    Bootiful Halloweenie

Been better, been worse. Great weekend so far with a full fishbox today. What's not to love, other than the #%^^*( gas prices right now. Still worth every penny sitting at Sky and watching the sun rise.... and set over Baja. All the years, rolled up into this weekend, wouldn't trade it for...

    Dorado Fishing in October

There are some dorado around, but further out and south. We've had them school up by the boat at the 51 in the fall. Most of them are peanuts. We have had a few good trips in the past, especially if you can find a weedline, but that's usually earlier in June or so. Given all the longlines...

    Nora, Keep Informed

I think back a few years (don't remember the hurricane name), but it stalled on its way up right over San Carlos. Dropped 22" of rain in a little over 24 hours. Nearly flooded San Carlos off the map and wrecked the place.

Rick Hammer's Trick for Rocked Up Groupers

I think he made rebar reef anchors for half the guys in Cholla.

Rod and Reel suggestions for grouper

Was same last weekend. Audi said the forecast was waaaaaaayyyyy off. He went out, but not far. Said most boats were going out and turning around and coming back in within 20 minutes. I used to hate that the most. Plan a trip, forecast/tides look good, get there and it's blown the F out and end...

Rod and Reel suggestions for grouper

A live bonefish draws a wicked lightning fast strike. Ain't no nibble-nibble going on. It's dropped guys on my old boat to their knees, not kidding. Again, it's more the construction of the rod than the rating. The graphite roller rods can't take that kind of hit. A solid Eglass rod can...

Rod and Reel suggestions for grouper

Sealines are not level wind. I don’t own a single level wind reel, other than my electric Daiwa Tanacom Bull. That's for the 51 and deep water. Helps immensely in over 265 ft. Gowdy will do his best to set you up. All depends on what he has in stock. Lord only knows how much Dinero I've given...

Rod and Reel suggestions for grouper

I've had grouper snap 130 lb. roller guide rods like toothpicks. Most of them are carbon fiber/graphite and while okay for fighting big game on the surface, they suck for hoisting anything big up from down below. Go with a solid fiberglass rod with ceramic guides. It has more backbone. My...

Made It to The Big Leagues

Solid advice. Have had a couple scary things happen out there. Shit you just in no way even considered would happen. Nothing worse than that sinking feeling, especially at the 51. The other protip here? Keep a cool head and don't panic. Panic causes really bad decisions. My dear wife would...

Rick Hammer's Trick for Rocked Up Groupers

Call Gowdy down at Phoenix Fishing Supply and see if he has it. He used to stock it, it's where I got my copy years ago. If I can find mine, I'll let you borrow it.

Rick Hammer's Trick for Rocked Up Groupers

Very little written about him that I know of, mostly just word of mouth anecdotes from those that fished with him or knew him around Cholla. He had a lot of Grouper tricks and knew the reefs very well.

Essential Paperwork for Taking Boat Into Mexico

2nd on Vagabundos. Was a member for years. Also 2nd on the TIP. You don’t need it for Rocky Point, only San Carlos and further south. You can get a fishing license in town at city hall. Vagabundos is easier, though. The TIP is not bad to have, though. We got inspected by the Mex Navy one day...

Rick Hammer's Trick for Rocked Up Groupers

No lineage story would be complete without starting with the man that taught so many of them grouper tricks. That man's name was Crazy Charlie.

Going to RP for first time this week!!

I'd second this. Best corvina fishing is cooler weather. Goes for lots of other species, too. Even offshore, the water gets too warm. You can get some grouper on the reefs if you get a decent weather day and can stand the heat.

The Grouper Slayer puts us on the fish!

Grouper is not really good sashimi. Fry it for the bomb. Yellowtail? Yes!!!! Had some last week. Red Snapper? Have done fresh as sashimi and sushi. Have caught a lot of barellita (black skipjack) while Trolling. Good for machaca, not much else. So damned dark and bloody. All the others in...

Super Hot in AZ...and not so hot in Rocky Point?

Depends on size, for one. Most are 13 or 14 inch which means they rotate faster and generate more heat. Load range is the other factor. Nearly all are load range C. Nearly impossible to find a higher load range in the smaller sizes. Lastly, they are constructed differently. I would try to run...

Super Hot in AZ...and not so hot in Rocky Point?

Can't tell you how many boat trailer tires I went through over the years. Often nearly brand new. KA-blooey!

You always hear about the best eating fish in PP but i haven't heard about the ones that you are better left throwing back.

Usually just throw them in bucket. When the corvina run, the action is fast and furious, then the school moves along. I don't waste time messing with the fish. Get'em unhooked and in the bucket ASAP and get back to casting for another. Have literally filled a 5 gal bucket in 10 minutes, then...
