Penasco Police Chief Landagaray shot six times, clinging to life Police Chief Erick Francisco Landagaray is clinging to life and his security escort is recovering from wounds after they were ambushed last night at 10:55 p.m. on Rio Suchiate Blvd. in front of the Pan Bimbo warehouse. Security escort Luis Huerta Ibarra sustained several wounds but was listed as being out of danger and is expected to make a full recovery, Chief Landagaray, who was said to have suffered six gunshot wounds, is currently reported in very grave condition and was transported by air to Hermosillo at 5:30 a.m. after emergency surgery. Witnesses report that Jeep Cherokee SUV was used in the attack. Municipal, State and Federal law enforcement agencies quickly mobilized in an effort to find those responsible for the attack, which occurred as they made their nightly rounds of the city. In the aftermath of the incident, rumors were running rampant, among them that a warning message was transmitted over police radios by the assailants or their associates. Also rumored was that there was an attack on the home of Mayor Alejandro Zepeda. As is often the case with rumors, this has proven to be false. Puerto Penasco Mayor Alejandro Zepeda Munro was at the hospital to offer support to the victims and their families. “Visitors should know that increased military and police presence on the streets of the city are to be expected as part of the standard operating procedure when something like this happens”, said a high-ranking government official. “The increased patrols are just part of what we do to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors”.
From a commenter on El Impartial:
"Erick is a good person, but that could be seen coming, the control of the town is heavily controlled by people in big league drug and the saddest thing is that everyone knows who you are, where they move, its people and so on. never seen anything like this and yet we hear on the radio and on TV and newspapers statewide "THE BEST DESTINATION PENASCO. The best destination for anyone if we see here impunity, armed people, people with bodyguards. It is a very bad message for Ernesto Munro.
My daughter sent me a text from work earlier saying the cashier there told her there were eight people killed in RP last night. I sent a text back asking where the cashier heard this. The reply I got was "a guy was on his computer (I'm assuming it was a customer, it's a restaurant) and read about it and called border patrol and they confirmed it". Is the killing of the three men at the OXXO, the shooting of the chief and his escort, and the shot up Jeep on the highway all connected??

I don't understand your reference to Ernesto Munro. Can you please explain?
Well Kenny I am sure Russ will be able to put his spin doctoring skills to work on this for you.
It's not going to change a whole lot for you and I, and others who've been going down most of their lives, but it's going to have to be spinning mighty fast for a lot of other folks.:aagh:
Ernesto is the State Secretary of Public Security, and if I'm not mistaken they just did, or were going to bring on 250 more public safety offices, and that was supposed to alleviate some fears. Yes, this is a very bad message for both Ernesto, and PP.

Aw Submarine, it's up there now. The technical problems that continue to plague me will make an old lady out of me yet. That's why I came back and uploaded the whole story here on the forum.

Ah yes, all those technological wonders that were going to make our life so much better and easier, but for the most part don't!.. My best, or favorite technological wonder right off the top of my head, is my 35 year old cast iron skillet!
HAPPY, be nice, Russ is in the US. Some of his family passed away in a terrible car accident in Tuscon.
Manny, ~~~ Thank you for advising me of this, I am very, very, sorry to hear this, ~~~ Russ as well as his family & friends has my condolence's
in this time of sorrow, ~~~ of recent there has been a flurry of accidents in Tucson that we have heard of.
this does not read good, what is the reason for the attempted killings? Do not get it.
This is a warning to everyone. Now the individual policeman will be offered "silver or lead? your choice amigo"...meaning take a bribe or you are next. they want to own Rocky Point apparently.
The last paragraph from the news story in the El Sol del Caborca online newspaper about the Police Chief says this........".While the frequency police officer in Puerto Penasco be heard threatening voices saying they would "break" all the police if they tried to stop them, leaving a mute silence of fear in the environment and the ranks of the officers."
the translation is not so good but gives an window of perhaps what is going on.
I don't like to copy and paste but I can't get the link to post but heres the whole article if interested.

Anita, in my original report I mentioned that it was rumored that local law enforcement had been warned on their own radio frequency. The exact words used have varied, depending on who is doing the telling, so I opted to not be specific. Rumors are going crazy and I intend to supply the truth without fueling any fires. I can assure you that none of the other news sources have information that I don't have. The minute I hear more, you'll all be the first to know. Promise.
It's hard when good people put there life on the line for the good of others. Anyone who takes a postion of leadership and tries to clean up corruption gets high marks in my book. Our prayers are with his family and the next person who steps into his shoes.
I heard from a reliable source that the police chief passed away this morning. Very sad, god bless him and his family.
Suart, he isn't out of the woods yet, but he has not died. After seeing this post I called Fausto again just to confirm that he is still clinging to life. With each passing hour that he survives, his chances become that much better. Keep him in your prayers. I've been assured that any major changes will be sent to me and Manny, so be patient.

That's good news then. And indeed, he is in my prayers. I had heard this via phone just a short time ago from someone with family ties, but personally have no way of confirming it. But I'm glad to hear that he is still clinging to life.
Looks like the chief will live so i think this posting from a guy on kgun 9 forum is within bounds:
"never hang out in front of a place called the ..."Bimbo" Warehouse....you're just asking for trouble"
I was waiting for someone to say this. It's the oldest argument in the world and doesn't mean a darned thing.
"Safe" is perception more than reality. That goes for anywhere. Would I feel safe in Chicago, as your link describes? Mostly, I would. But not in the neighborhoods where the black-on-black violence described in your link is taking place. Or Detroit... or DC... or wherever. I (and the majority of us) wouldn't be in those neighborhoods to begin with, anymore than I'd be hanging out in the gang barrios in South Phoenix or Tucson. That's just asking for trouble, unless you belong there, even if you do belong there. Does it make the violence justified? No, it doesn't.
The type of violence happening in Sonora right now is about two things - retribution and control. You can cite a thousand different links about US cities and the violence within them, but you won't be able to cite cases where the established civic leadership - mayors, police chiefs, journalists, ministers, etc. - are currently being ambushed and gunned down execution style as they are throughout Mexico. Sure, there is the occasional whack job that takes a gun and goes after city hall here in the U.S. But it's not the orchestrated terrorism like that occuring in Mexico. Bodies being mutilated, heads cut off and rolled down the halls of public buildings, or bodies hung from overpasses. Sick, sick stuff, knowingly done to invoke fear and send a strong message about who really is in control.
The movie "Apocalypse Now" comes to mind. The story Marlon Brando tells near the end before being beheaded of how his Airborne company innoculated all the children of a village, only to return the next day to find a pile of cut-off arms in the village square. He understood what it took to be able to do this and the sheer terror it invoked. Those same words come to mind now - "The horror... the horror..."
So, back to perception. We see the beautiful beaches, the condos, the friendly folk and we have a perception of safety, as well we should. Nothing bad is supposed to happen in paradise. But there is a reality that escapes us as gringos, one that we don't readily want to admit - what is happening in the rest of Mexico is starting to show its ugly face in the place we know, love and have always felt perfectly safe in - Puerto Penasco.
Will I still go? Yes, but I probably won't take my family. Will I feel safe doing it? Not as safe as I used to, but that's my perception. While I'm willing to put any concerns about my own safety aside, I'm not so quick to do so for the rest of my family. This could be the end of the violence, or it could only be the beginning. Only time will tell.
Violence can happen anywhere at any time. I have to drive through some crappy neighborhoods just to get to work everyday unless I go 20 minutes out of my way. Am I going to stop driving the normal route? No? I'm also not going to live my life in fear. I had to go to Juarez 3 times last year - if I lived through that I'll live through a few RP trips.
I feel really bad for the people of Penasco in light of the current violence. Don't you think that there will be a huge "police" presence which could actually improve the situation for visitors from now on?
You can pass this on if you wish. There is a HUGE Federal Military stop in full operation as I write, 6/21/10 Noonish, close to the entrance to the Pinacate. Fully armed and uniformed military as reported, not Federal or local police. All vehicles are being stopped, people are required to exit the vehicle and it is carefully inspected.
I just drove up Calle 13 and was passed by a convoy of no less than 15 PP Police cars heading down toward the Hotel del Sol and Pinacate Condos. Lights no sirens. Could not see where or if they stopped. I'm heading down there now to see what I can see.
As I said a month ago, Ive been going to Lobos for 25 years and this is hitting a little close to home. People that know me in Lobos know this is very hard for me to do, but I can't keep going down wondering if myself or worse my wife would come to harm because I said it only happens to others. I just can't imangine not going down, but I am getting a little nervous. I LOVE LOBOS and the people there know I do, Leigh

No worries Mate! This shit happens when you can't sue a business partner (and his protectors) that screws you over. You have more chance of me shoot you with my potatogun from Santo Tomas. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdFK5eVmZ3o&feature=related I'm a bit worried about bringing it down..military checkpoints and all
I've been down in 3 out of the last 4 months..... Maybe I need a space,------ instead of a smiley :D... There's just a few simple rules to follow, and NOT hanging out with a guy with a potato gun that looks like it would fire a mortar round should be one of them!
Thanks, Kenny!! Our reporter on the street!! Thanks for the up-to-date info!
On edit: That's okay even if you aren't on the street - love ya anyway (not in THAT kind of way, but you know what I mean!)
~~~ Hey my friend Kenny, ~~~ look here ~~~ Stuart say he ~~~ LOVES ONLY YOU, ~~~ sounds like ~~~ "FAIRY BEACH" ~~~ to me ~~~ what does ~~~ "THAT" ~~~ mean ~~~ Kiss, Kiss, ~~~
Im with Kenny on this one, what do you tell people now about Penasco?! I cant stand up for RP now that this shit is happening. The worst part is thinking that you might have to stop going to a place that you love because of the "what ifs". When do you come to that conclusion, when its too late? This whole situation sucks. What I dont understand is what is the significance of RP to the cartels? It seems to me like its in the middle of nowhere as far as drug routes are concerned. I mean strategically it doesnt seem to be an important spot to HOLD. TJ, Juarez and Nogi obviously have benefits to the cartel being the entry points for drugs and human smuggling. What benefits are there to holding or maintaining a presence in RP? Its off the beaten path of Mexico highway 15 which is the main artery that runs North from mainland Mexico but highway 8 to Lukeville? I dont understand, thats why I really never thought RP would ever be involved in this growing problem. Obviously it was always a possibility, but the likelyhood seemed minuscule. Its hard to believe that its an important distribution location or even a continuation from another distribution location. There isnt a sea port and like I said highway 8 doesnt really seem like the best way to get drugs to the states. At this point, America should consider the Mexican cartels the same as the Taliban or Al Queda, terrorists! It isnt even business anymore, its <I AM A CHILD AND CAN'T USE MY BIG BOY WORDS><I AM A CHILD AND CAN'T USE MY BIG BOY WORDS><I AM A CHILD AND CAN'T USE MY BIG BOY WORDS><I AM A CHILD AND CAN'T USE MY BIG BOY WORDS>ing terrorism. Can anyone elaborate?
It may not be a distribution point, but with the growth that PP has seen in the last 10 years or so, you can bet that some of the getgo money was dirty, and some bad boy's have vested interest's all over town.... Why wouldn't they?
The next unanswered question might be," If so, why aren't they keeping the peace around their investments, if they have the clout?" Generally, turf wars are very bad for business.
So, if there's a huge military checkpoint on Hwy. 8 like Kenny's friend said, then it's really no different than driving from San Luis to El Golfo. There must be something worth it for the cartels in Rocky Point - El Golfo is even more in the middle of nowhere and they've had that checkpoint for years.
The problem is the average tourist is scared shitless when they come across Mexican military. They're not going to want to stop and get out of their cars and let the military search the cars. So either way, PP will suffer. Personally, I'm not sure whether I feel better with the military checkpoint or not. In the rest of Mexico the cartels gun down the military. I wouldn't want to be stopped at the checkpoint when that happens. Or do they leave the road unmonitored? Either way it's bad news. But I'm still goin' . . .
Wow what a waste of gold plating...even i have better weaponry that that piece of Chino crap!
bullet casings from a "Cuerno de chivo" were found at many recent executions form public servants in Rocky Point. THe Arb executed in May was alarming to me. I did not post it but there is a story not being told.
I do not know the story, but life in PP from a locals "pow" and a Condo owners or visitor is different. (point of view)
I posted months ago that the locals are scared. The kidnapping of the Judicial arb and subsequent murder along with the Police; plus the killings along the Road to PP seem a retribution and reactive to something bad. An escalation is occurring.
"Cuerno de Chivo" casings? Are they not traceable to the same "Chivo".
To your point I think it really is no big deal.Remember when the accountant and his dad were murdered after stealing the 100 k from the high end condo project? The one all the Phoenix movers and shakers own in(built with narco money?) A bill came due and payment was extracted.This was a warning and may just be the wakeup call the pigeon coop developers needed not to take that easy money.
Malecon facelift... no just a better sewer system.
Stuart was saying he loved to eat at the outside marts in the Malecon until he heard from insiders that the sewage that overflows is dried by the Good ol'RP heat and then flies into the air and into food. Yummm.
Really?
I heard from a local that lives there that what they are doing is putting all the electric lines under ground to conform to some kind of Port regulation about not having electric poles and cables on the open. Anyway, made sense to me since I saw the tubing used, ti was a little to small for sewage. Ill check, but really enjoyed lunch at the thirsty parrot yesterday.
Stuart was referring to CALLE TRECE not the Malecon, but either way Ill have to see scientific evidence that this is actually possible. JERRY, Im pretty sure you were joking but Ive learned in college that its not a good idea to copy paste anything from WIKIPEDIA, I used a big boy word that us adults cant handle apparently. Its only a bad word cause society says so. I dont understand why i cant use the F word. I wasnt personally attacking anyone just mearly trying to show my emotions through the use of a word. This is F@#$ing rediculous LOL.
O YES and furthermore, nobody really answered my questions regarding why this is now taking place in RP. I know there were a few follow up answers in regards to the Resorts being built with dirty money, but i dont see the correlation to drug violence. Once again anyone want to elaborate? This time try to answer the real question and not go off on other subjects that are totally irrelevant. Thanks. Love you all.
Joe,
I don't think anyone on this forum can answer that question.....................unless they are directly involved. Everyone can speculate, but to get an absolute 100% truthful answer, I believe, is not going to happen. And who knows, it may be a combination of different things all happening at one time. I do believe that drugs are the root of the problem, and that tree, unfortunately my friends, has many branches. There are so many real questions and so few real answers..............what do you do???????
to post that kind of stuff on a public forum could affect a persons health. I like my fingers and my juevos
This a very wise statement. There are reasons *why* this happened and I mentioned them yesterday - retribution and control. To go any deeper than that on a public forum is to put one's self at risk. There are things that the locals know and accept and things are not always what they seem on the surface. Best left at that.
Oh, I wanted to add - my post yesterday mentioning that the Chief of Police had passed away. I was told later in the day that this was deliberate and the family wanted this to get out and be posted by the news. Given what happened, they didn't want any unexpected visitors at the hospital in Hermisillo to finish the job, as there were with the slaying at Red Cross.
Stuart was referring to CALLE TRECE not the Malecon, but either way Ill have to see scientific evidence that this is actually possible.
I have no idea if it's possible. And yes, it was Calle Trece, not the Malecon. I've eaten there for years and never thought twice about it until a local told me this is why he won't eat there. True or not, who knows, but it made sense to me at the time - heavy rains, sewage overflows, it's got to go somewhere or dry up on the streets.
I must have read more into Joe's post. All I was trying to say is who truly knows why it is now happening in RP could only be the people directly involved. We know the *why* and to go any deeper than that would only be speculation on our part. I was not assuming anyone on here is directly involved..................only that the "answers" he wants would only be speculation.
Something nastier than the food on calle 13 would be eating the clams that come out of cholla bay 1000 septic tanks with nowhere to leach except the bay. I always thought they tasted kind of shitty.
You read it just fine BG, it's near impossible to answer or ask a question when you basicly have no idea what you're talking about.
I was on my way to Mayan Palace on 6-21-10, left Sonoyta around 12:20pm and arrived at Mayan Lakes at 1:45pm I did not see any military checkpoint anywhere in the highway at all, unless they where there after I went by, this morning I left PP at 6:24 am and there was no checkpoint either, I did notice more police patrols in the streets of PP and Sonoyta, but no military presence anywhere yet, I say yet with the hopes that they will arrive soon to help keep it or at least give the population a little more hope in feeling safer!!
As for me I will die sooner or later, may as well do it while doing what I want and in the place I grow to love and for those that do not know it it is Puerto Penasco aka Rocky Point, the only thing I noticed was that the sea was full of jelly fish even thou the water was not that hot!!
The Jellyfish were all over the beach in front of PDO yesterday. We left PP about 7:30 last night and there was no checkpoint on the way out. There weren't any cars either. We got passed by one tricked out pick up going a hundred right before the altars. Drove right up to the border, he asked us if we were American citizens and spent more time playing with the dog than talking to us. I gues 2 old ladies and a big lab aren't too threatening! LOL!
First the shootings, now jellyfish in June!?!? What's next, a surprise election/dry weekend? Guess this is not the best time to take down a first-timer, but looks like we're gonna' do it anyway this weekend. Anything special going on?
Yeah, the blue ones are difficult to see when swimming....I've had the "pleasure" of getting the tentacles wrapped around my ankle...nice welts., fortunately didn't have an allergic reaction.
Just spent over a week down there and never saw any jelly fish in the ocean...we were on sandy beach. Also, never would of known that all the "activity" happened while we were there if I had not read it. Was in town walked around and felt as safe as I always have. Is terrible what happened and especially when things seem to be slowly picking up down there. For me, RP is a place I love to go to, is why we bought there and I hate that I always have to defend a place I love....of course now it will be harder to convince friends and family that it is safe to go there. We will keep going, of course now being more aware of things, but the way I look at it, I could be anywhere and bad things can happen....look at the family that was gunned down in California at a Taco Bell...sadly, crime and violence is everywhere in the world. Seems like anything that happens in RP is blown out of proportion in Arizona and the rumors I hear are crazy. I just read this on a newspaper forum that people were just slamming mexico, mexicans, hispanics...you name it and this person said this "Cars with Arizona license plates are being vandalized in California in the great US of A. Put things in perspective and quit letting fear and prejudice run your life."
~~~ I know ~~~ EXACTLY ~~~ why, but it is SOOOOOO obvious that I'm not going to say, ~~~
To the people that are reporting there aren't military checkpoints on Mexico 8 from Sonoyta to RP, you guys must have the worst reading comprehension ever. Kenny's buddy was saying there was a military checkpoint in the Calle Trece region of RP near the Penasco Del Sol and Pinicate Condos, not on the highway. He never once mentioned checkpoints on the way to RP from Sonoyta.
O yes, also, I was mearly trying to create conversation. I know that there may not be clear cut answers and even if there was I also understand that those answers may not be shared because this is a public forum. I was only trying to get convo started and get people's opinions or thoughts as to why this is happening. It was supposed to be food for thought, you dont have to rip me on it. I was hoping it would be like a symposium forum where people debate on facts or opinions. Just wanted conversation, and I was hoping the RP cheerleaders would get involved but i guess its dead in the water cause nobody wants to speculate. I think speculation is awesome as long as its not interpreted as factual information. Thanks again and I love you all so much.

The person said at the entrance to the Pinacate - which I took to mean as the Biosphere Reserve - not the Pinacate condos down by the Peñasco del Sol. Was I the only person who read it like that?
Not to worry, it's just the nature of the beast..... I think that for whatever reason some group, either big or small, said the hell with this town, we gata do, what we gata do, and it very well could have been two separate incidents, with a common denominator. Or not! LOL
Just spent over a week down there and never saw any jelly fish in the ocean...we were on sandy beach. Also, never would of known that all the "activity" happened while we were there if I had not read it. Was in town walked around and felt as safe as I always have. Is terrible what happened and especially when things seem to be slowly picking up down there. For me, RP is a place I love to go to, is why we bought there and I hate that I always have to defend a place I love....of course now it will be harder to convince friends and family that it is safe to go there. We will keep going, of course now being more aware of things, but the way I look at it, I could be anywhere and bad things can happen....look at the family that was gunned down in California at a Taco Bell...sadly, crime and violence is everywhere in the world. Seems like anything that happens in RP is blown out of proportion in Arizona and the rumors I hear are crazy. I just read this on a newspaper forum that people were just slamming mexico, mexicans, hispanics...you name it and this person said this "Cars with Arizona license plates are being vandalized in California in the great US of A. Put things in perspective and quit letting fear and prejudice run your life."
There is something to be said for being blissfully ignorant. I think a random shooting at a Taco Bell is a slightly less significant event than the ambushing of a Police Chief.
You might recall the national reaction to those 4 officers murdered in that Tacoma coffee shop.
Puerto Penasco has now entered the list of towns besieged by narco-violence, as this current event has loudly announced. If you want things to change, stay home and voice your protest to the Mexican government.
It said,,,,
There is a HUGE Federal Military stop in full operation as I write, 6/21/10 Noonish, close to the entrance to the Pinacate. Fully armed and uniformed military as reported, not Federal or local police. All vehicles are being stopped, people are required to exit the vehicle and it is carefully inspected."
Thing about that is you can go and catch the other highway to the West.
Hello everyone, i've been a lurker on this forum for several months and have really enjoyed reading updates, etc. This is my first posting and i hope to become more active. I own in Las Conchas and go down several times a month if I can. I really enjoy Penasco and am sorry to hear about this recent violence. One thing that no one has mentioned - is it typical for a police chief to be on patrol at 10:30 at night on a Saturday. I figure most police chiefs are at home or out socializing at night and leave patrol to their officers. Perhaps there is more to this story. I obviously didn't know the chief as many of you do so i can't speak to his character or anything but I think its worth thinking about.
