Puerto Lobos to Puerto Libertad

I have ridden ATV's many times from Penasco to El Golfo and also from Desemboque to Lobos. I want to make the trek from Lobos to Libertad now. Have any of you made this ride? Care to impart some of your wisdom?

My first recommendation would be to take a really good look at it in Google Earth.

There is a huge Mountain range (Sierra Julios), that come right down to the shore, halfway between Lobos and Libertad- It is not all beach.

These mountains easily rise to 3500 feet, and do not look easily passable by any motorized vehicle. The shoreline is composed of steep cliffs and jagged rocks for what I estimate was about 5 miles (think Whale Hill or Competition Hill coastlines on steroids)

^^^^ What he said. While you can run the beach for a ways south of Lobos, the beach disappears well before Libertad.

I have been looking on GE, I hope to find an inland road to pass the mountains. Not sure if the trip is worth it with the cartel action down that way.

the beach goes south for a ways. You would have to do it at extremely low tide or a new - full moon. you do have to take a road up and around the mountain. If you dont take a local or someone who has done it ,take a bunch of beers and water as it gets hotter than **** going thru the desert. I gave up when I was down to 3 beers and turned around. The ride south is ever changing as the cliffs give way all the time and can block the beach all the way to the water ,until it gets washed away. Enjoy the ride down and bring fishing gear as you never know when the water will light up with fish. LeighPs take another quad . if you brake down you would be screwed

Oh yeah,be prepared to see some federaleys (sp) or marines. You'll be riding and all of a sudden out of no where they pop out of a hill side and scare the **** out of you as they are all pointing there guns at you and want to know what you are doing down the beach. Are you going to pick up a load of mota or what.Like you could carry it on the quad. If you do come up on a covered pile of somethimg don't look at it ,but get the F--- out of there or you might start hearing gun fire.

Leigh....is some of the landscape down to Libertad like what you see south down the coast from your place....like a dozer came through and sliced them vertically?

mostly dirt cliffs that give way all the time .Just dont park under a cliff.good ride down beach, you just never know how far you are going to be able to go, due to rock slides and cliffs falling. Leigh

Thanks so much. I have ridden pretty far south of Lobos and have huge desire for the adventure that awaits beyond. I have ridden from Ensenada to LaPaz also. I think I will do what Vaquita Wrangler did and explore further south first. I was in Lobos once when one of the dirt cliffs gave way and buried a mexican kid. He was dead before they could dig him out. Sad.

Have any of you been to Libertad? If so what is it like?

On the beach oriented trips , 4-wheels. Two years ago I pre-ran the Baja 1000 with a bunch of guys on dirt bikes. We had two chase trucks to supply us with gas, food and water. It was an incredible trip and I loved all of the little Mexican villages we went through and stayed in.
