Weekend Observations/Rumors

I was actually only down for a little over 24 hours, but here's what I have to report. Ridiculously windy yesterday morning. Hate.the.wind. Heard something Saturday night about Boomerfest from someone who works in the Health Dept. that supposedly has spoken to the organizers of the event, so take this for what it's worth. The organizers mentioned to this person that they were trying to secure Aerosmith and Metallica. The cost for Aerosmith to appear in the US in a normal venue is no less the $500,000. The cost for Metallica is $650,000. How do I know this? Because the General Manager of US Airways Center in Phoenix is my friend and he knows the price of all acts, bands, artists. So, with just those 2 bands you're talking over a million dollars and that's for a normal arena show. Transfer that across the border with permits, travel, etc. The organizers won't even be able to pay for one of these bands. This event is not going to happen and if it does, it'll be bands that were one hit wonders. I just wish it would go away. The military stop at the Caborca/El Golfo turn-off is gone. Not sure why. We got into town around 3:45 on Saturday and nothing. Left yesterday at 4:30 and nothing. No sign that they were ever even there. Border wait - nightmare. We left at 4:30 yesterday and had a 90 minute wait at the border. 4 out of 5 lanes open. Never leaving on a Sunday again - it was like 2005 all over again. Not sure why, but it's not letting me put returns in between my paragraphs, so sorry for the one giant paragraph.

The Boomerfest report makes me wonder even more just what they are up to. Some sort of scam??

I went up Sunday the 9th of June and had a long wait to cross at 3:00 and hot, hot, hot ! All lanes were open into the US and the usual group of inbound inspectors on the US side was not in presence at all and all lanes were outbound from Mex. Hard to understand why it is so slow with all lanes open. When way back with 2 lanes seemed to move at a snail's pace. At the inspection point things went quickly. The outbound lane into Mexico was back in action when I returned so they did not go away.

That's crazy because I left Sunday the 9th of Roger Clyne weekend at 4pm from Rocky Point and only waited 30 minutes at the border which IMHO isn't bad. Anything under 45 minutes and you should consider yourself fortunate. Compared to the 3+ hour waits of the hey-day.

When we first pulled up to the line to cross my Border Watch app said 40 minute wait with 4 out of 5 lanes open. I checked 15 minutes later and it was updated to 50 minute wait with 4 out of 5 lanes open. In reality, it was 90 minutes. For what it's worth, every single secondary inspection lane was filled with cars/trucks. They were taking a lot of time with each car. I honestly think they're trying to discourage us from going to Mexico.

mis2810, I am going to assume you know Ralph Marchetta. Regardless, the information you present is correct. I have been saying this for almost a year but those who still want to believe continue to hold out hope for something to materialize. The artist guarantee you are referring to would be correct for a show sold to an established promoter such as Live Nation or AEG and is for a routed date, not a festival. Ask your friend how things really work in this day and age where most artists receive 110% of the gate. We are less than 3 months from the newly scheduled dates of BoomerFest Days and yet there is no artist announcement. It may have been started with great intentions but after 9 months of this nonsense it has proven to be nothing more than a pipe dream.

Pinky, yes, Ralph and I have been friends and have worked together for 17 years. You and I may even know each other and not realize it! He was in Penasco with us over the weekend.

Could be a scam. I just hope all the condo HOA's figure it out soon because they all have that week blocked off.

Bit paranoid dont you think? Now you're getting into conspiracy theory rhetoric. They're making you wait 90 minutes at the border to discourage you from coming back???? SMH, I dont know anything but I was in Rocky Point twice in 10 days this month and nothing to me says paranoia or conspiracy to discourage my travels to Mexico. I also visit RP once a month for about the last 7 years and have been coming down for 16 years now total so I guess I would consider myself to be somewhat credible and thinking that a 90 minute wait is a conspiracy to discourage your travel to RP is paranoia! Maybe, and this is just an opinion but dont take as many hits off of the pipe before you leave to the border. The paranoia comes on strong when you reach customs. I only take one rip now before I leave so Im not as high when I reach the border.

Exaggerate much? You're the one that needs to put down the pipe. It's far from a conspiracy theory. Lots of us have assumed around here that the US in general wants our dollars in the US not in Mexico. Also, I never said I wasn't going back. I said I would stay an extra day to avoid the border wait. You're not the last word on the comings and goings of PP regardless of hlow many times you go in a mo th foe the last 75 years, even though you think you are,and neither am I. Calmate guey!

More likely it is a work slow down because they are understaffed or soon will be. I have read the workers plan to put pressure on congress to end the sequester by making things tough on us.

yes, that border wait was ridiculous. About 5 ears ago, they created 2 new lanes, increasing the amount by 66% from 3 to 5. Now they cut off one of those lanes for people exiting the US. They really need at least 5 lanes open at all times on Sundays.

First, I will never put down the pipe. Secondly, it might not be a conspiracy but it is a THEORY. Furthermore, I've agreed to the point made about keeping US $ in America when the State Department was putting out the travel warnings right before Spring Break 2 or 3 years in a row. In addition, when did I ever say that you said that you weren't going back? Please tell me. Clearly I understand that Im not the last word on the comings and goings of RP, whatever that means. I was only stating my experience to provide credibility to other readers. Lastly, why is it that every time I quote something from you, you take it personally? Im pretty sure you're the one that needs to CALM DOWN MAN! Clearly you're reaching pretty far with your ASSUMPTIONS regarding border wait times. How do you even reach that correlation MAN?

Jerry, isn't the Senate proposing in the new Immigration Bill to add an additional 20,000 Border Patrol Agents to make a total of 40,000?? That's the word on the streets...

Unreal numbers...it is gonna be hard being a busboy trying to get back to Chicago from Xmas break at home in Chiapas.I see very few at my ranch anymore but most seem to be central americans. The Sequester effects are just now hitting home...it will be a mess

The number of BP vehicles, both parked and on the road all the way up to New Mexico is absolutely astounding to me. I read that, at this juncture at least, the new immigration bill included mucho increase in border security 20,000 agents and many more miles of the stupid fence. The sequester is a cut in budget spending and in reality probably has had very little immediate effect anywhere. Most of the cuts will affect the future but not today. Yes the bureaucracy will take advantage of the situation to try to increase influence and budget dollars. How could they possible admit they could be doing the job for LESS?? Most of the stuff published is based on some bean counter's guess about the effects, not on reality.
