I drove the Devil's Spine years back, at night from Durango down to Matzatlan. Some of the most beautiful country in all of Mexico with a switchback highway just like the Alps. That road would have hosted an incredible cross country race. The log trucks drove at night because they had to use both lanes to make the switchbacks and could watch for oncoming headlights. Several hours of blap blap blap jake brakes going down the mountain. Driving a rental crapbox out of Torreon did not inspire confidence but the truckers would hit the turn signal when it was safe to pass. It was nuts, steep up on the right and steep down on the left with a narrow road. I was reluctant to pass but my companion assured me it was the way to do it. I was sure we'd go off the edge to a firey death. In retrospect I wish I could make the drive again, with a more interesting vehicle, an old TR3 or even a Miata but the new highway is finished so no more Devils Spine.
