Western Tanagers & other birds

Have a Western Tanager recovering on our deck - dazed from flying into the window. Read where they were suppose to be breeding in the forests in the North. Have noticed a flock of them on walks recently.

Seems like in the early days we only saw "sea" birds and "desert" birds - i.e. sea gulls, hawks, vultures, etc. but now are seeing a lot of song birds. I'm guessing either they have started coming here because of the new plantings - or my memory is really bad and they were here all along.

Alway seems like I read recently where people are now coming to Penasco for the "bird watching" - is this true?

What birds have you guys seen that are maybe new to the area?

I love the owls...I've spotted 4 kinds at my place at Santo Tomas.Having a living Ocotillo fence we get a lot of hummingbirds etc. There is a copper colored one that I don't see in Arizona that is unreal!

Our neighbor under us has a hummingbird feeder and so we get to see them all the time - hummingbirds are my favorite I think - love the owls too. A week and a half ago our son (visiting from St Louis area) started yelling for the family to come see an Ospray holding a BIG fish under it's belly - the fish was longer then he was and he was holding it almost like a torpodo on a plane. Kept circling around us - either giving the fish a tour or showing off his catch for us, lol. Son had actually gotten to see him dive for the fish. He said Penasco hadn't really changed - and he hadn't changed from the kid who used to have his "adventures" with his sibs and friends starting at the break of day (listening to his stories I'm glad I didn't know all they were up to - seeking coral snakes, diving off shrimp boat masts in the harbor, etc.). Penasco is still a place of wonder.

My hacienda in the Mirador probably sports the largest selection of birds in the area. With 25+ palms and 30+ bougainvilla, cacti etc. water all the time and of course Scooter's dog food, shelter from the winds and lots of nesting sites it's a sanctuary. I can't tell you all the different types, hummingbirds always of course, there is now a large flock of Gambol Quail foraging around the garden and roosting in the Bouganivilla. Male Shante, a relative of the catbird, with over 60 different songs, visit annually calling for females. Evenings you are treated to the coo coo of mourning doves. Trimming the palms recently uncovered multiple old hummingbird nests strategically placed up under the dead hanging fronds for protection. One day I noticed a rather larger bird perched on a palm, with the tell tale stationary body and swiveling head. It made a swooping pass but I don't think it was successful. If I still had a bird book I could report more but that's all I know.

As well as the birds a small rabbit visits frequently and Mediterranian Geckos are common. Oh yeah, I guess I sould mention this all could be yours and I could be heading to Oaxaca, I've got it for sale !! Take a look here: (Thanks to Playa !!)
