whats the best shore fish to eat

Would love to hear some opinions of what your favorite fish to catch and eat from the shore. All i have managed to catch is sand bass, leatherjack, trigger, and a few bullseye puffers. I actually cooked a leatherjack and it was pretty good. probably wasn't the greatest fish to eat but don't mind trying new things.

Triggerfish and Spotted Bay Bass (if you can get one large enough to fillet) both taste very good.

Flounder (if you can get one big enough to fillet) is also very tasty- If I had to pick a "favorite" shore fish to eat it would be flounder

Corvina and Corbina are both quite good as well.

Don't eat those puffers... the liver is deadly poisonous, and if you even touch it while cleaning the fish you can contaminate the rest of the fish.

my last early morning tide outing i hooked up a spotted bay bass that was damn near 3lbs. it was a beast it went right into the rocks on me and i had to wade out and far to my right. i couldn't believe how big he was when i got him out of the rocks and the water. He would've been good eats i bet.

any tips or tricks on catching the flounder? ive only seen one person reel one in and they had netted baitfish in the estuary and brought it back to the beach to fish with.

Moore_RB i saw a few pics of your mako boat, she's a beaut so jealous looks like you could do some damage out on that boat. thx for the input buddy

yup, the best success I've had with the flounder is on fresh caught silversides (live or dead doesn't matter) on a 1/2 ounce jighead slowly drug across the bottom.

bare jig heads, bucktail jigs or curlytail grubs (same 1/2 ounce size) tipped with a piece of cut bait have also worked for me.

I have found that Leatherjack makes good cut bait- the skin is reflective, and tough so it stays on the hook, and it is really oily and fishy smelling.

I used to have a routine when I would fish the estuaries- I would throw a Kastmaster or other spoon when I first got there. If there were no Corvina and all I was catching were Leatherjacks, then I'd carve one up into strips and start fishing the bottom with the jigs and bait strips while watching for surface activity.

With two poles (one tied with a spoon, the other tied with a jig) you can fish the bottom to pass the time, and still be prepared for when a school of Corvina come crashing in on the surface

Thanks- yeah, since I've got a boat now, I don't spend much time around the estuaries anymore... but I sure do burn a lot more gas per fish :)

A ton of years ago my Dad used to catch Sea Trout. Took some home to a neighbor who had stomach cancer and it turned out it was one of the few things she could eat. I don't eat fish (always find too many bones no matter who deboned it!) so couldn't swear to it's taste - but my Dad liked it.

Corvina are excellent.
Agree the leatherjack are good - first ocean fish I ever caught. Never caught flounder.

I'm goingto bring a seine for baitfish next time. I know the kids would love netting them. Are silversides identifiable? Just look for silvery little fish?

thanks for the input guys. Im after flounder and larger sand bass for a nice beach grilled dinner while im down there feb 18!!! i also have no problem reeling in anything else that decides to take a lure or bait from me : )

When I was there last summer, fishing off the beach I seen a florescent yellowish greenish fish chasing smaller fish. What you think it was?

azfish - i was down about 10 years ago with a friend who was fishing caught something like you mentioned but had a 3rd color on it. was an awesome and good sized fish. not sure what it was though haven't seen one since

If it was a turquoise green with flashes of silver, then I would bet that it was a sierra.

They can be caught all summer just off the rocks between Sandy Beach and Pelican Point, and sometimes they can be seen boiling up baitfish in the mouths of the estuaries... and they are also delicious on the grill.

Goden phase Leopard Grouper...?

This would be an extremely rare one to see from shore, however...

Years ago I hooked a young Billfish of some kind. I was in a Panga that some Mexican National guy's who were on vacation used to troll for Mackerel and a type of Bonita in the bay. It was very popular 25+ years ago to troll and hand line for them. The bay would be buzzing with local boats, and the bay full of fish. We had also dropped a net close to the mouth of the harbor before going out. Anyway I'd given these guy's some money for gas etc, and went out with them to do the local thing. After we'd caught a ton of these little guy's I asked them if we could fish on the bottom close to high tide by the rock bluffs north of sandy. I'd brought some medium gear, and they were up to trying those rod and reel's themselves. We used the fish we'd caught as cut bait and were having fun catching the usual stuff when this bright 3 1/2 to 4 to foot speedster stared circling the boat and scarin up bait fish. It was not a needle fish, or a Dorado, it was a young Billfish, but even the local boy's didn't know what kind. I had a rod(7 foot, Med action)and reel that I'd used for Steelhead up in the Pacific Northwest spooled with 15lb mono with me, and I quickly put on a nice big White feathered Jig and waited for him to cruise by again. When he did I tossed it out in front of him and he grabbed it on the run. As soon as he felt the hook he made a half circle, making everyone in the boat duck as he headed out to sea. I never turned him, not even close. That was the fastest fish I've I'd had on my line, before or since. I mean he stripped off line faster than I could ever imagine, and he never dove, he was always close to the surface and just hauling it! When I finally decided to try and slow him down by cupping my hand, and putting pressure under the spinning reel's face it was just a exercise in futility. It was like being hooked up to a little torpedo, and a fast one. He broke me off with no big fan fair, it just broke. I'll never forget it though, it was like being hooked up to a underwater rocket ship!
