Hi need to know the best way to get to Rocky Point from Michigan, One option would be to fly into Phoenix or Tuscan and rent a car and drive down. However I've heard we would then have to buy Mexican car insurance?
I've also heard you can take a Commuter Plane into Rocky Point from either Phoenix or Tuscan but, then can we rent a car at the airport once we land, availability, types of cars, cost?
Looking for the easiest way to get there and wondering what the expense difference would be? :)

Well, thx for the welcome but that was a typo..?? And yes we plan to rent but, that wasn't my question. Is it better to rent a car after flying in on commuter or fly to Phoenix and drive down?

There is no commuter hop into Penasco at the present time. You can contact Bufalo Rentals in Penasco and they will send a driver up to pick you up at the air port in AZ and bring you here, then rent a car from them for your stay and reverse return. Lots cheaper than renting in the US and driving down.
Bufalo 638-388-9999 I think it's 01-52 for international calls but you should check.

We have rented from Buffalo for a month now and it has worked out great for us. We flew into Phoenix. We are a family of 4 (with 4 suitcases plus carry-ons) . We needed a large enough car to handle it all for the trip down and back, but didn't need as much space when down here when not hauling the suitcases. Buffalo sent a driver to pick us up in Phx in a minivan--it was $70 plus the cost of the minivan for the day (about $100). We got to the office and filled out the paperwork for the duration for a small car--rent for 21days, get the rest of the month free. It's a Nissan Tiida--similar to a Sentra--but perfectly comfortable for our 6-foot son in the back seat. It's about $50/day, all insurances inclusive, renting from Phx would have meant a minivan the whole time at a greater daily rate with no discount. Anyhow, we kept the minivan until the following late morning to bring our luggage to the condo, then drove back into town to make the switch. Since they're next door to Combo Taco, the timing was great! I can't get back to your original post on the ipad, so I'm sorry I don't remember how many are in your group. If you are 3 or less, a small car is perfect for the whole trip. Another added benefit is that you have a person with you who knows the ropes going through the border crossing. We've done it before alone in a car we rented from the Phx airport for a short trip, but it was an added comfort factor. The cost of the driver plus tip plus a food stop plus gas was still way less than a shuttle or renting from Phx. Hope you have a great time!!!

Update to my above comment, now that we're home. The minivan was 1600pesos/day = $120, the Nissan Tiida was 800/day ($60) and 4200/week ($315)

Be SURE to get specific numbers for whatever "deal" they're offering. Our quoted deal was "rent 21 days, get the rest of the month for free". In my experience, people have always used the standard of a 30 day month. Everything is always pro-rated based on 30 days. So, one would logically think that the deal meant PAY for 21 days, get 9 days FREE. Total of 30 days. So much for logic. We were told that since we rented on Feb 4th, 21 days paid brings us to the 25th, and there are only 3 days left in Feb that's all we got for free. WHAT?!?! I countered with "What if we rented on Feb 10th? 21 days would bring us to March 3rd. The "rest of the month for free" would then equal 28 free days." End of story. We got our 9 days.

Don't forget that you're responsible for the gas for the round-trip. On our way back to PHX, we filled up for about $40 and had to give the driver the same so he could add gas in PP and return the car full. 70+80+120=270 plus tip.

Roundtrip--HeadOut to RP charges $600 for 4 vs. $540 for 4 with the minivan ( http://www.headouttorockypoint.com/) The price difference isn't that huge after all. If you have 3 or less in your party, the cost of renting a small car instead would make it a better deal. For 5 or more, Head Out is the way to go. The price goes down to $100 round trip at 7 or more.
