The crime of Samuel Castro Gallardo, occurred last Tuesday night, the town filled with mourning Gulf of Santa Clara and San Luis Rio Colorado, where he was very well known and loved.

Yep I had what I thought at the time was grouper in Gonzaga Bay a few weeks ago but turned out it was actually Totoaba.
We catch them regularly when grouper fishing out of Penasco. We don't target them and try to release them whenever possible, but if you catch them deep, they go belly up and die near immediately. While once uncommon to catch, they are making a terrific comeback and it's difficult NOT to catch one at times. The local fishermen catch them as well, but refer to them as "machorro" not totuava. I believe this reference is from the old days when huge ones were caught right from the beach in San Felipe. "El Machorro" is a towering crest on Punta de San Felipe that you can see all the way from the San Pedro Martir Mountains to the Sea of Cortez.
Part of the solution, as I have said many times in the past, is to offer a special sportfishing permit or stamp for them. You would pay $X and get to keep some set number - 2 or 3 perhaps, that are within a particular slot limit. All money paid for the permit or stamp would be used to fund stocking and reintroduction efforts to restore the species.
The other and perhaps bigger part of the problem (without being prejudice here) is the damned Asians. They will, at some point, be able to pat themselves on the back for single-handedly devouring the majority of the world's sea populations. Dolphins, whales, sea cucumbers, shark fins. If it comes from the ocean, they eat it. And they are willing to pay top dollar to get it. $6000 for a fish bladder? C'mon, we're not talking a cure for cancer here, we're talking a FISH BLADDER. I dunno, pure crazy. As long as there is that kind of money to be made, it's like drugs. People are gonna do it.

Good picture, Kenny. Thanks. Now imagine that same fish at 60-70 lbs. We've hooked a couple that big, one at the Caballo (west of Bird Island). Totally surprised me, but my friend Fernando down in San Carlos has occasionally hooked them up even that far south. They are more numerous and spread farther than most people realize. The other part is also true - they are commonly confused with sea bass. Their color is usually a bit different - more copper colored, while white seabass and large corvina tend to be more silver with purple stripes or highlights. They also tend to be broader shouldered than the white seabass; a stockier thicker fish. However, the truth is in the tail, as mentioned. Totuaba tails curve out, nearly to a triangle, away from the body of the fish. White seabass and large corvina tails curve inward, towards the body of the fish. The tail difference is the single quickest sure-fire way of identification.

Actually since it is the fear of that happening that would stop it just start a phony website with lots of panic, made up reports, with pictures and everything. And not fall off just wither and shrink and turn pink !!
