600 miles roundtrip I thought something would happen!

Lovin it in RP!
We made our usual trip to Hermosillo from Peñasco yesterday. We go through Y Griega, Caborca, Alter on a long road through the desert in Mexico. Somehow we got back without indecent, I guess we were just lucky. One of my clients told me she was very nervous about the trip because of the dire USA warnings of the area. She told me on the way back how silly she felt for believing that.

She said no sign of TCO's, or GMO's, or IPAS, not even NRA.

We drove at 6:00 in the morning (the dreaded dark hour) and returned at sunset.

It's a long trip, but the way we did it it was a safe uneventful trip. There is traffic everywhere, there are people going on about their own lives in theses places. They probably don't get FOX news so they don't know the danger. Highway 2 through these areas is the main arterie for truck and bus transport from mainland Mexico to the Baja. Lonely stretch?......not at all.

4.5 hours to Hermosillo, 2 hours at Immigration, 5 hours return trip (Inspection at Quero Babi takes a few minutes)

I can't say it was fun doing 600 miles in one day with clients who may not like to travel as much as I do, I am just saying it is totally doable.

Ok now we are off to Quartzsite, have a great week!

Hey you can believe the man with the van or talk to the guys nearly killed on the same road last Friday as a full out gun battle pinned motorists down on the highway for hours mr. Smug just traveled...glad no one was hurt by your overconfidence....

State Dept. issued travel warning to Agua Prieta before shootout
Just one week before the shooting that killed at least 8 in Agua Prieta, the State Department issued a travel warning specifically naming the area and the eastern border of Sonora.

Many travelers say they weren't aware of the warning. Some believe it isn't a big issue, saying there are problems everywhere.

Here's a look at the alert posted to the State Department website Jan. 9:

Sonora: Nogales, Puerto Peñasco, Hermosillo, and San Carlos are major cities/travel destinations in Sonora - Sonora is a key region in the international drug and human trafficking trades, and can be extremely dangerous for travelers. Travelers throughout Sonora are encouraged to limit travel to main roads during daylight hours. The region west of Nogales, east of Sonoyta, and from Caborca north, including the towns of Saric, Tubutama and Altar, and the eastern edge of Sonora bordering Chihuahua, are known centers of illegal activity and non-essential travel between these cities should be avoided. Travelers should also defer non-essential travel to the eastern edge of the State of Sonora which borders the State of Chihuahua (all points along that border east of the northern city of Agua Prieta and the southern town of Alamos), and defer non-essential travel within the city of Ciudad Obregon and south of the city of Navojoa. You should exercise caution while transiting Vicam in southern Sonora due to a roadblock instituted by local indigenous and environmental groups. In December 2013, a gun battle involving Mexican authorities and TCOs occurred in Puerto Penasco. U.S. citizens visiting Puerto Peñasco should remain vigilant, exercise caution and use the Lukeville, Arizona/Sonoyta, Sonora border crossing, in order to limit driving through Mexico.
Others say more needs to be done to alert travelers of what's going on.

"I'll definitely keep my eyes out. How about you? They're definitely needs to be a better job of getting the word out about that. We're going to have to figure out how safe it is," traveler Jack Rhodes said.

"I appreciate having the information but it would not keep me from going into Mexico. I think when you are traveling anywhere just want to be aware of your surroundings and be smart," he said.

Wow bad news Jerry your such an amazing unbiased news reporter. Thanks for letting us know that some more bad guys were killed in Mexico. Interesting that since you live in AZ you never point out the crime, shootouts and murders that take place in AZ or anywhere in the USA for that matter. You need to let people know to stay out of theaters, bad neighborhoods and schools in the USA... FACT RP is statistically safer than most cities in the USA..

I truly don't get some on here. You have someone who talks about living a happy life and is working to show that Mexico (particularly Penasco) is a great place to visit. We should all envy the guy that skips around loving life (I have seen many a millionaire who would only dream of having such a content and satisfying life). He often comments on specific trips to show that nothing happened on those trips. why? because we have such a stigma that something will go wrong as soon as you set foot in mexico. of course no one believes that nothing negative will happen. no place on earth can claim that. some on here just post every single piece of bad news they can find. Why??? is there someone out there that believes Mexico is 100% immune to bad things happening? I am just amazed at the bitterness that some have. I guess it would be similar to me posting who died on I-17 each week to warn people that the freeway in Phoenix is dangerous. This way they will know that they could die on the freeway and that no one is 100% safe. maybe put a thread about it each week and as soon as someone does die I could come back and say 'see, I told you it would happen'.

there has to be something else out there that should be enjoyable... maybe sex, hiking, fishing, walking. just something to remove the negativity.

This is exactly the sentiment that Jerry shares with us. We should be thankful that we have someone on this forum like Jerry that is so well in touch with the surrounding areas of RP. If this was a public news organization we would call Jerry an Insider. Here on this forum he has to take flack from Benny the salesman and Eric the nobody that came out of left field. If you weren't practicing the same technique that MIKE uses you would understand the above highlighted comment and the same sentiment that Jerry shares. That is, to know one's surroundings. Nobody is telling anyone not to travel throughout Sonora. The gentleman above says, "... but it would NOT keep me from going to Mexico...". Jerry is sharing with us the reality of what happens on a weekly basis in the region so travelers are AWARE of their surroundings. How can you be aware of your surroundings if you dont know what is happening? Once again, this ERIC guy amazes me!

If I need to know information about the region, who do I turn to? ERIC or Jerry?

Safe travels. Thanks Jerry!

Thanks Joe...note all of them were not bad guys. The woman killed by narcos in Penasco last week was not a "bad guy",the fisherman shot in the stupid helicopter gun ship attack was not a "bad guy" ,the 16 year old boy killed east of Caborca on the main highway may have been a hostage, two of the dead in A.P. we're just regular guys.....hey I go pretty much anywhere I feel like it being 62 years old and confident that in a pinch I could walk 50 miles if I were jacked in the middle of nowhere but driving at night in a SUV or van with darkened windows is not the best move to make at this time.It is unprofessional

But I think it's better if there are different viewpoints - even from one extreme to the other. That way we get all the information and the rest of us are free to choose what to do with that information. I'd like to believe that I "think like" a combination of Russ and Jerry. I love Russ' enthusiasm and positive mentality - reading his posts makes me feel excited about traveling, interested, positive, and downright lucky that I've found Peñasco and the surrounding areas. Whereas, on the other hand, Jerry is my dose of reality - he takes our blinders off - so that we're informed. Jerry isn't sitting there hoping and wishing for violence, he's just making sure we all know what's going on. I'd rather have too much information, even if it's about bad things, rather than less information.

Repeating myself but driving anywhere past Penasco or Sonoyta south in the dark is not wise.Gangsters related issues but even more the bad road conditions make this trip dangerous until the highway work is finished. The road from the overpass near Santo Tomas to Y Griega is a deadly one....do a search...

Forced fed medication could help them, I really don't care about the CT and Chapo's stuff on here. you can just read Borderland beat and be in the know, El Debate too, getting your info from a lost translation is not very trustworthy.

You say we should be thankful we have Jerry to keep us informed?? What a laugh. Anybody w/ a brain on this forum sees right thru Jerry & the few others that clearly have an agenda against more people coming to RP because they want RP small the way it was 30 years ago, they don't like the resorts, crowds etc. Their bitter & they will do anything they can to scare anyone new away from their RP.

If Jerry is such the great person who merely looks out for all of our safety then WHY since most of the forum members live in AZ does he not report the shootings, murders, home invasions that take place in AZ on a daily basis?? ANSWER because his agenda is not to keep people out of AZ its to keep people out of RP..ALSO if these people love RP so much then WHY do they NEVER have anything good to say about RP?

I live in RP & we here find it comical that a person who lives in AZ that rarely comes to RP is the apparent guru of knowledge for RP.

Jerry & some here are so desperate to spread bad news for RP they go out of their way to find anything bad anywhere in Mexico to post here.

And half of what Jerry reports is biased half truths that he adds his own spin to. He loves to paste links for stories in Spanish that he hopes you don't translate & read & when you do read them you find that the story is nothing near what he exaggerated it to be. He will pretend & hope you believe that innocent people & tourists are being gunned down daily in RP but the facts show otherwise.

Don't you find it strange that Jerry & a few others post 24/7 nothing but bad news about RP? Go back & read these peoples past posts & you will see their clear agenda. These people have NO life because they are on this forum every day & night posting any bad news they can create. Here's an idea. Get a life and come to RP and like I do everyday here in RP safely boat, fish, kayak, hang out on the beach eat at the restaurants, etc.

Listen Mike, I'm not going to get in a pissing match with you. I've been a member here a long ass time, unlike you with your 28 messages. I've seen the valuable contributions to this forum by both Jerry and Russ. After years of going to RP and having it all be sunshine and mangos on the beach, when you scratch beneath the surface and see what's it's really like you find out you were living in La La Land. HOWEVER, that does not make me love RP any less. I love MY version of RP. Jerry has never said he hates RP or has tried to keep people away. I don't think he exaggerates either. I read Borderland Beat all the time - I want to be informed about what's going on in the place I love so much - not just RP, but Mexico as a whole. If you don't like what Jerry posts, then don't read it. It's as simple as that.

Asking why Jerry doesn't report on all the things that happen in Phoenix is just outright stupidity. First of all, this is an RP forum, not a Phoenix forum. Secondly, don't we get enough of that on the news everyday? There's nothing wrong with people who post only positive things and the same goes for negative news as well. Like I said above, I love Russ' AND Jerry's posts - isn't it better to have too much information and then we all have the individual choice to decide what information we believe, retain, use, respect, or reject??????

Happy Hour Mike? For the record in November I heard from friends in Caborca and my area that trouble was coming toward Sonoyta and Rocky point.I pointed out that fact and started getting push back from local knuckleheads. The helicopter supported gun battle then happened( the truth is still not being told),the police chief is replaced and all is well...right.... So how does correctly warning Americans to take extra care for a while on trips to RP and that they are being lied to by realtor class make me a bad guy? On the homeport the one true fact is it will make owning a house or condo in RP a hassle if they actually do lure a few ships that don't sink in a well timed Northener...The homeport is bad for American owners flat out.

I know this is hard for you to understand being that you are so new here on this forum and dont know anything but Jerry doesn't frequent RP or have a personal vested interest in RP. He does however spend a lot of time in ST. You might wonder what ST is but once again due to the fact that you have absolutely no idea what anything or anyone is on this forum it might be hard for you. Half of what Jerry posts are exactly what he posts. I can assure you that none of the information is a biased half truth. If your head wasnt so far in the sand you would or could start to comprehend this. In a couple of weeks Jerry and I will send you a picture of us doing the exact same thing. Then I'm going to drive into town on my way home and send you a couple more pictures of myself and friends to prove that we're the RP haters you want us to be.

Jesus, you must be hiking those HILLS hard!!! Easy my friend, those opiates can kill you! With moderation my friend. When did Jerry say anything about TOURISTS being gunned down DAILY?????????!!!!!!! LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL What a joke! LAAAAAWWWWWWLLLLLLL

Here's an idea, since you have so much enjoyable free time while living in RP, BRUSH UP ON YOUR ENGLISH. Your SPELLING IS ATROCIOUS!!!!!!!!

Back from Q. Man reading this forum is interesting for sure.

I simply state that I had an uneventful 600 mile trip across the "danger zone" "oh my god , not the danger zone" yes the danger zone......I didn't die, none of my clients weren't injured either.......too bad for some of you huh?

Major crash on I-17 last week left several dead. They were innocent and did not deserve it but it happened. They were on the road and anything can happen. It often does.

In the last year I have had 16 uneventful trips across the "forbidden danger zone" (I wish I could overlay some scary music and maybe Michael Jackson thriller video) , we are so lucky to have made it out alive, I can hardly believe it. "sarc on"

More than 100RV's are heading our way in the next few weeks from Q. If they only listened to some advice on this forum they would not come, however they are coming anyway. First hand knowledge trumps media knowledge anyday.

Oh yeah I can predict the future too.......something bad will happen somewhere in the next few weeks........We live in a corrupt - dangerous world. To say you know stuff is is going to go bad and predict it is like falling out of a tree (you don't have to be smart or connected). What else is new. If you want to live in the negative - by all means grab another and enjoy the cesspool of negativity, I for one will live.....large sometimes and simple other times.

Cruising for whales tomorrow on what is sure to be an ill-fated voyage (some hope) I am optimistic that all will go well and we and our guest will have an awesome time!

Signed Señior Smug (my new adopted name)
