Driving Around Penasco

For those of you who worry about driving around Penasco I've got the following warning. It will ALWAYS take you longer then you think it will. Had three objects today when we started out. Pick up my renewal card at the INM office, get cat food and litter, and actually pick up a few things we like to eat.

Love going to the INM office - they are really welcoming and major helpful. Of course we now know some of the staff and it is great fun talking to them in our limited Spanish (I really, really need to do more studying). So leaving there we have big smiles on our faces.

Then it is off to CS for some of their special treats that we love. Both Carlos and Michelle are there today. With Carlos' help we end up buying a lot more of the goodies then intended - but we should be used to that by now as it always happens. If we don't find something while rooting around the freezers Carlos doesn't mind bringing it to our attention. This time we ran into our friend Luca ( Pane e Vino and Azul Bar) so had fun catching up with him. Leaving there we had even bigger smiles on our faces, if a lighter pocketbook.

Super Ley had El Gato food but no litter. Litter has been tabled for another day. That won't be a quick trip either as I'm sure we will run into someone during our travels around town.

Did we, at any time, feel unsafe? Not in the least. Did we have a lot of people smile, wave, wish us well? Lots! Did we enjoy our morning? You betcha!

My feelings exactly. The only problems I had driving around were the pot holes.

I ended up in a joke telling session with the servers last Wednesday night at Capones, great laughs all around. The kids there are great.

The soldier that checked out our car yesterday at the roundabout was mostly smiles and a few laughs. We even gave them some
water. They didn't speak English and we don't speak Spanish, but there were still some good laughs. They really made fun of my
filthy car. By the way, that was the only Mexico check point yesterday morning. Sonoyta clean and grean. No stops, no radar.

I have learned, you give them a smile, they will return it with even more.

I love this thread. These are always the experiences I have while in RP. My last trip was a 2-day quickie at the beginning of August with a first-timer. She was scared to death. She couldn't believe how comfortable I was driving around town to all my favorite places to pick up provisions for the short weekend. Couldn't believe how people actually remembered me and told me to tell my husband they said Hi. On the drive home she told me she'd never seen me so happy, relaxed, friendly and outgoing as I was in RP.

Each day I get closer and closer to asking my employer if I can work via the internet from RP. I think I'm afraid of being told "no" and having my dream crushed!

El Gato - Thanks for this thread!!!!

I drove my pickup to the Bodega, they have a realy nice Malbec wine for areally good price, for here at least. $75 pesos. As I pulled in to park a metal shield covering the underside of the radiator dropped in the back and stayed attached in the front and I was over the parking bumper. I tried to back up but al the screeching stopped me. I got out, laid down on the asphalt and crawled under the truck, jerked, pulled, cussed at the rather stiff and large piece of metal. Soon a head appeared along the side and a gent reached under and started pulling and jerking at the thing as well. I got a hammer out of the truck, he took it from me and crawled back down there and wailed on the thing till it popped loose. WOW ' Muchas, muchas gracias senor ! "De nada" and off he went into the store with a smile on his face.

If that happened in Phoenix, the person walking by would probably point and laugh - not help.

... last week had to drop off some paper work at the court house... happily I found an empty spot to side park. As I went to drop coins in the meter, found myself with out any coins. $hit. Go to the parking lot and pay the 8Bucks or Risk the scooter lady for $65. As I cursed and circled the meter showing my displeasure, some guy walking along, said "Here" and plucked .75 cents into the meter.

He Smiled and said 'this is Phoenix' pay it forward. Man, I love Phoenix.
It makes me happy that someone did that for you, but you have to admit that is the exception, not the rule.

Actually, I've found people to be extremely nice & helpful wherever I've been. Even one time lost in the 'combat zone' in Boston & in a really bad area of Mexico City late at night. According to my family I tend to get lost a lot. One thing with being lost is you generally get to meet a lot of new people and see unexpected sights.

But if I were going to be lost I'd rather be lost in Penasco then anywhere else.

My mom always said "A wrong turn is just another opportunity for adventure". She and I had some GREAT adventures!

Great quote as there are no wrong turns in Penasco! As a person who drives lots of folks around for their first time I love hearing from them what a great little town it is, much more diverse than they had originally thought!
