A boat question

I know that when an outboard motor is cooling properly it will be shooting water out of the exhaust that you can see above the waterline. I also know that an Inboard direct drive will exhaust at the water line and will be spitting out hotwater. But on an outdrive, which I have never owned how do you know if the water is pumping properly? does it spray out like an outboard? Thanks in advance for your help :boat:

```1st boat should have a temp. gauge, or alarm like the one outboards have if you are low on oil it will go off, ```
on an outdrive it ( water ) is exiting out prop, so you can't see it, ```
``` Or, as we useto do on 1/4 miler v-drive, flat bottoms ( go fast boats )when we were running headers, or zoomies, which is pretty much all the time,``` find the water exhaust lines, usually rubber, where they connect to wet headers,one on each side,( v-8 ) put a "T" fitting & connect a rubber line to each "T" & run them to a nice chrome 2-tube 3/8 ID ( metal ) fixture that you mounted to transom, long enough to clear the transom, for example, if your transom width is say 12 inches, then cut tubes 14" put a 45 degree angle @ ends, ( for looks ) ```then @ any given time, just like an outboard, just look over your shoulder & you will see water shooting out of tubes, ```if you don't, then you know there is a problem,```if I had a outdrive, ``` this is the FIRST thing I would do to it, ```
this is very easy to do, ( this is pretty much the same thing that is done on OB'S, ``` where you see water shooting out side of motor )
``` but anyway, you should put fire, ( run ) to motor, BEFORE, you launch to make sure w/pump is working, I do before sailing, common sense dictates this, ```
Since most stern drive inboards are converted car engines, they use an automotive passive recirculation pump and thermostat. A temp gauge will tell you all you need to know about whether or not a stern drive engine is cooling properly.
If it is not cooling properly, then it gets tricky; because the problem can be:
1) the thermostat sticking
2) the passive low pressure water pump (the one attached to the engine)
3) the high pressure water source pump (the one that supplies the cool water to the passive system).
or
4) restriction or debris somewhere in the system.
I like Happy's idea for monitoring the high pressure system by running a small tube above the waterline.This would be a good indicator that the system is being supplied with cool water properly.
Careful what you say about most stern drives being converted car engines. There are major differences in stern drive blocks/heads/for cooling passages which WILL not match up to car engines. I know of several fellas who've attempted to r&r heads from a car engine to a boat block and ended up trashing everything. Can't be done. The parts may fit, but boat blocks/engines are designed for a much more severe operation than a car engine. Case in point... how many of us squeal the tires every time we leave a stop light/sign? Compare this to captains who jump on the throttle as quick as they can.
Starting motors are different, same with carbs, injection systems, fuel pumps, alternators, everything. Marine certified parts are more expensive because if you have a small fire/explosion on the water, you may not be able to exit the same way as if in a car... just walk away.
Guys will put on car parts because they're cheaper, but they're playing russian roulette.
Don't know about drag boats using car engines/parts. I suspect they run in shallow water, and have assistance nearby.
I know people that have failed spelling tests, but that does not prove that spelling is impossible. If you know what you are doing, then yes, it can be done properly.
None of these components are engine parts. They may be powertrain parts, but they are not part of the engine.
I went back and looked at my post, and I don't see where I stated that off the shelf parts from the neighborhood Autozone should be used on a boat. I do not condone that; but the statement that most major stern drives (Mercruiser, Volvo Penta, OMC) use engine designs originally applied to cars and trucks as their foundation is accurate. I never said that these designs weren't revised for application in boats...
If anyone interpreted what I wrote above as meaning that you can throw a rebuilt car engine in a boat and it will work, then that was not my intent.
DAMN! Now I have to rip apart what I just put together.
Thanks moore!!! LOL
