Turtle Time

This is the time of year when we saw the sea turtle eggs hatch. For those of you lucky enough to be on the beach over the next week or so be on the lookout for baby turtles making their way down to the water. It would be a good idea to call CEDO so they can supervise. Whatever you do, don't tell anybody else or you will have everyone for miles around getting in the way. :)

More than anything you have to be extremely lucky to see it happen. Unfortunately there are not a lot of turtles laying eggs on the RP beaches so you would have to be at the right place at the right time. The eggs are buried just above the high tide line and there is usually just a depression left. We saw it and planned to fill it in because we thought some kids had dug a hole in the sand. Fortunately we never got around to it and about Thanksgiving the turtles hatched. The video above isn't ours but it could have been & looks like the east beaches.

You would think we could discuss cool stuff about RP and nature in general and educate people about what to do and not to do. But maybe you're right, don't ever tell anybody anything. Not sure how there can ever be a change for the good that way. Thank God I didn't try to discuss the terrible spot the Vaquita is in.

What if you find a Turtle shell on the beach and take back to your house in Mex. is that against the law as well?

We had a mother turtle lay 82 eggs on our beach in Penasco. A professor came to take the eggs and incubate them, and return them when they hatch. I hope we're down there when it happens. Unfortunately, I don't know the name of the professor.

I actually wondered about this myself.
We ran across a deceased tortuga on the beach, well acutally big doggie found it as it was something stinky to roll around in! Anyway, about an hour later saw some people putting it in a garbage bag and in the back of their truck. When I inquired about it they told me they were going to bury it for a while then put it on their patio.

I've read it numerous times and continue to enjoy it. It really captures the magic of such a special event. This is the kind of stuff that has kept me coming back to Rocky Point for all the years. Thanks for writing it!
