"Is there a new highway planned to bisect the pristine El Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve? It appears that it is at least an idea from photos acquired by Wild Sonora. These maps seem to show a 4-lane separated highway cut-off from Route 2 through the sand dunes just west of Pinacate down to the Route 3 coastal highway. The length from maps appears to be about 50 km and cuts right down the east/west center of the reserve."

Jerry, it seems like there is an existing dirt road already in the area, (satellite view mode on google maps) however it does goes straight to one of the large southerly craters, they might just to a detour of the crater and extended straight south to connect to #3, then again what do I know other than beer tastes better ice cold!!!

Yes, there is an unimproved dirt road connecting to Mex. 2. not too far out of Sonoita. If you start at the north end you will end up exiting past the old visitors center and entrance to the craters on the Sonoita-Penasco highway. I have been on that road in the past.

I had heard that there was to be a road connecting to the Coastal Highway right at Aceves Lopes. There is a recently built building just across the tracks with a road up to it. I have been under the impression that this road would connect to the new Visitors center and through to the Sonoita highway on the existing paved access road. Effectively a by- pass to Penasco. Lagrimis will know more about this.

The Feds have an offer ready for, Ejido Lopez Aceves to by 26,ooo hectares that runs from Hiway 2 to Hiway 3 and they did just build what looks like it will be a new entrance to the park.....Apart from Lopez, they are also buying ejido land next to Lopez, from Ejido Salinas De Gortari......The road was planned a few years ago, to run from just north of Pancho Villa ( which is where the new park office was built to Lpoez.....they say 50 miles on the map, but I think its only 23 miles across.

If campers are interested in the area, in Ejido Salinas de Gortari a campground is being built, supposed to be all Green...Restroom walls, built out of wine bottles and probably solar or wind power. It is about 25 minutes north of Sandy Beach. The name is San Judas after the small bay with the same name. I was out there a couple weeks ago and the gate on the hiway was locked..

Ejido Lopez,by the way, Roberto is the only ejido to actually have titles issued on parcels of land within the nucleus of the reserve......when you drive north between Puerto Penasco and El golfo there are only two properties built on the east side of the RR tracks, one is the old train station in Ejido Lopez Collada and the other is in Ejido Lopez, with papers, the feds issued 42 titles inside and then threatened huge fines to anybody that built..

Interesting that people who buy land in Play Lopez will be some of the few, or maybe the only ones, actually owning part of the Pinacate, correct??

Seems like it Roberto, the feds are going to buy up everything else.....North of Laguna Shores to El Golfo, Lopez is the only land subdivided......Lopez on the ocean is within the Alto Golfo Reserve and inland in the Pinacate. The place was a little paradise until the hiway was built.
