your friends are trying to find for your tours?
You only come down and run a marathon or see the guau guau girls, why would someone like you be interested in taking a cruise?
Add eating tacos to that list and you're almost spot on...
Regarding the cruise terminal, I've got a few friends that seem interested in the idea of taking one. Personally, I'm not that fond of being stuck on a boat eating mediocre food while watching my waiter do the macarena, but to each their own...

Of course you are allowed, as we all are, I've done my share in life. But re read my comment , I did not call you stupid, just your post. Where's the environmental study???
Seriously, some of you are becoming curmudgeons. I think it's great Russ and his wife, Naomi, have made a wonderful life in Penasco. I'm calling a technical foul on you 4 amigos for excessive piling on- it's really getting repetitive.

Just dealing with the facts and one of those facts is Russ is a part time PAID front man for Rocky Point movers and shakers......Miramar is just mad downtown Tucson is coming alive, the streetcar Is a success and all those little people she sees from her foothills stronghold are having a great time.Perro ...who knows... Maybe he really wants to jamb on a third rate over the hill cruise ship with a herd of drunken .sweaty.over weight, sun burnt party till they drop cruise fans....after being stuck in a border traffic jamb for three hours then on return finding out the bad element drawn to town have burglarized his Las Conchas home.
"Seldom is heard a discouraging word and the skies are not cloudy all day" I get it but even in the song if a cautionary view was taken about protecting the essence of a place against the crass commercial interests of whoever runs the card game at this moment the Buffalo would not have been all killed off and the Antelope might still be playing...
The last cruise I was on was GREAT! Over 5000 people on the cruise ship. We visited Spain, Italy, Yugoslavia and spent an extraordinary amount of time off the beautiful coast of Lebanon... blowing shit up on a daily basis!
Think Nautical Ladder and the halted La Costera Jim. Filled in with drifting sand and incomplete poorly maintained roads...this wind mill will not need much help before it hits the ground...problem is the Sea of Cortez and the interests of american beach home owners will be damaged as it rises and then crashes to the earth.
My God Jerry, I'm no fan of the port. I used to enjoy the scene from the Wrecked and Mare Blu but now it's a bunch of rocks.
I swear though you have become more lugubrious than a Mahler Symphony. I thank God I've not got that much time left so
I won't die on the filth, waste and end of the earth that is known as Home Port. Cheerio.

Since you brought up burglarizes I overheard today that quite a few houses in Cholla have been cleaned out of furniture in the last week.

What a bitch huh GV, people need jobs to eat too. I mean I get it just a visitor couple times a year but you got to remember most people come to the USA and work under the table because there are no jobs in town. Homeport has its good and bad.

I bet the fish finder works really well on that panga!
While I am on the save the environment and make sure the locals get theirs side, I would really like to see some prospectus of how many LOCAL jobs they are planning on creating and what kind of environmental impact studies that show anything to the contrary of the possibilities that have been posted in this thread.
So far the only thing posted in any of the threads dealing with this issue that have been in the Pro is simply an interview saying that this will be great. And the only thing any person that is pro the port has had to offer is the fact they think anyone posting anything negative are an asshole.
I appreciate Jerry's passion for the subject and the fact he has spent time actually looking up and providing information that is relative to the subject. So I/we are not just going from someones unfounded opinion on the matter.
I am not speaking for anyone but myself when I say that, just because I am against the negative and very possible realities of the the impact this could have on the ecosystem doesn't mean I don't care about Puerto Peñasco. It's the exact opposite.
I hope for Puerto Peñascos sake that he is wrong.

The problem is RockyPoint cannot handle more people. The Sea can't take it,the infrastructure either ...those people may need jobs but chances are many will be filled by outsiders.I wish we had a good green card system were a guy or girl from Sonora could work for 6 months then by law had to return for 6 months to their town in Mexico....
Jerry, just like when Walmart and Sam's club were built there. The lines of Penasco people were long looking for work. The contractors brought in all their own workers. The home port may be no different. Who will be in charge of hiring these people to work the port? Who has port experience in Mexico?
They can't even get the rocks right......
Almost Free!
Hah Jerry, you're sounding angry again. We were at Janos last Friday with the "little people" as you say. The food was not as good as when it was at La Paloma. His Shrimp tacos there were the best outside of Penasco. We'll just have to eat them at Blancos along with their Ceviche from our "stronghold". Yes we saw the streetcar, but the overhead wires are UGLY. I'm surprised you're not talking about the visual pollution. I don't know why they don't put in a hybrid bus that looks like a trolley- much more environmentally conscious.
It would be nice to see any information on that. Something to the effect of, hiring X amount of people and providing paid training.
It would probably be feasible to relocate a hand full of people to run the show and not worry about the locals.
I have no clue how many people it will take to run the Port from a management position but there can't be that many people needed. Maybe 2 handfuls of baggage handlers... It would be really interesting to know this kind of info. Anyone?

Angry, no sorry I was just kidding you...funny your idea of slumming is eating at that fancy pants Euro joint...the streetcar deserves a ride before you decide...looks like a blue whale. Like it!
If the quality of life at vacation spot is negatively effected (crime, cruise ship related crowding, environmental issues etc.) You start seeing less long term visitor stays. This type of visitor builds houses, remodels, spends money at stores other that T-shirt shops. These people move on...the job gains might be significant ( most very low pay) but the job losses will be too. The municipality cannot handle this...they are political hacks that cannot even keep the potholes fixed on their section of the coastal.Do you see much hope they won't turn this into a mess?

Blanco tacos & Tequila nice place great happy hour, also nobody actually knew how downtown would take off, even the homeless have moved in with their little pads, you wouldn't happen to be one of the few making them Jerry?

Thinking , if ships actually do come, and that is not a given by far. One could take the condo rental market as sort of a model of what kind of work might be created. Keep in mind this is to be a home port where they embark and disembark. I guess there might be two different goups of employees, those at the port and those on the ship. They might have different employers, the port managers and the cruise ship managers.
Vacationers arrive and stay for a predetermined period, in a very restricted place on the ship. They eat, drink, sleep, party and create all the trash and stuff that those activities generate. This stuff, except for the poo apparently, is stored on the ship and the food and drinks are consumed. During this period the onboard crew serves, and cleans as needed. At the end of their vacation they leave and leave behind, trash, dirty linnen, dirty staterooms, dirty public areas, hallways decks, bars, restaurant. The trash has to be removed and hauled away, the linnens replaced with clean and the dirty stuff washed for reuse. Food and drink has to be delivered, loaded and stored. These activities might be carried out by the land crew. I would guess that they will try to have a short time in dock as that is dead time for income. Seems to me the in port crew might be larger than the on ship crew given the logistics involved. The in port crew will prolly not work much while the ship is crusing. So plug people into the kinds of work created if I am thinking right. You can prolly come up with some modifications to my thinking.
I guess there might be two different goups of employees, those at the port and those on the ship. They might have different employers, the port managers and the cruise ship managers.
Cruise ship companies are based in countries that don't have many (if any) labor laws. This allows them to pay basically whatever they want. If you ever go on a cruise, you'll notice that most workers are from countries even poorer than Mexico. If I were a local, why would I want to earn the same pay I'm already making to be stuck in crammed living quarters away from my family? Might as well just jump the border and work in the states...
As for on-shore crew, I have no idea. Hopefully given the logistics and the fact that they probably have to be Mexican, these people will make a fair wage. Of course this would mean ships actually come. I'd be curious to know how many people the new international airport employs? One, two people? I'm guessing once the dust settles after a big ribbon cutting ceremony with several politicians, this will suffer the same fate.
Well my brother in law who is very pro Port and cruising says there is one employee for every 2 passengers. So 3k passengers means 1500+ employees on board. Most likely they will be supplied by the cruise line so on shore there theoretically should be no less than 1500 jobs created?
So if the Police make $350 a month, I have heard in some cases it's half that in PP, then even at $6 a day then the port jobs should pay $42 a week at best if they work everyday...
IDK, this is almost laborious. We still wont know anything until it's done... Sure it will create some jobs and some off peak sales but can it really out weigh the possible negatives that have been brought up in this thread. I don't see it.
It will just be a place other people go to to go to other places.... Kinda like Phoenix. Just a hub for Vegas and California and Mexico tourists.
So what place south of PP on the coast is relatively safe, has great fishing and exploring with a small town feel to it?

Every where you look their is a new fence going up the beach we loved is no more, unless you live in a condo. We will see when the new Mayer is elected and all the cash is gone what will happen to the progress.
You know Mexicoruss, I kinda feel like you should be more concerned about this. I do not know as much about you as others and have no judgement but if I understand correctly you run a tour business? Where do you go and what do you show people that utilize your services?
It would be hard to see how this can't affect your business if everything cool is fenced off and spoken for. In the stretch of beach past the the RV park near Wrecked , (Bone Beach?) aside from the possible dead animals washed up there is nothing but garbage there and every time I go back there is new fencing.
If the waters are void of the beings that are there at the present what will you have to talk about?
How interested will people be in the seafood that is running the same price as it is in the grocery stores back home?
Aside from taking people to show them property for sale, trinkets at the stores, some of which are made in China and the the port and ship itself, will it be a tour or just a large over priced taxi ride around town?
I don't think that anything I am saying will change your blah blah perception of this subject but I just can't believe that you don't think this could affect you, and possibly for the worse.

The only long term job that will be created is the 1 or 2 security workers that may be guarding the empty facility. Granted they may get a ship that will come in initially but then they will realize what a cluster that was and fuggetaboutit... Even more hilarious is thinking this will be an actual home port. Yeah, the Mexican economy can really support the Mexican citizen wanting to fly to RP to take a cruise. I look at Semana Santa as a typical Mexican vacation. Rocky Point gets about a half million visitors from surrounding areas and if you ask the restaurants how much more business they took in, they would say they lost money. The people with disposable income tends to shy away from RP and the typical Mexican vacationer spends their money on cheap beer and the cheapest eats they can wrap their lips around. By the way, how many American blue haired codgers do we all know that will want to drive to Mexico to take a cruise? If the developers would of ever taken a survey they would have realized that the typical cruiser would rather take there chances with Ebola than drive down to Mexico where the chances (in their mind) of getting murdered are better than even. If the developers were truly marketing the Mexican population, it would have been done closer to their population centers rather than Northern Sonora. I predict that in a few years we will be referring to this new eyesore as boondoggle point.

I need to say I hate the home port thing but Russ does a lot more than drive people around rocky point He will take you on tours to places that most of you have never seen. So with that being said Russ you need to educate those who really don't know you. Hate the port but respect you for the person that you are.
A little news from the grapevine ...some workers have not been paid this month ....The thirty feet of depth just won't be there at low tide so that really complicates scheduling ....also a northerner will really cause problems

Please don't get me wrong. I do not know what all details are involved in what Mexicoruss does for a living. I simply am stating that if what he does is showing people things they haven't seen before that he should be concerned that those things will no longer be available as they are now.
I am not trying to disrespect anyone with my point of view. I would hate for his business to suffer from undetermined circumstances caused by this project.
Hell I would love to be a guide, the things and places I have seen on my exploratory adventures down there should be seen and appreciated by anyone that is interested.
In a way I am envious Mexicoruss gets to make a living doing something he loves in a place that he loves. No disrespect intended at all.

The issue will be resolved by economics. There are many unfinished projects everywhere you look in Mexico. Many exist in RP. One flagrant example is an iron high-rise that was started several years ago in Mirador. It was worked night and day, around the clock, then suddenly abandoned, like swarming termites.

Like any good investigative reporter you should never give up your sources! LOL.
Realistically if Jerry's comment weren't something more or less expected then I could see people doubting it. But come on it has happened before and will happen again, whether on this project or others. It is almost guaranteed.

So we got a guy that lives in Bowie Az telling us whats going on in pto penasco, Been on here over 10 years and he's no saint, always hearsay.
On a side note once again this is another thread where everyone that disagrees with Jerry is purely doing it from a point of opinion. Not one bit of information has been produced to even counter anything he has said or posted.
Prove him wrong, provide some information contrary to what he says or posts. All the replies have basically been, hey fuk you budy, and unless you live here.... I mean even something like"my buddy that is working on the port says they have all been paid." would be something
Anything at all, prove him wrong don't just say screw you....
Also heard A outfitter from Baja was here looking for a place to do camel tours in the Pinacates or to the south.....which from my trip to Egypt I can tell you is a real pain in the ass but fun. Also looking for a zip line location down south and found a good one in the mountains you access by crossing the tracks before the Alduna checkpoint 30 miles south. He was really discouraged by the level of Homeport progress too..
