Guess She's Too Busy For Us!

I just came from the Malecon. They are pouring concrete as we speak. 1/2 the road going in first. I saw the mayor walking through too. He doesn't seem too worried about his safety. He had a couple suits walking with him but I walked right up and said Hi.

... i think Rocky Point is becoming a non issue as a tourist destination. The shootings are between Mexicans and not tourists. How many dead bodies have been reported found and not a word in the US press. It is locals or cartel members fighting for turf and not a tourist matter.

How many US tourists where lining the streets watching these parades? This is a local matter and as such stays a local story. If ever a Condo owner or Condo visitor get killed that is when all #ell will break lose.

Just a comment on not seeing anything in the Phoenix news media on the shooting....almost a week later. Does anyone believe that they are not aware of the situation.....regardless of how incompetent the Republic or some of the news stations are? I don't usually espouse most "conspiracy" theories....but is it just possible that the media is waiting for the last possible moment to break the news...
so that there is no possible response
.....and the result being the killing of spring break and what little remains of the local economy????
And just what kind of response can there be that would make a difference Joe? The same old comparisons of violence between Tucson/Phoenix, and PP? That it's just some locals fighting over turf, drug money, etc? Most people have made up their minds about the situation already, and a last minute story is not going to change the minds of rational thinking people. Now some on this forum might not think I'm a rational thinking person, but I just renewed my yearly insurance with Rosie this week, and I should be coming down Sunday.... Unless Russ talks me out of it!

Stuart and gang,

I miss you guys too. I'm too busy for you like I'm sometimes too busy to sleep enough or eat on time, but that doesn't diminish how important this forum is to me and how much I love (most of) you guys, so don't go giving up my seat at the dinner table, Stuart. The time right before Spring Break is traditionally extra-busy for me. This year even more so because I'd had so many setbacks in recent months (personal upheavals, illness, RPNO problems, etc.) I'm happy to report that I'm feeling better and things are reaching a more normal balance, but it's left me trying to catch up with all I need to do.

Now, about that interview. A guy calls me up and asks me how I see Spring Break this year and I tell him. That's it. Online insurance sales are brisk with short-term policies, so I know that at least some kids are coming down. Either there will be more of them than last year, or more of them are buying their insurance from me.

Yesterday a hoax email made the rounds here saying that the Consulate had warned students not to come to RP. The email didn't seem authentic to me so I contacted the Consulate and found out that it was a hoax. Your guess is as good as mine as to why the mess on Calle 13 didn't make the U.S. news.

FoxNews did try to throw dirt on RP by taking an interview I gave to KOLD and clipping it to suit their needs. Other than that, the negativity has been noticeably absent.

Can anyone tell me why in the world you would wait so long and right up until Spring Break to finish the Malecon?! Basically pissing away any of what little business there is by not having the Malecon all finished looking good with a fresh look and new paved street with vendors having everything set up. Thats ridiculous, I mean good god do these people understand anything?! It will be done and looking good for Semana Santa Im sure for all those Mexicans with deep wallets !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BUT NOT SPRING BREAK, some ASU kid looking to burn a hole in his or her pocket cant even do so because the malecon is under construction..... hhhhmmmmmm yea that sounds like a good idea, trading up american money for pesos! Good business model....

Well first of all, I'm not the one who waited until the last minute. What pops out at me (maybe because of your over-use of puctuation) from your post is your snide insinuation that Mexicans coming here for Semana Santa don't leave as much revenue. If that's what you think, you're very wrong. I agree that the Malecon still being torn up is a huge problem for the business owners in that part of town. During Spring Break the kids usually scatter around town, but at night they do tend to converge upon the Mirador, though.

You guys know that no matter how quiet I get...I just can't resist jumping in when you take the time to toss little pebbles against my window. Now who else thought Russ jumping in to defend me was sweet? All together now..."AWWW..."

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm with Joe, regarding the slow movement on the Malecon. It's almost as if they're trying to starve out the fish/shrimp vendors before they throw them off to another section of town. If you've got a last-minute hankering for some fresh shrimp and room in your ice chest while heading out of town with your friends/family, do you really think people are going to park way off the beaten path, get everyone out of the car, drag the ice chest over and start haggling over prices?

I don't even want to get into what it's done to the other businesses along the way...Ugh.

After everything was torn up, the electric lines were installed and the facades were measured off, paving that area should have been the #1 priority, even if it was just a temporary gravel-type road.

There are many of us who remember how slow all the construction was in PP before the boom, and compared to those day's this project is moving fast. I'm sure some of you can remember a statement like this,"Oh look! It only took them 2 months to get that last row of block up".

150 Pecos's a week would you work fast?
Not my point. As you well know a lot of the construction in those day's was slow because they would stop and start depending on how the $$ situation was, and what building material they could afford; not necessarily because they were slow workers.

Yeah, I hear you Kenny, I would joke about that as well, when folks were either building a home or a private business, etc. But this seems to be a govt.-funded project, the money was allocated in advance, correct? Anyway, with so much of the town's economy tied up in that one section, you'd think they'd have ramped up construction on the actual road itself, or at least allowed one lane of traffic through.

What on earth gives you the impression that anyone here works for 150 pesos a week?
Last time down I sat and talked to a worker down there and I asked what the wages were here compared to the states. He said not as good but he was making 350 pesos a day to be a laborer. He said considering his "Apartment" was 700 pesos a month he said he was doing really well being back in Mexico. And during this whole conversation I thought to myself WOW he speaks better english than the girl at the burger shoppe where I had lunch yesterday....

OK! who said that the Malecon was going to be finish for Spring Break anyway!! :whine: construction will continues until finished, unlike other project left half way done and abandon, we have to keep in mind that Spring Break is just one or two weeks a year, which generates a LOT of money, but we need to understand that RP government is not looking at a couple of weeks a year they are gearing up for the touristic future in a everyday basis. The days of making a 1/4 of a million dollars in one month and close for the rest of the year are over.
The fear the the US media has put in most US population regarding Mexico is coming to and end, I will give it another year at the most if that much, when the US government realized that they are being called the chicken sh%t of the world because they are scaring their own people, I have been talking to other countries passengers and that is the word outside the US and you know how PROUD some US citizens are specially in the government!! I wonder if that is why the bad mouthing of all of the good areas of Mexico has stopped, things that makes you go HMMMMMMM!!!!!
Lets face it people, cartels are killing each other for drug smuggling and power control, they are not messing with tourist of any country or color or in any town away from the border unless it is a town/city with a deep connection to the cartels/mafia, which Rocky Point is not!!! might have cartel connections but it is not the turf they are fighting for!!

I don't disagree. In fact I read in an article on yahoo that overall the Mexican tourist industry remains constant because of domestic tourism. However, why do businesses in RP prefer to take the American dollar over the peso. Obviously we all know the answer to that and thats simply my point. These are the same businesses that try to give you change in pesos when you purchase something with American currency. Regardless of how much money is spent with domestic tourism during Semana Santa you cant negate the fact that American money isn't going to be made this week during spring break. In business the only thing that matters is money and it was plain and simply a bad business decision to wait so close to Spring Break, PERIOD!
