Around town.

Just a few observations from a guy on the ground every day who cannot be identified because he is not authorized to talk about it. Your results may differ.

Capones is the most successful joint in the Mirador. Unfortunately the Mirador continues to be dead. I don't think Spring Break will be much of anything for the Mirador. If it is it will be nothing like the 'good old days" of closed streets and wall to wall people. Penasco continues to change. Owner of Fiesta Cortez told me he was full all last Spring Break, he's bringing in busses from surrounding cities, hope he can duplicate that this year. He's an interesting guy and made me an offer I had to refuse.

Playa de Oro is packed because a club group of live in RVers has arrived. Good for business but it does not represent a permanent increase in business. The hotels in the Mirador have empty parking lots and no lights on in the rooms at night. A guy I know was in Hooters last Sat and he was the ONLY person in there. Mid week on Sandy Beach is dead and Las Conchas is a ghost town most of the time. Spring season is starting and things will pick up some, Jan and Feb are slooow months.

Latitude and Brians continue to soldier on keeping the doors open. Brians, family restaurant with Max's and the Sonoran Grill, does well with locals and visitors. The Sonoran Grill does well when there are folk at the Sonoran complex but dead during the week.

If you want late night action, after hours till 5 or 6 AM, go to Revolution in the Senorial Motel complex on Calle 13. It gets the late night action when the topless clubs close and the street workers want to relax. The owner, Dan is a nut!

For an evening out, diner and drinks can't beat Max's at the end of Calle 13. Good atmosphere, good service, good food and drinks. Popular with locals as well as visitors.

Panne Y Vino did not move to Sandy Beach, thank the good Buddha ! Micky the new Iron Chef has reopened on Fremont in his old location, don't know how well he is doing. Don Julio's is still open awaiting the opening of the casino in that location. A friend has taken over Reggies 8/12 despite the new Oxxo down the street. Still the best burritos around and now tasty Waffles !! There is a German guy on Nuevo Leon right at Fremont who is making and selling German Brauts on most weekends.

The lot next to Del Sol is hosting the Carnival with rides and booths open already. Take the newly pave road off Calle 13 toward the Navy base for parking. Parades for Carnival start soon, I'll try to post some photos. Love the costumes, huge amount of work there.

Goose laid the golden egg so dinner out for me tonight !!

Hear ya Roberto. Stayed at Playa Inn a few weeks back. We were the only ones. Pool was empty, it was an absolute ghost town with a skeleton crew at best. Waited for hot water forever. BUT... my cats were still there! Lorena (forever) and the Siamese John Wayne Bobbitt. Both spent the night with me, curled up and warm in bed. And of course, they love this gringo because he brought canned cat food for them. And pizza. And fish. I have but to walk into the place and call "Kitties!" and they come running. Some things never change.

Capones was the ONLY thing on the Mirador and they did not disappoint. Cooked up our fresh white seabass... very yummy! But you know, I prefer the place when it's a ghost town. A couple weeks, and Spring Break will be in full swing and all that changes. It always does.

The Playa is under new ownership and it's not a hotel any longer. It's a lavandaria !! They had all the visiting state and federal police there when your Gov. was here but the parking lot is empty most days.

I sure did not see anything big going on for Spring Break the last 2 years. Anyone wanting to come down but worried about the crowds, come on down as it's only as busy as a regular busy weekend. More families than college kids now, probably better in some ways. Now Semana Santa is a different story, it's been mobbed, but loads of fun if you like the crowds. Las Conchas is pretty much unconscious most of the time now so if you stay out there it will be quiet.

Hey, Roberto speaking of around town, any truth to the rumor that the city is going to saw my house in half, because its built in the middle of a road? This sounds like it could get fun and funny. Only in Penasco.
