I had a chance at the last minute to go down this weekend. I took my sister (an RP veteran) and a friend (who is also a co-worker and an RP virgin). Just to give you a little background, my friend is Mexican American, speaks Spanish, and has family in El Paso and years ago spent a lot of time in Juarez before it got bad. Friend's husband was petrified for her to go - always has been, but after the recent news it was even worse.
So, I put on my Rosie/Russ hat, and my imaginary name tag from the RP Convention and Visitor's Center, and tried to show her just how wrong the news is and how beautiful RP really is.
She loved the drive down - Organ Pipe, Pinacate, etc. Loved the Sonoran Sea, was overwhelmed by the beautiful view and how nice the condos were.
We arrived on Friday afternoon and once we dropped off our stuff we went out for supplies. She was extremely nervous at Super Ley, the Corona agencia and Pollo Lucas. There's a really good burro place right next to the Oxxo on No Reeleccion. Finally came off the beach once it was dark and she was scared to leave the condo so my sister and I went out to pick up the burros.
Of course, we had no problems all weekend and as usual, people couldn't have been nicer. In the end, even though she said she loved the condos and the beach, she said she'd never go back. She thinks it too risky being out in town. Oh yeah, I forgot to add, she grew up in South Phoenix.
Some people just prefer to stick their heads in the sand and live in fear. I did my part with her and I'm glad I tried. I won't stop telling people how safe, fun, and beautiful RP is. I love all parts of Mexico and I always will - warts and all. It just makes me sad how even when something is right in front of someone's face they still don't see it sometimes.
