RV'ng in Baja

I know this post should probably be in Off Topic, but I wasn't sure how many people actually read there. So, we are thinking about doing something different this year. The idea just came up last night so we have done absolutely zero research. We would like to rent an RV, Class B or C, just for 2 people, and drive down the Baja Peninsula. I'm not sure where to start finding a rental that lets you take it into Mexico, planning an itinerary, etc. I did check out some of the Baja forums, but one said the registration feature was disabled, and another said the number of allowable registrations for the last 24 hour period had been exceeded. Any suggestions?

You might try posting a question on the RVing in Mexico Yahoo group.

RVing_Mexico : RVing_Mexico

They haven't been very active lately (only 3 posts in 2012), but members get the posts by email so they don't have to be actively checking that forum. When we were first coming to Peñasco a few years ago, I asked several questions and usually got answers pretty quickly.

(I can't help with your question, though since we brought our own RV & didn't rent one.)
Good luck with you research.

Check with Cruise America Mesa. Do not enter Mexico at San Luis, it really isn't safe. A good starting point would be Rocky point to the New Coastal Highway to El Golfo.Spend a day or so in El Golfo but don't expect to do much as theirs not much to do in this sleepy fishing village, once like Rocky Point was before it got big. Next stop San Felipe and next to Ensenada. A must have is the Church book, not a book about churches, Amazon.com: Traveler's Guide to Camping Mexico's Baja: Explore Baja and Puerto Penasco with Your RV or Tent (Traveler's Guide series) (9780982310137): Mike Church, Terri Church: Books

You will need to check because I don't think the rental company will allow you to cross the border.

I also highly recommend the Church book. I didn't mention it earlier since it doesn't address the renting an RV issue.

After you get the book, be sure to check their website for updates.

Ha, El Golfo ! That was my first exploratory excursion in the class B van. I could not find an RV park other than the private one. Well not quite accurate, I mean one that I could get into without getting stuck in the sand. I drove to one and got in up to the hubs, not a good experience. I parked on the tarmac and walked all through the area near the beach to no avail. There were several with parking spots, no facilities but the road in was deep sand. I did not even stay overnight. Was no fun.

That's one of the perks for me going to El Golfo, I have a membership at that private RV park. I don't think their is another swimming pool in the town. The police don't play the tourist games of falsely drumming up traffic violations like in Sonoita or RP for a quick $20. they just keep to themselves. The trucks taking the fishing boats to launch have the right-of-way over everything because their brakes have rusted away from the salt water so they couldn't stop even if they wanted too.

Lovin it in RP!
Here is a link to a site exclusive for Rvers. They have a section on Rving in Mexico. On this site you will learn everything about travel on the Baja by RV. If you have a question post a message and they will answer it pretty quick. I believe you have to register before you use the site Woodalls RV Forum

Story of my life, something about driving in the bay from JJ's boat launch with the 4x4 and slinging mud during low tide. Just a little summer fun.:hateit:
