Banana Boat Injury(s)

For the second time in less then a year a young girl has had to have stitched in the eye area as she was hit by another rider on the Banana Boat. This time required 6 stitches. In each case the vacation was cut short and the family and/or friends headed back to the Phoenix area.

Having been on one ages ago I know the riders (many times having had too much to drink) tell the boat driver to go faster and faster - however when it happens it tends to give Penasco a 'black eye' rather then the riders.

There needs to be rules and regulations for all of the recreational activities on Sandy Beach. There's really not much you can do about this kind of accident happening on the banana boats with the exception of not having the boat purposely throw you off. In regard to the Jet Skis, Im surprised someone hasnt been seriously injured or killed. There needs to be a hundred or so yard buffer zone for swimming and wading marked with a buoy. I've seen a$$holes that clearly have no idea what they're doing come charging in trying to show off and come real close to people swimming and wading. It goes the same for the ATVs and Side by Sides, a majority of people that rent these things have no business being on them. They dont have the motor skills and or technical skills to ride or operate these machines and there's no basic operational training before you're allowed to rent.

I would really love to snorkel off of Sandy Beach at high tide over the rocks - but waaaaay too dangerous because of the jet skis. But I want the people who have made the investment to buy jet skis to earn money while the tourists are here - difficult question. I still love it here!

This issue with the jet skis has been discussed on this forum before. Nobody is suggesting that jet skis shouldn't be rented. Im not suggesting jet skis shouldn't be rented. I'm only saying that they shouldn't be allowed to operate from 100 yards and in. There should be a no-wake zone, a buffer zone to safely allow people to swim and wade in the water. I love riding the jet skis as much as anyone but I also exercise caution and respect the people swimming. If you think its bad now, wait till SEMANA SANTA!

I go to Nassau, Bahamas every year and part of the time we stay at the "Atlantis" on Paradise Island. They rent a ton of jet skis there but they give the renters specific instructions as to where they can ride and about how far out you can go. They also will ride over to you and tell you if you nare out of control or breaking the rule. Very similar to the "Cable Beach" area as well in front of the Crystal Palace Casino.

Wow, Mexico Joe and I agree! I can't believe how close jet skis come when I'm out swimming in the water. Usually I'll cut my swim short rather than risk my life. I don't understand it- there are MILES of water out there, so why do they have to go so close to shore ruining it for us swimmers. I like jet skis also, but go strait out rather than hugging the coast.

They do it to show off, no other reason.
They do it because most of them have probably never been on a jetski before and have no idea what they are doing or how to safely operate one. And with no enforcement of any sort, who's to tell them different? Pull the same kind of nonsense at a local lake here in the Phoenix area (speeding through a swim or no wake zone) and you'll find yourself bitch-slapped with a healthy fine and having to attend a mandatory Boater's Ed class -- first time on one or not.

Add to that they're probably drunk before they even get on the damn thing.

They do it to show off, people ages 12 - 16, and above, have common sense, these renters, operators, wouldn't run across a freeway, they wouldn't ride their skateboards across a freeway, why ? because common sense kicks in, even with a boaters ED class they will buzz the beaches, they do it to show off, you are correct, on US lakes and rivers they get a healthy fine,

A number of years ago, myself and some buddies, two brothers were on some rented jet skis out of Cholla Bay. The guy renting the jet skis gave us a 5 minute talk on what not to do before being allowed out. Well, wouldn't you know it, my one buddy is just in his own world and so he went out and did exactly what the guy just 20 minutes previous told us not to do. Crashed into his brother almost breaking his leg and his brother plays Pro Basketball in Spain, so almost hurt his brother bad and not to mention cracked some of the fiberglass on the SKI. SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST MORONS PERIOD!!!! I mean you cant call it any other way!
