EDL passport

This new Enhanced Drivers License is working well in Washington State were I come from. Many folks go back and forth to Canada. My brother just got one while renewing his driver license and it cost 15 bucks..

Can someone explain why brewer blocked its use here in Arizona ? I don't get it ????

Seems to me this would be a good deal for Arizona folks too travel back and forth to Mexico !

Its good for land or sea Mexico Canada and cruise ship travels......Not airline international travel.

You can always get a passport card for $30, which does the same thing.

Is there a advantage of one over the other ? I am just trying to understand why brewer blocked the EDL ? Politics perhaps ! It doesn't need to make sense if its politics right ! LOL

however if we could re-new or upgrade our drivers license to an EDL will mean one less card to carry, specially for those that go across the border 4 or 5 times a week, and yes I wonder by Brewer stop that drivers license in AZ. too

I don't know why it's blocked (possibly it would require $ to implement and there is the other option), but the passport card is recognized in Mexico and perhaps a "Enhanced" driver's license might not be recognized in other countries? Just a guess. But like the EDL, it's only good for crossing in a car to Mexico or Canada or a cruise in the Caribbean.

Hey Tom...a question on the EDL....since WA is one of 2 states that issues a drivers license to illegals (OK...I'm not politically correct!!!)....is there a difference between a regular drivers license and the EDL in that state????

That's a good question Joe..I am trying to figure out why Washington State is one of the last possible states a person can get a DL without proving citizenship and the most proactive to implement the new EDL which requires proof of citizenship the same as a passport does. I can only guess its politics and a few people in state government hanging on to accommodate cheap labor in the states agriculture industry etc.

So now that we are looking at the reasons why ? Why is Brewer the first to trying to pass laws SB 1070 that requires proof on US citizenship and willing to take on the Federal Government in the highest courts in the land but refuses to allow a ID system that proves we are US citizens with our drivers license (EDL) in Arizona ????

Its amazing sometimes how big business and politics is behind many of these deals !!!!! I watch lately how the Arab world is raising to over throw corruption in their governments and willing to die for change and wonder if we Americans have lost our spirit and become sheep !!!!

While were on the subject of what the heck is going on with ID etc. a person can't help ask what the long term damage and control big business and government will have on us with RFID technology. Those transmitters chips the size of a grain of sand in our passports, drivers licenses, credit cards etc. Holy crap !!! This subject can open a BIG can of worms and I think I supposed to conform and say baaaah baaah baaah like a good sheep does and not ask such questions !!!!!

Do you have a metal folder you put your EDL in? For the passport card, they give you the metal encased holder (paper outside). Supposedly you can't read the RFID when it's in the holder.

I've seen numbers of anywhere from 10 ft. 40 ft. for the "trackable" range of an RFID chip. Don't know what the reliability is at 40 ft.

Tom....maybe we'll may be implanting every baby with one when they are born....think about that!!!:stir:

What a lot of people aren't aware of, and should be worried about is the new credit cards/atm cards with the RFID. Someone can take a scanner, and just swipe near you and get all of the info on your card! Check your cards for this symbol.....

I just had 4 surgeries a few months ago and now I swear I hear scanners beeping as I pass by them in stores and government buildings. :think::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::-o

I will have to ask my brother if they gave him a metal/paper type case with his new EDL up there in Washington State and get back to you Miramar. Very good point and I guess its were people go and how safe they want to be to have some kind of protection products for there passport and RFID pass card or credit/debit cards. What is even more worrisome than that video is that credit card companies do not seem to care to much about the security, maybe because there is an insurance company paying for those loses and they, credit cards co., will get their money anyway!!

MIRAMAR, Yes the Washington State Enhanced Drivers License comes with a special cover to keep the License in. The instructions state to keep the card in this protective cover for increased security.

This is a joint US Government (pass port card) and Washington State project (drivers License) combined into one card...... To me there seems to be no difference in the RFID chip security in this card then there is in a credit card with a chip. I have a Visa card from Chase bank that came with zero warnings and has the symbol on it showings its got the RFID chip in it.. Inkaroads seems to have captured the possible reality that credit card companies don't seem to care to much.....

Maybe this is no big deal to some BUT to me it is as I clearly remember while trying to check out of my hotel in Southeast Asia several years ago and my credit card was frozen because of possible fraud charges. There soon was a hotel guard and a local police men on both sides of me while I tried to call my USA bank and fix the problem but it was the middle of the night in USA and no luck contacting my bank. It became clear I would be detained till the 325 dollar hotel bill was paid. Detained ? sounds like night mire jail in a third world country to me !!!!!

Lucky for me I had listen to a seasoned traveler, A America friend and had 5 $100 bills hidden on me for emergencies such as this. BUT wait what if my Passport somehow got stolen or invalid through RFID too ? That's not to cool dude in a far away land to have happen....

The square symbol shows I have RFID chip on my passport. :think:I can even feel the chip with my fingers !

Well I think I beat this subject to death.... LOL :ham: cheers :coldone:

RFID chips are only on the passport cards, not passport booklets.:deadhorse:

The new e-passports booklets came out around 2007. If you have received a passport booklet in the last 4 or so years then look at the front cover to see if there is a symbol on the bottom center like this

and if so you do indeed have a RFID chip in your passport booklet.... :shock:...:think: Google RFID USA passports or click here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E-passport

Yes...the newer passports also have an rfid chip as Tom indicated.....but what I don't understand is why you can use the "automatic" lane with the passport when you can with the passport card????

I thought about that too Joe but so far can't find a clear answer. I thought a chip is a chip is a chip right ? So if I have RFID chip in my passport which I do then whats up with not being able to use the express lanes crossing the border ? I also found on the last page of my passport it says "sensitive electronics" in this passport ! Here is a article but somehow I might have missed the deal is "why" I can't use my passport booklet in the fast lanes ! it just says the scanners cant read booklets only cards... That chip, if indeed is RFID, for whatever reason is not readable from 10 to 15 feet away as in the cards. Per http://www.getyouhome.gov/html/rfid/RFID.html :
