Increase in auto liability limits?

I received this information as a tip from a friend, I can't verify the accuracy:

I renewed my yearly policy with ProAlliance yesterday and Pady advised me of the increase.
Approx a $43 increase.

Thanks, Sunshine. I'm sorry about the increase in cost. The law doesn't require you to buy the higher amount, but to not have it is tantamount to being uninsured if someone should die and you were found to be at fault in any way. All of our insurance providers are automatically honoring the new limits for everyone who has a current policy at no additional cost. Next renewal, you'll have to consider raising the amount of liability coverage to at least $300,000.

By the way, Jim LaBelle, who is quoted in the article is one of my insurance providers.
