All the Phoenix local channels ran a story the day of the event, basically the same story on all stations. Now they have moved on to the continuing USA daily violence stories.

Don't get me wrong, most of me does not want them to start a panic about how unsafe it is in Mexico, like they always do particularly before a major holiday, but they got this story and . . . . WTF???

Mmmmm....think wanting a piece of the homeport may be why?

i'm sure my kids didn't see the story, they don't live in Phoenix, the grandkids are flying in to Phoenix. They live up North and don't keep tabs on stuff that isn't right in their newspaper front page. I think I will have to call the kids and tell them, let it be their call of course....

The plane tickets to Phoenix have already been purchased, but what could be a worse circumstance than this?

Yes, I obviously would and and am the day after Christmas. My kids and grandkids love the beach and always enjoy Rocky Point; I don't expect this time to be any different.

Raphael's water truck was stolen and driven into the desert and is now in pretty bad shape. Not known if it is related to the other events.

I didn't use the truck's owners name for his privacy, it was stolen and found abandoned at one of the roundabouts.
Rumors abound as to why it was left and caught fire.
Yes it is pretty trashed, will see if it gets back on the road again.
geezer
okay the cheerleading for rocky point is a little creepy.....a couple military helicopters came in and fired into a condo complex, there was a machine-gun car chase through the streets, trucks blown up, bodies were stolen. Banks were closed... I would think that could make the beach seem not so fun

Kinda like flying after 9/11. Couldn't be any safer right after.
However, you should expect more military and additional security in the coming months well into 2014. Might be a little unnerving for some.

Yes I would, in fact my kids and grandkids will be there for a week right after Christmas. I will be more aware of my surroundings and what is going on around us but we will all be there at the Sonoran Sea Resort.

And I'm willing to bet a stop at Max's for at least one of those great Bloody Marys. ;)

okay, my thinking is that the guy whose body was stolen is actually still alive and somewhere in Penasco which means there is danger of another firefight....am i correct in thinking this? I don't want my grandkids coming down if this is the case. I'm not trying to say "Yay Rocky Point" when obviously we're in the middle of a war...I don't care how much money people have invested here, if it's foolish, I don't want to bring young children into this situation...what's your opinion guys?

I live in RP. Im sure your grandchildren go to school in the USA. Your not going to not let them attend school because their are mass shootings at many USA high schools. In the USA they are killing kids in RP they are not.

From one Geezer to another, calling and letting them know is a wise choice. I would bring mine down and will but not until school's out.

If you're going to go around looking over your shoulder, you are wasting your time and money. Being aware of your surroundings is wise,
but letting the gangs run your life is not worth it. Relax, have fun and enjoy the good Mexican people there. That's what I do and will continue to do.

But that's just me. Nobody messes with the GV Desperado, especially with my brick laden purse.

I was just outside of Sonoyta on the highway to Rocky Point when 2 or 3 cop cars, plus a army truck whizzed past me at high speed coming from Sonoyta. I did not see them again until we hit Rocky Point. At the place on the way out of town where the army checkpoint used to be.

What seemed unusual was, it looked like a barricade. There were piles of cop cars, both the army and the cops were armed to the teeth, with automatic weapons lots of guys there. It looked like they were waiting for someone. it's the first time I have seen cops heavily armed as well as the army.

I wonder what was going down.

This is my 1st post and I apologize for not knowing the procedure, but I am looking for anyone going down to RP. I have a shower mixer part (3"x2") that I need to get down to my contractor. If anyone is going down in the next day or 2, please let me know.
Thank you.

and why does the government allow the guy they want to kill to be part owner and a resident at a tourist condo complex? Why is this wise to promote tourism? How is this a safe situation for our grand children? Can I get the official list of which hotels have cartel owners? It seems the Federal Gov has this information, right?

Hi everyone! I thank all who posted info on this event. As one who just comes 3 or 4 times a year and goes further south most of those trips, this hasn't changed anything for me. I think the media has gone full "Boy who cried wolf" when it comes to Penasco. Most of the past "is it safe" flurries followed incidents that had little or nothing to do with Rocky Point. When something actually happens? One day coverage and back to our local shootings of the day. One of those local shootings a week ago involved one of my offspring as "wounded by gun shot and taken to the hospital." This was at a friend's apartment in a nice complex in Tempe. One young man was killed by the nut bag that shot my loved one. I am coming back to Penasco as soon as I can make it. I would take my adult children and their little tiny ones without hesitation. That being said, what went down on Sandy Beach was pretty crazy and real scary for all those nearby. You guys have kept Stuart really busy and he has not put down his whistle or taken off the striped shirt since the bullets flew. Play nice. Take care and stay safe on both sides of the fence.

1. We will never know every detail of what, why and how
2. This is the point where forums become counter productive with he said, I heard, my taco guy told me...
3. Personally, I would consider the safety record of the tourist area over the last 10 years or so? Has this happened before? Is it a continual problem or was it a 1st time event? No different than if we heard that the same Safeway in Tucson had multiple shootouts and innocent lives lost in more than one occasion... that would be cause for concern. If we are talking about an isolated incident, do we live our lives based on isolated incidents of violence?
4. Again, we will never know all the details.
5. Whats ironic is that those who say I will never go back... are often the ones that do come back. I understand and I am empathetic to those who were in the complex and even those who were in Esmeralda (having a complex between them and the action). Sometimes it is best to breath and take a break from the blogs and news and assess everything at a later date. Remember how many of us obsessed watching 23hrs a day of the events of 9-11? At some point the rumors become wild and that is when too much media and too much info is not healthy.

And this is how a thread becomes counter productive with boredom and the hope for more breaking news. sad

What? They would be the worlds dumbest criminals to buy stuff using their real names. Ask the US government for a list of gang members in your neighborhood or the hotel you stay at next time.

Oh come on. You really think he just strolled into Bella Sirena with a real estate agent one day and said, "I wanna buy a villa or condo." They said okay, fill out this application for our homeowner's association and he did.

Name: Macho Prieto
Occupation: Sr. Vice President, Northwest Region, Sinaloa Cartel
References: Chapo Guzman

At which time the President of the HOA of Bella Sirena, called the Mexican government and they said: "We're sorry Mr. Prieto, we don't allow people like you to live here." I heard they have vacancies at the Sonoran Sky, though!"

Federal police chief Manuel Mondragon said Thursday night that Inzunza's men took his body with them. Mexico's Interior Secretary Miguel Angel Osorio Chong earlier said he had received reports that the body had been stolen but would not confirm he was dead.

My question in this whole thing is how did his body disappear? I assume he was killed at the complex and then taken away. we only have 2 or 3 exit roads from the area. did he get on a jet sky or banana boat? I thought the entire area was on lock down with military, how does a speeding car running away from the scene and avoid a helicopter, navy and military on the only 2 roads (with no one else on the road)? Jack Bauer would be proud of that escape. (serious question), how do the authorities know he was killed if he was taken away by his group? Did they check his pulse and then took a smoke break and left the body? If this was a sting operation for a few months, how do you let the #1 target disappear? Sounds like a bad comedy. I could just see it "paco, you stand here and watch this body... paco gets hungry and leaves post. drug lords buddy was under the next car waiting for the perfect moment to take the body and drive out (he had an parking pass from the HOA so it was the cover he needed).

"A federal official said Gonzalo Inzunza was killed and his body taken away by the shootout survivors."

What survivors? I thought that they shot all the bad guys. If there were any cartel survivors, then they didn't finish the job and did not plan the raid as good as is being said. If there were more, then they should have been caught of killed as well.
ben21
Well in all fairness, they did just leave all those bodies out there for tourists to drive by and video tape. So I guess they had plenty of time

Indeed.

He's dead. The government said so. The government NEVER lies. Bwhahaha!
Pretty hard to prove anybody is dead WITHOUT A BODY.

Commander to Mexican Private: "You SURE it was Macho you shot, right Private?"
Private: "Si, senor. It was him."
Commander: "You'd SWEAR that, right?"
Private: "Si, senor... on my madre's grave!"
Commander: "So... where's the body?"
Private: "Uhh... it was laying right there a minute ago."

The Attack on Rocky Point - Part Deux - Zombie Macho Returns! (and he's pissed!)

Better hope the military has lots of Hornaday bullets. And ALWAYS double-tap! :D

gumshoe: Senor, I went for a mango break and I was only gone for 1 minute.
jefe: why did the military, navy, DEA agent, military convoy not see them sneak away?
gumshoe: I think they were distracted by a tourist in Esmeralda that was doing on the scene interviews from his balcony

I was there staying at Las Palmas 305 when it happened. Saw plainclothes people in the parking lot acting real sneaky (peeking around corners) stashing pistols under a truck in the parking lot, then coming back to get them. Same guys were run off by security, then police kicked in 105 (2 floors directly below) and found machine guns w/grenade launchers on them. Right where they were previously. I really think we may have seen 2 of the 'bad guys'.

Later saw the new Rolls out there talking to 2 men, when everyone else was taking cover.

Left Las Palmas at 2:00 to go eat downtown, packed up before we left. Took photos of all the shot up cars along the way. (5 of them) went to Bella Sirena taking photos of the outside and cars when a fellow told me about the shot up bulletproof glass SUV inside the complex. Decided to walk down and take some photos....Ooops Mexican military (brown camo) snagged me immediately on my walk down to it. They noticed my camera.

First 2 guys spoke no english and called for another guy (I'm by myself) who does speak english. "Did you take photos?" Only of the palm trees here...I replied. "SHOW ME" he demanded. I had to show him my photos. All the shot up cars, helicopters....empty bullet casings. He said "You know in Mexico you can go to jail for taking these photos....I can call my boss over here" I replied with a that's Ok, I'll delete them no problem, sorry.

he was asking my name, what type work you do? where you live? WHY you take these pictures? Luckily I had some photos of food from lunch, and some condo photos. Otherwise I think I would have been in a heap of $%#% Tense moment, for sure.DSC_1816f (Custom).jpg

How ignorant are some of you? I can't stand this America is much more dangerous argument anymore! Some of the people on this forum need a lesson on PROBABILITY. Using statistics allows us to calculate PROBABILITY. I'm sick of hearing the, "you still go to the movies right? You still send your kids to school right? " argument from the cheerleaders. Someone mentioned that they will continue to go to Mexico and then stated why it's so dangerous to live in the US because of movie theater shooting, school shooting and even CARJACKING. Ok, ya'll are starting to get carried away. Fear mongering is the new sales pitch to why RP is safe. Let me tell you something about PROBABILITY.

Let's take carjacking as an example. I have been riding in a car for 29 years. Let's assume for the sake of finding a reasonable PROBABILITY that I've ridden in a vehicle once a day for 29 years. 29(365)=10,585 Now let's see the daily percentage (daily chance) of getting carjacked. 1/10585=.0000944733

I also loved the comment about how drug users caused this and if people would just stop using drugs we wouldnt have things like this happen. That is got to be the most IGNORANT comment I have ever read/heard.

The whole deal was a tragedy, but the way I feel is that if you are afraid of what may happen if you venture to RP, don't go. It's anybody's guess as to when something like this will happen again but I will take my chances because I don't personally feel that anyone is targeting Americans or tourists in general. I will probably have to take another look at the situation if tourists are harmed, but for now I think I'll plan my next fishing trip.
Mexico Joe
Also, PEOPLE quit using the, ITS LIKE ANYWHERE YOU GO, YOU NEED TO BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS.

Being aware of your surroundings is like the saying, perception is reality. Even if you're the king of awareness, what sign would have alerted you that something was about to go down? Answer is, NOTHING. So being aware of your surroundings is something you do in a dark alley way, not a quiet resort complex. If you were standing outside that morning near the pool bar sipping on a cup of coffee, do you think your awareness would have tipped you off that something was going to happen? Probably not, just saying.

No, you could. It just involves making it past the 4th grade.
tequilatodd
what about getting shot by stray gunfire at the boarder?
Of course they are not targeting American tourists. Like I said earlier, you may be at the wrong place at the wrong time.
That would suck....but it happens. Happens everywhere

Joe, what is the probability of an American Tourist being killed in Sandy Beach (ok all of Penasco if that statistic is easier to put together)? How many american tourists have been killed in Penasco over the last 10 or 20 years. Since we are on the topic of probability, is an american at greater risk of dying from an ATV accident, drowning, choking on a taco, or drinking the water at Gua Gua's? Curious how death by cartel violence compares to other deaths based on probability for said American Tourist visiting the beach area. In my opinion, comparing the probability of an American tourist being killed by an act of cartel violence is about the same as the probability of someone being shot at a movie theatre in the US (again, using probability). Unless you are a klan member watching a movie in downtown Detroit.

How many non-Mexican tourists in general have been killed in all of Mexico (not just beach areas) because of cartel violence? Probably zero?

DRY HEAVE, obviously you're missing the point. What I'm saying is the people that respond with the BS about getting shot in a movie theater or shot in a school or carjacked. You're an idiot if you keep pointing out that these things can happen to you in the US and that RP is much safer than the US because of these aforementioned circumstances. I'm not denying that RP is safe. That's not what I was commenting on. This is a typical cheerleader comment, "Yes RP is safe, look at the US, there are school shootings and movie theater shootings and carjackings, that doesnt happen in RP...". All Im saying is that it is invalid and lame if you respond to how safe RP is with, look at what happens in America on a daily basis.

I was just putting it into perspective that yes these things occur but NO, ITS NOT PROBABLE

Unless you're Black of course..http://tracesofreality.com/2013/05/14/28-years-ago-the-philadelphia-police-department-bombed-and-burned-a-city-block/
In 1985 the group made national news when police dropped a bomb on the Osage house from a helicopter in an attempt to end an armed impasse. The explosion and ensuing fire killed 11 people, including five children and the group's leader, John Africa. Only two occupants survived—Ramona, an adult and Birdie, a child. In addition, approximately 60 other (non MOVE-affiliated) homes were destroyed as the entire block burned.

OK, leave out the "tourist".

So then they're just saying the US government took him so that they don't look like total shmucks. He's either still alive, or his own guys stole the body. I'll bet he's still alive and they never even got him in the first place.

Tom the surfcaster

My son's car got stolen last year, at gunpoint, right in front of our work, which is 7th ave and McDowell, Phx. (Busy area). Helicopters found him on the freeway, since a blue striped mustang is easy to spot. They got the guy in Glendale, running into a stash house, and found a dozen or so illegals.
He was shaken up, but he didnt stop going to work, or parking his car, etc..
Shit happens, you have to live your life for yourself, and not in fear of others, otherwise, why ever leave the house?

My son was carjacked at gunpoint, as i posted earlier, and I have had 2 cars and one motorcycle stolen, and once had a break in, all in Phoenix. Never had a car stolen in Mexico, never had a break in, in my 19 years of going to Penasco at least 4 times a year, (at least 12 times a year lately) and I do not live in Snottsdale, I live in the hood, or so I am told.
Just sayin'

So the Mexicans don't turn him into another Jesus Malverde..........there is even a tire shop in Phoenix..named after Malverde, with Marijuana leaves on the sign. http://voices.yahoo.com/jesus-malverde-narco-saint-42822.html?cat=9 They don't have his body......

Isn't that what they did with Bin Laden, dispose of the body so there is no martyrdom? Just a thought.

Just reading this over again. Not doubting you Rick, just a question. So this Rolls was in the parking lot at the Sonoran Sea and whoever was driving was talking to the two men like nothing was happening at all during all this shooting? The two guys outside the car don't seem to be concerned at the sounds of gunfire - by their body language. Just curious from your viewpoint, what you think?

Shooting wasn't going on at this moment, but it wasn't over long before it. They were the first people we saw out moving around after. Other than the guys with guns.

It sure seems they knew something that the people hiding in their bathrooms didn't; looks like a ghost town.

that's what caught my attention. (and a ROLLS) They talked for 5 min or more. Coincidence?

What happened to the Rolls Royce?

Ive seen the Rolls Royce around RP a lot. I was told by RP Dan, real estate agent in RP, that he knows the person who owns the RR & its only an American who owns a place in Sandy Beach who drives it in occasionally. A top Cartel guy is gonna be in a big heavy truck w/ full armor like the one that was shot up. Hard to keep a low profile & blend in driving a RR....

that's what I used to say too, Todd.

But helicopter gunships don't open up with mini 50 cal's in populated tourist areas in the U.S.

If you have never heard-seen one of these, it's the craziest $#& you'll ever hear, or see. Guaranteed...

The light in the parking lot right below us was hit.....bullets were flying.

" it's the craziest $#& you'll ever hear, or see. Guaranteed..."

I agree 100%, we will never forget the sound, hail of bullets and the fury unleashed by that gun. The things you saw at Las Palmas, and the OP 'Weird scene' has me now thinking about some of the stuff on Tuesday afternoon and evening we saw.

For example, there was a new security guard at the main gate, this after almost a month. Despite the pass on our dash and our wristbands he insisted on seeing our ID. Weird?

There are other strange things that happened that evening, but I think with all the unknowns it is only conjecture - not facts. Besides, what's the saying? Disgression is the better part of valour?

I think the less that is said about this now, the better - like many posters have said we will likely never know the whole story, or even close to it.

I just can't understand how someone or some people could get away-escape from all that firepower, and to be carrying a body too?

One simple explanation is that he wasn't there and no one was carried anywhere..
mis2810
He wasn't trying to keep a low profile. It was widely known he was living in RP. What some people are not understanding around here is that a guy like Macho Prieto is not afraid of the police, the army, etc.. He is/was THE LAW. They control all those people you think they're hiding from. We're not talking about some petty thief who the police are going to get and throw in jail for a year. The law is on their payroll. They are the bosses. The army went in to get him because he pissed off the guy he reports to. Think about the Italian mafia back in the day. Were they afraid of the police? NO! The police worked for them. It's the same situation, but magnified by a million.

The one guy looks like a security guard. Was the other guy a white guy or a Mexican?
Rick S
I was told by a Bella Sirena resident that the Silver Toyota Rav 4 blocking their gate was the DEA's car.

I can't believe Macho could live openly with the DEA knowing he was there, and they let him slide?

Seems like the Mafia used a single shot to the back of the head to off someone. Why all the drama in this case?

Both Mexicans. If he was security he didn't go to the guard shack ever.

I think that thinking back over the events prior helps to explain a lot. What other things did you think back on and notice that were out of the ordinary? When my husband and I were down over T-giving we noticed the same type of helicopter buzzing over the ocean and then over the desert behind the resorts. We both commented how we'd never seen that before. Later in the day my husband asked a vendor about it and the vendor said that lately they had been doing that a lot. Preparing for this mission so that it wouldn't seem out of the ordinary when it finally happened? Who knows? But we certainly thought it was strange at the time.
