Renovation underway

If you have not been to town for awhile be prepared for some rough road in the Malecon. As I understand it all of the utility lines are being placed underground so there has been a lot of trenchwork done in the streets which is not yet repaved. There are some really attractive new street lamps in place right now that are part of the ongoing work. I also seem to recall hearing that the entire malecon shopping area will undergo renovation and a facelift similar to that which occurred on Shacks Fifth Ave or Rodeo Drive a few years back.

At the end of the Malecon near Vin Del Mar, in the parking area there is a lot of construction going on. Looks like a building going up. Anyone know what it might be? Hope it's not a new private restaurant. More public toilets would be useful in that location as there seems to be a local activity almost every weekend there with lots of people.

They need to take the wraps off of the new lamps or they will look like hell after the first storm hits and the acids bleed thru the wrapping trust me I have delt with that.. ugly ugly ugly....

I can't remember if it was Memorial Day or 4th of July but I went to old port to the little grocery store across from Licores Penasco to get Mexican bottled coke. I went south on that little street and turned left to go up to the other street to get back out of old port and discovered the road was gone. There was a guy on a bulldozer moving the sand around so I stopped and was getting ready to back up because there was no road, just a hole with big sand berms and concrete block on the side when he waved me forward. I popped her into 4 wheel drive and drove up on the concrete on one side and the sand on the other, navigating the 8 foot holes in the way. I went by him and he flashed a big thumbs up sign and yelled "JEEP!" LOL! I can now say that I have been 4 wheeling in old port! LOL! That would have never happened here!

I just got back from 9 days in PP and altho the renovation is far from being done, the roads are a bit smoother in old port. Still dirt but not nearly as many holes. The sidewalk overhangs are being done now and they have trenched the curbs in front of the shops and put boards to walk over while they lay the sidewalks. That's pretty much a mess now. Everything is changing and I don't like it..........I will look for my pictures of the malecon in the 1970's. You kids will NOT believe it!!!!!

There 'were' some block structures being built near Vin Del Mar, but they are GONE! Anyone happen to hear about it. I heard there was an ongoing conflict between the city and the owner of Vin Del Mar

pcMXPenascoBoats.jpgThe other picture in that post is 1946, and they have just put in the RR tracks down to the first pier at the point... This is what it looked like a few years later when shrimping was going full blast!
