A lot of steel fabricators use Mexico, China etc for steel detailing... cheap cheap and you get what you pay for. Seen it before.

Steel Detailing is creating production drawings of structural steel members used in building. They show what methods are used to join the steel I-beams pieces together. For instance they will show how to prepare the surfaces and what type and size of weld to apply. I did this for years.

Does the detailer spec. the engineering or illustrate the engineering or ??? Any idea why one would choose to put such a business in Mexico? What would the advantages be? Labor costs? Sounds pretty technical but if it's all paperwork, so to say, it could be done anywhere in the world.

Roberto We thought about moving a few machines down to Rocky Point for the convience of location. We have customers in Chihuahua as well as Tiaujana. Plus it is only 3 hours from home is I was to drive and 40 minutes if we fly. The customers like the idea from the standpoint of logistics and import/export paperwork. I like the idea because material for us is less expensive in Mexico.

I do recall you mentioning that. Be nice if the Mex. govt would make such ventures easy, create a few decent jobs. And the best part would be you would increase your beach time !!

The detailer only draws what the engineers wants. Its fairly simple with the new software that is available. Solidworks or Autodesk Inventor. In would not cost much to set up shop in Rocky Point. I can do it with my laptop and a plotter. Labor has to be the reason.

Heck, I was thinking about expanding my HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) business to RP, doing installs in new homes and replacing old units.
I dont know if it would be profitable or not?

Being a steel fabricator for many years we did the old way with a pencil and a 24x36 sheet of paper. I remember a job in LA that was being drawn on software and they missed one floor. HA, not us. 10 stories and miss a floor.
