Looks like a hopeless cause. Apparently the virus was downloaded when someone opened an e-mail. It's Baaaad, trashed everything and maybe can't be removed. I have always believed you had to do more than just open an e-mail to get a virus? Is this possible to happen just from opening an e-mail??

Yes there was an anti virus program which identified it as a virus but was helpless to stop it.

MOST viruses attack when you open an attachment to an e-mail. I have heard of some viruses attaching from a web page, but have never encountered that threat.

Is it the blue screen of death you are seeing? Did you try to reboot in safe mode? There is an excellent program call Malware Bytes that can sometimes clean it out but
it sounds like yours is pretty far gone. Did you have any backup? For my business stuff I use two backups. An external hard drive and an online service called Carbonite.
I have them set for auto-backup of specific files every night. Now that I am becoming more and more retarded, I will make it bi-weekly. One thing about the external hard
drive is you can make a mirror image of your system and if the main drive is shot there is a way to use the hard drive as your main drive.

As a last resort, there are some nerds out there that can dimantle your hard drive and try to squeeze the info out of it. Man I feel for you on this one. It really ticks one off when
that happens.

Well, that's the odd part to me. The story is that the e-mail was only opened, no attachments opened. Ramses, the modern day Macgiver has the tower. There is a backup system but, blah, blah, blah. I'm trying to help without making it MY problem !! Hard heads involved !!

I had a virus once and did a system restore to the previous day and it fixed it. It was a UPS can't deliver attachment I opened. I was also waiting on a UPS package at the same time.

Tried that immediatly, NO SOAP! The virus must have blocked it or had already zapped the restore files.

Just Sayin.....Heard, only rumor though, no personal, experience that some <WASHMYMOUTHOUTWITHSOAP> sites carry viruses.

There are a bunch of virus' out there that disable your system restore, which essentially deletes any restore points....had that happen a couple of years ago on my daughter's computer....

There is a program out there...hijackthis...it's a freebie....that lets you see everything that is loading at startup....you can delete/disable individual items...and even those items that won't let it delete them can be marked, and when you reboot, it zaps them before they load.

It depends. If you do not have the feature enabled that allows you to view .html images in your e-mail, you should be safe. Most of the time you actually have to open the attachment or click on links in the e-mail in order to activate the virus. Never open or click on suspicious attachments and URLs and always maintain your antivirus and anti-spyware software up-to-date, alsof a certain stoplight smashin codger sends you a link to look at his new Ukrainian wife don't open it.

Joe, do you know for a fact that a virus can be downloaded by simply opening an e-mail?
What jerry said....particularly that last part....I'm pretty careful on where I go on the web...but ran a Full scan last weekend...and had 4 Trojans my anti virus found...was starting to have problems with both browsers I use...that was the reason for my scan.....there are a couple spyware/virus programs that have free versions I also run occasionally...they sometimes pick up stuff programs like Nortons don't
