Think small

I have a few friends that have built using containers. I think they spent about 1.5 times the amount it would have cost to just build conventionally. I personally think the containers are cool but there is a ton of retro fitting required to make them habitable.

Ska Brewery in Durango, CO has recently added on a restaurant using two industrial shipping containers. It looks really nice. In fact, the restaurant is called "The Container." http://www.durangoherald.com/article/20130908/NEWS04/130909647/-1/News04/A-building-block-expansion-

smallhouse.jpg finished the bath and shower trailer for our little brokster guests compound...stripped out Airstream turned to open plan bedroom/living room cost 1500...deck with 12' by 10' shed kitchen/futon equipped room on deck cost maybe 2k....really nice inside shower/sink and toilet on 5 bye 8 trailer cost 1k. The trailer hook into existing septic but having bath on trailer solves zoning trouble. A friend doing a container said he would never do it again.
