Satellite Internet Access

We have had Wildblue satellite internet access since 2006 and upgraded to their Exede platform this weekend out at the Estero. Holy smokes is this new system fast! Average of 20 megs down and 3 megs up! It is an exponential improvement over the old system. We run the whole system on solar 24/7.
Highly recommended if you need Internet at the beach and you are not located in town.

What's the monthly cost of Wildblue or Exede?

We're currently using TelMex. Basic plan (only 3 mbps down) with phone for $30 dlls per month. It meets our needs, but always looking for good alternatives.

People at Santo Tomas have installed a new internet dish system called something like NET 30. It works great and costs 35 a month and you can pay a 10$ a month fee when not using it.I will send you the installer info when I find it.

Who did you use to purchase and install it? I may have to look into it because the Encanto service I had been using made some changes to their AP equipment in mid-January and now I have a bad signal they can't figure out why, so no internet connection ever since for me.

I installed the original Wildblue service myself and it was extremely difficult to get the dish aligned correctly. This time around I got the Exede system from Channel Choice in Tempe, but they also have an office in Tucson. Their installer John was very cool and drove to Penasco from Tucson. If you want his info let me know. The Exede service is really awesome and they have a vacation plan so over the summer we can put the service on hold. The data cap for the plan we are on is 25 gigs of download per month and 10 bucks for every gig over the 25. From midnight to 5:00 a.m there are no data caps.

The latency has also been dramatically improved to about 645 milliseconds. Voip will work fine, Exede even offers a voice service to go with the Internet access.
Vonage, Ooma, Magic Jack, Skype or hostedvoip.com will work fine.

Anyone have a feel for what kind of usage 25 gigs of download per month gives you? I don't have a clue.

Mondone,

Our satellite provides service for our club (about 40 houses) via a mesh wifi network and we had an 18 gig limit with the old Wildblue system. We only once ever exceeded the 18 gig limit and that was over a Spring Break week last year. If you were going to use the satellite for your own usage you should not have any concerns about data caps unless you are streaming movies everyday or using Pandora or a Slingbox quite a bit. Streaming Internet can use up data pretty fast. The Exede data plans are on a rolling 30 day period.
