I am having fishing withdrawals...

I mailed my passport in to be renewed (ordered a wallet card to go with it this time) and still waiting for it to come back, otherwise I'd be sitting on the Malecon drinking a beer right now instead of sitting at the computer typing this post...

I'm hoping my PassPort will get here before the weekend of the 17th so I can go fishing that weekend- I paid for all the expedited processing and overnight shipping.

I want to try some summertime trolling

Hows the weather for fishing today?
I haven't seen the water yet today, but I can hear the wind whistling through the palo verde tree in my back yard... don't think anyone will be going out today...

I'm just glad I got to swim yesterday while the water was still calm and clear... I swam from PDO boat ramp to Whale Hill and back... didn't time myself on this swim but I'm thinking it was close to an hour...

Mark...I've been out with the jetskis in worse....but I'm getting too old to take that kind of beating any more!!!

Ok, so I took my fishing withdrawals and turned it into positive fishing energy and did something creative over the 4th of July weekend...

I made a homemade Sabiki Rig out of an old bass reel spooled with 16 lb line, and 5 feet of 3/4 inch schedule 40 PVC:

The line feeds off the reel, through a single Fugi guide that I found in an old tackle box, and into a slot that I bored into the side of the tube.

At the other end, I ran a bead of epoxy around the exit to keep the line from wearing grooves into the PVC. 20 feet of nylon rope wrapped around the pipe for a grip (California style Bay-Bee!) and this rig was completed for under 10 bucks.

The 3/4 diameter tube is the perfect fit for a 4 ounce lead ball so now I can reel up the rig until all the flies are inside the tube, and the sinker sits snugly against the end and it can be stowed without those pesky sharp little flies drifting about in the wind, just looking for an eyeball to pierce...

The only downside is that the PVC is a little heavy, but hey, for 10 bucks (compared to 150 for a fiberglass sabiki rod) I can live with a little extra weight.

Cool! Way to build a better mousetrap! And good way to address the fishing "jones." I rebuilt a PennKG two-speed reel that a black seabass destroyed. All those little springs and gears and such, I felt like a watchmaker. At some point though, you'll probably get frustrated with it and chuck it over the side (kidding, but possible)!

Why you say? For me, sabiki rigs are a single use item. IF (big if) there's any hooks left on them (sierra love sabikis) and they're not tangled to the dickens when I'm done making bait, the hooks are bent and quickly rust anyway. I just cut them off (what's left of them) and chuck 'em in the trash at the end of the day and use a new one the next time I go out. No, I don't buy the $4-5 a pack sabikis. I bulk order them from Ebay, like 50 packs at a time. Net cost around $.75 a pack. At that price, I can afford to toss 'em.

I have the record for big fish on a sabiki. Fishing with Ric, I caught a pinto on one while making bait! Beat it, I dare ya! Hahahahaha!!

I'm more stubborn than that... I'll use them until the last fly has been snapped off, or completely rusted away. I think my longest lasting one made it through 3 trips before I broke down and tied a new one on...

Having the tube-pole handy means I can keep a bait rig tied up and at the ready for the whole day and those tiny little needle hooks are kept safely stashed away.

I used to make my own sabikis as well- bust out the fly tying vise and 8lb test and spend 6 hours making 10 droppers. Now I'm with Stuart- buying in bulk is the way to go...

That's a great idea to buy them in bulk, never thunk of that one. Lookout ebay! Kenny has done a great job picking up sinkers and I need to resupply.
