Last evening on the Malecon was delightful. A warm breeze flowed in across the sea carrying that pungent odor of fish, sea and decay from a warm spring night. Families were strolling or sitting on the new benches, some laughing and talking. Some sat sillently watching the passersby. A few sipped from a large bottle contained in a paper bag. Children darted around chasing each other and laughing, mothers crying cautions.
I sat nearby a small band, bass, accordian, trumpet and guitar, while 3 Viejas danced to the rhythem, hooting and shouting, Ayiiii Ayyiiii , ample bosoms and bottoms shaking. I could smell the flowing cervesa as one of the viejas ran her hands through the according player's hair and tried to bump and grind with the accordian in the way.
The Penasco skateboarding club was out in force down on the open plaza. The signature clacking of skateboards reverbrated off the massive columns. The boarders had brought along a small platform with steel edges and set it in the center of the plaza. They circled around, bee like, and approached one at a time to attempt some manuver or another. The direct jump over and land on the skateboard still moving smoothly on the other side. The hop to the side and slide along the steel edge creating a small shower of sparks. The hop up and roll down the platform and smoothly off the other side, maybe grabbing a little air in the middle. Then of course there was, with some frequency, the crashing clatter of a board gone wild and the rider scrambling to catch up.
When you visit next, try a quiet evening stroll through the newly renovated Malecon. I think they did a good job on the renovation, although I was a skeptic. Lots of places to relax, room to stroll. The families of Penasco are sure enjoying it so take the opportunity to mix and mingle.
