What's interesting is that with your own words you're supporting the rampant corruption narrative. You said earlier that whenever you drive through town you go nice and slow while others are riding your ass. Some of those folks behind you are locals. They're tailgating you because they know that it's not them the cops are targeting. If they can speed with impunity because the cops are targeting out-of-towners that's sorta textbook corruption. Locals zooming around is a recurring theme in a lot of the stories here. It happens in the States too but based on the anecdotal evidence from this community, it's a significant issue in Sonoyta.

Again you can trust in people or you can go through life the much sadder route.

Incorrect. Read my posts. I have explicitly stated there certainly are corrupt Mexican cops. There are corrupt American cops. There is corruption EVERYWHERE. To deny that is to deny reality. The problem is most people on these boards have no problem breaking traffic laws but get enraged when caught. Then the narrative shifts to 'all cops are corrupt'. They are all on the take etc. Consider foreigners speeding thru your town, endangering everyone. You would want and expect the police to try and curb that behavior. It is not different in Sonoyta or Mayberry USA.
P.S. The reason most locals get away with breaking traffic laws is the system is set up with a cash punishment. Most locals don't have a pot to piss in so the cops don't waste their time.

That's fair. The only point I'd disagree with you on is that in Mayberry (I've been through many a town) the cops target you as an out of towner for speeding but the chances they say you didn't legally stop at a stop sign when you know you did are slim to none. I'm guessing the chances are materially higher in Sonoyta based on the testimonials here.

So to clarify your typical refrain again, it's "when you come to Sonoyta slow down, enjoy life, be considerate....but you might still get busted by lying ass policia because everyone in town is piss poor."

No, there were 3 other cars pulled over who obeyed every law perfectly, and sill got the corrupt shake down.

They were only 2 cops on patrol, so he got lucky and was able to get thru without becoming a corruption statistic himself.

"We came back yesterday with no problems. We were searched going into MX but not on our return.
We gassed up in Why and met a resident of Sonyota who warned us of the Police Corruption in Sonoyta.
Wear your masks at all times in the vehicles while driving in town.
Do not stop and shop in Sonoyta.
Do not speed, there is no wiggle room. The posted speed is the posted speed in KPH. They will ticket for ANYTHING over the posted speed.
Stop at all ALTOS, even if they don't look real or are hand painted.
They target US plated cars. He said they leave residents alone. Each officer has to pay the Mayor $300 cash for using the squad car for his shift. So the police are collecting money to pay and line their pockets."

Our 3 - 20-26 year old kids came down, they got the red light, got a quick search including the engine compartment.
Other than that easy peasy, did the 23 mph crawl and 3-5 count at the stop signs.
I guess our family has the lucky look about us.

We got stopped at a “checkpoint” on March 19, 2021, and the corrupt pos cop tried to get us for no seatbelts but we all had them on. He then said we had to have our masks on ALL THE TIME, even while driving. He asked my husband for license and registration. He gave it to him and the pos cop said we had to give him 1000 pesos ($100) or he would keep license and registration. After husband tried to reason with pos cop, I offered him $60... he said $80...I said, I only have $60. He took it and let us go.
Unbelievably corrupt!!
Next time, I will break in to a fit of nagging rage until pos cop can’t take it anymore and let’s us go out sympathy for my husband...lol!

And you KNOW the other 3 cars obeyed every law perfectly? Do you even read what you write? Credibility=Zero.

Follow-up report, our 4 kids came down in 2 different cars and on different days, zero issues both directions, all did the 23mph crawl.
The 3 younger ones went home today and just showed their passports without even a question about what they were bringing back.
Again super easy.

I went through at 8 am today heading north. Approaching town I was by myself. So I pulled over 10 km outside and waited until a convoy of cars traveling 80 mph passed me. I pulled in behind them. Immediately before the hill with the 40 kph sign at top they all slowed down to 20 mph and crested the hill. I then crested it at 20 mph, last in line and concerned they might pick me off. Fortunately, at that moment a large pickup crested behind me, obviously slowing but still well over 25 mph at the moment it crossed the plane of the sign. I watched the cop point the radar gun at it while the driver and passenger winced in my rear view. We went went pass the cop as he lit up and pulled in behind the truck. At the moment the cop pulled out, a second cop car advanced to take his place, like taxis at the airport awaiting their turn.

Went down Friday through Lukeville, took the route across the big wash to Corregidora Street coming out to Highway 2 near the Oxxo and got through with no problems. Returned Monday taking the same route in reverse, again no problems. Crawled slowly under 25 mph the whole way. Saw one car pulled over near the west edge of town.

We drove back today, entered Sonoyta at 3PM, we saw one police car on the east side of the road about 5 blocks from the border.
Pretty quiet, absent were the usual group looking to wash your windows and the people on crutches and in wheel chairs looking for $$.
There was an official Red cross collection station at the south end of town. that's the 1st time I have seen them set-up in a long time.
We did the usual 23 mph crawl with no issues.

I drove back north yesterday and went through at about 8. For maybe the first time I saw no traps and no one pulled over. I saw two nice state police cars pulling into a parking lot and a decrepit local car driving around on some task.

I have read here and on Facebook of people saying they would just drive away and leave their license with the police. Has anyone actually done this? I'm not certain why people feel the police won't chase them down and things would get worse.

Joan C can't believe her ears!!! You don't say, the mayor is in on the taking?! That's pry the first time that's ever happened in Mexico... damn, I guess the country is going to hell in a hand basket.

I like how not one person commented on that fact. Convenient how QUEEN didn't comment on that small relevant information. Because it doesn't fit the narrative. I mean, why would the mayor be paid $300 per use of the car to enforce laws that they're already paid to enforce????

INCENTIVE changes PSYCHOLOGY. Psychology changes behavior... Do we really need to explain nuance of the world to Queen and the goody goodies??? Next, I'll have to explain why marijuana is safe and it's actually alcohol they've been lied to and mislead about all of THERE (their) lives...
